Things That Make You Go...WTF Are You Talking About?

  • by: Colorado Pols

Republican Rep. Doc Hastings, Chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, has made no secret of his beliefs on environmental issues. In a nutshell, the Washington state Republican advocates drilling more, mining more, and cutting more.

Hasings believes what he believes, whether or not what he says makes any sense whatsoever. Hastings sat down recently for a video interview with Politico, which the online news outlet summed up thusly:

Rep. Doc Hastings (R-Wash.) tells POLITICO it’s too soon to enact safety-reform legislation in response to last year’s Gulf of Mexico spill – but not too soon to push for an expansion of offshore drilling. “Drilling is safe, otherwise, they wouldn’t have issued the permits down there.”

WTF?

Once again, folks: Hastings says that it’s too soon to enact safety-reform legislation, but not too soon to push for an expansion of offshore drilling. We could write a bunch of words about how ridiculous Hastings sounds. We could write that this is kind of like saying after 9/11 that it’s too early to enact new safety measures for airplanes but that we need to just get them up in the air as soon as possible.

We could write a lot of things in response, but instead, here’s a picture from FreshnessMag.com taken two months after last summer’s Gulf Oil Spill:

    1. Rep. Doc Hastings (R-Wash.) tells POLITICO it’s too soon to enact safety-reform legislation in response to last year’s sinking of the Titanic – but not too soon to push for an expansion of shipping. “Shipping is safe, otherwise, they wouldn’t have issued the permits down there.”

Rep. Hasting later said it wasn’t proven that a shortage of lifeboats was the cause of the tragedy.
