We've been praying for God to show us a sign…
I couldn't give a flying fig what some mythical skyman wants me to do. The science says wear a mask. Unless one is on the side of the virus.
Which SkyDaddy, indeed. Maybe the MAGAts will pick one by 2024. He’ll be the one on their side.
Who didn’t see this coming?
Today (Saturday) is Start a Rumor Day
Can Bannon produce his podcast from prison?
Asking for a friend.
Sans competence or the ability to sting? Poor PewPew, maybe she can run as GEDbert and get instructions for the secret handshake and keys to the treehouse.
Cursed by the [liberal] alphabet! . . .
. . . Too bad, really. Getting in there could have been Qbie’s single biggest legislative accomplishment.
Maybe she can start calling herself, Glockbert??
Well done, sir.

So it turns out the challenges of our labor force, like our supply chain, can’t be reduced to enough syllables to be a rally cry on a MAGA bumper sticker (not that they won’t make something up).

I think I was slightly ahead of the curve on this one. I left the workforce at age 67..about 3 years ago…before Covid 19 shook up everything. I have been doing fine with saved money, but it won't last forever. I will have to go back to singing for a living ere long…
…or do they still need greeters at WallyWorld?
Maybe you should investigate the possibilities of a franchise from Foxes and Fossils ???
"Cuties and Codgers"? "Hot and Huh? " There's gotta be some money to be made with your musical experience.
That's a cute premise.
I have done well enough from time to time as a solo act. Covid came and gigs disappeared, but I think I am ready to rejoin society. I had been playing with a vocal trio in Grand Junction and at a couple of local spots by myself.
I have gotten more and more comfortable as a solo performer. Bands are tough.. I have been in several. The biggest difficulty is in finding people who can connect with the songs I have written. It is amazing how many musicians don't listen very well.
But, I haven't written off performing with a group. Chemistry happens!
That goes to show how Socialist Security has made old people lazy and destroyed the free-exchange of Labor and Capital. Without the lash of hunger, why would old people keep working. Republicans warned us about this back in the 1930s.
Let's get rid of Socialist Security and solve the labor supply problem!
And repeal that damned 13th amendment. The real constitution has just one amendment, the second.
…and while you are at it….the DHR…c'mon.
'zactly. That money should be in 401ks, where it can be more effectively skimmed.
The bright spot in the labor shortage is the young people who will graduate from university in a few months. If people already working are moving for a clean cup (more money), it may open up some of the entry-level jobs that had been scarce the last few years.
Spent yesterday working a debate tournament with a staff person who will be leaving the organization for a "real" job making real money. Fresh out of a Masters program, taking a job that opened up in no small part because vaccinated people can do business face to face.
Some people are more essential in labor than others, at least according to Mississippi racist farmers.
I was appalled by the situation described in this NYT article, “Black Farmworkers Say They Lost Jobs to Foreigners Who Were Paid More”.
Black farmhands have been working the rich Mississippi delta soil for centuries, starting with slave labor. Since emancipation, they’ve continued working, for not much money ( around $8/ hr).
A few years ago, H-2A visa programs enabled farmers to import labor. They didn’t want Spanish speakers because they didn’t speak Spanish. They didn’t want black farmhands, even though they knew the procedures and machines, because …..Mississippi racism .
So they imported hundreds of white South Africans and paid them more money to do the same work….and laid the black farmhands off. So much for “America First”
Appalling. Waiting for PP to get on here and explain how it’s all the fault of socialist Democrats.
Wow. The potato processing-packing facility in Wray has displaced a number of Latina workers with South Africans.
Probably paying them more than the Latinas they replaced. A lawsuit waiting to happen. I’ll pass that along to a friend who works with migrants in ag.
Gee, wonder if the importation of South Africans has anything to do with the fact that they come from a cultural legacy of Apartheid and therefore fit right in here in the States?
They speak English, and are supposedly “good workers”…but yes, I think that legacy fits right in here.
My wife (age 64) could work part time (1000 hours/year) or take home the same amount of money from Social Security.
You do the math.
Dave, when this blog was founded, they promised there would be no math.
That rule was specifically agreed to so Fluffy and Pfruit could participate in our Arabic numerals ruse.
However, working in lieu of early retirement not only provides the equivalent income, it automatically contributes 8% to her savings (future earnings). Unless she is from a family with a history of early death, waiting as long as possible to take Social Security is almost always the better strategy.
I agree…other circumstances influenced my decision to pull the trigger at 67. I just didn't want to continue working in the building business until age 70. If/when I return to the work force, it will be in some other line of work. If one can, it is good to wait. 8% is nothing to sneeze at.
Not necessarily as she will inherit my larger benefit when I croak. I am 9 years older.
The rule of thumb is that you have to live past 85 in order to benefit from waiting until Ss at age 70. When she is 85, I will most likely be dead.
How are we going to know when you’re dead, Barnes?
Asking for a friend (and you know we love you. Kind of. Sort of. A little bit. Maybe.)
Nothing says you can't take Social Security AND continue working. Even if you hit income limits, it's not a negative, as the extra goes into your SS account.
The good news is we may be disinfecting Ttumpy’s tax returns just in time for 2024.
You could blast Trump's tax returns on every news channel and social media site for weeks, and it would only increase his popularity. The guy is a magnet for all those who WISH they could cheat and get away with it. That's been the GOP Dream since Nixon got caught.
November 14, 1851 – Moby-Dick, a novel by Herman Melville, is published in the USA
Huh … I never noticed the title DOES have a hyphen and many mentions in the text do not.
And, a late find in the news:
Of course they did…
