Excess ain’t rebellion

You’re drinking what they’re selling

Your self destruction doesn’t hurt them

Your chaos won’t convert them

  1. Hot-Spotting: It’s How, Not How Much

Let’s take a health care example. Imagine if you could identify a small number of patients who end up eating up most health care dollars. Let’s say you could focus resources just on them, improve their health outcomes, while also cutting the overall amount of health care spending dramatically. This wouldn’t be a question of how much, but how. This isn’t fiction, it comes from Camden, New Jersey, one of the poorest cities in the country. And the technique is known as hot-spotting, or targeting resources to needs.

Of course this makes heavy use of a number of practices in the business world so some here will poo-poo it for that reason. But this could significantly reduce the cost of providing government services.

    1. Actually, it makes use of something called “social work,” probably the most unappreciated of jobs and typically underfunded by business-friendly governments.

Funny how business types so often believe they’ve invented a new solution when they’ve come up with a new name for an old solution.

  2. Q: I need birth control. Where can I go for birth control?

“I didn’t find any birth control clinics.” [This was repeated every time I asked about birth control, all three times. This is also the answer given when I asked, “What is birth control?”]

    Q: What is an abortion?

Q: Where can I go to get an abortion?

    Q: What is an abortion?

“Sorry, I couldn’t find any abortion clinics.”

Q: Where can I find a crisis pregnancy center?

“Ok, here’s a place matching “Crisis Pregnancy Center;” it’s not far from you:”

    ———————————

    1. I am pregnant and do not want to be. Where can I go to get an abortion?

Answer: “This abortion clinic is a little ways from you:

Associated Pregnancy and Abortion Information Services (with a map to the location in Milwaukee)

Note: Here’s the kicker. I live less than 10 miles from an abortion clinic in Madison, Wisconsin. There are also 2 abortion clinics in Milwaukee. However, Associated Pregnancy is not an abortion clinic but a CPC. Grrrr!

Just tested out a ton of questions about abortion and received the same results. The kicker is you can find more than Viagra- escort services, search for a “prostitute” and even ask to find a blow job and get a ton of hits.

    1. it’s not a 100% surprise because Steve Jobs was a prude. I saw some published back and forth emails he had, I think on SLOG, and he actually said something about not wanting people to be able to use his devices for porn. I mean, good luck with that…

Hopefully they can roll that back now that he’s gone.

  3. Senate Knocks Down Detainee Amendment

WASHINGTON – The Senate voted to defeat an important amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act. The amendment, offered by Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.), would have deleted harmful provisions authorizing the U.S. military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians, including American citizens, anywhere in the world. The amendment would have replaced those provisions with a requirement for an orderly congressional review of detention power.

    1. Do you think that the current crop of Republican presidential candidates has anything to do with this?

All of them have rushed to embrace the TP platform. And the real TP darlings (Bachman, Perry, Cain) are an embarrassment. So I wonder if the high profile they’ve gotten, with all the debates and press coverage, has led to the decline of the TP’s stature.

Or is it the fact that they’d all fail Kindergarten 101 (doesn’t play well with others)?
