So as I understand it the point of August recess is for Congressmen and Senators to go back home and hear from voters, stay in touch with issues, etc.
There’s a story that I found pretty jaw-dropping in today’s Denver Post. Apparently Rep. Diana Degette has done 1 public event for all of August. And it wasn’t even a live town hall or something like that. It was an hour-long tele-town hall.
Really? That’s all she had time for? That’s compared to other reps and senators in the state who had numerous town halls, etc. I found the excuse that people don’t show up in Denver pretty lame, honestly. I know people do. And it’s a good opportunity to hear from people who you might not agree with but who are part of your district.
Anyway, it’s a pretty disappointing performance by Degette. What else was she doing all month?

Because she can.
She can be the 1st District rep for as long as she wants.
Yeah it sucks that congresspeople in safe districts don’t feel the need to hold public forums, but don’t pretend like she’s the only one.
If we actually redistricted CD1 to be competitive, then she (or someone else) would have to appear — same with CD5.
And – unlike Degette (who I’ve voted for…and voted for…and voted for…), I’d also like to see him lose.
But it’s kind of lame for her not to be reaching out to people pro-actively, right? And if she’s that comfortable, maybe someone should challenge her?
Anyone want to call her office and ask what her schedule is like?
I must admit, the times I have been in Congresswoman DeGette’s office, I have been greeted by her receptionist or other staff members. They are always cordial, interested, thankful (that people came in), and eager to hear what we had to say. They don’t turn down photo requests, either.
Contrast that with Mike Coffman’s office. I have had friends who were told to their face that he would not meet with them because their issue was a Democratic issue. One of my friends, a Board Member with HRC, said when he tried to meet with Coffman, they just laughed. Even Lamborn sat down and met with them. Apparently, GLBTQ rights are just a big joke to Mr. Coffman.
Coffman’s office staff is consistently rude, unprofessional and arrogant. At least one was dishonest. When we had a health care reform rally outside his office in 2009, we organized a crowd of 1400 people to show up on the pro-health care side. There were a few hundred tea party people there, as well. The bold-faced liar staffer in Coffman’s office told a television camera the crowd was “about even — half for, half against”.
Another friend called Coffman’s office and was told, “Mike represents the people who voted for him.” In other words, the Republicans, not the half of my county, Arapahoe, that is Democratic. Funny, I thought members of Congress were obligated to represent ALL of their constituents?
In fairness, when I called several times regarding the debt ceiling a few weeks ago, there was a woman there who was polite and answered the phone promptly. I almost fell off my chair. I thought I had a wrong number.
Mike Coffman is a disgrace as a Congressman. It is his job to represent all of his constituents, and he flaunts that he is only interested in representing half of them. If Diana DeGette’s 1400 person phone call, or meetings with individuals who drop by her office are not enough, please try meeting with Mike Coffman. He is the little man behind the curtain in Wizard of Oz, and when you try to expose him, he runs hiding.
(I know, I know. Tell us how you really feel, right?) Joe Miklosi cannot win back CD6 for the people soon enough.
I would give my eye-teeth to live in Diana DeGette’s or Ed Perlmutter’s district. If you do, count your blessings.
shouldn’t give her a free pass.
How about some results in Congress ? Should we let the institution continue to fail and problems go unsolved because we like the individual ?
Activist Gene Lucero is already rounding up funds and endorsements to primary DeGette.
