Jon Caldara: Tell Us How You Really Feel

  • by: jaytee

(Clearly, the school board was just a formality! – promoted by Colorado Pols)

Head of the “nonpartisan” “libertarian” Independence Institute, Jon Caldara let his excitement run away with him today. He was  celebrating the Douglas County school board decision Tuesday night to give residents tax money to pay for private schools.

His first-blush email dispatch congratulates the work of two Independence Institute employees in convincing the board to “adopt several pretty radical school choice reforms” that “enhance the ability of DougCo families to make the right choice in education for their children.”

Oops. Then came a correction email. He apologizes for the fact that his  dyslexia led him to congratulate his staffers instead of the school board for making the wonderful school choice decision. Nor did he mean to imply that sending your kids to a private school was the “right decision.” It’s just expanded school choice that the Institute and Caldara support!

Dispatch No. 1:

I had to share this great news with you coming out of Douglas County. Thanks to our education stars from the Ed Policy Center Pam Benigno and Ben DeGrow, the DougCo school district decided to adopt several pretty radical school choice reforms last night! These reforms enhance the ability of DougCo families to make the right choice in education for their children. We are extremely proud of our Education Policy Center for all the hard work they did to help make this happen.

No. 2:

Hey everyone,

Sorry for emailing all of you twice in one day, but I’ve got to make a correction to the email I sent earlier. It appears my dyslexia got the best of me on this one. What I meant to say regarding the Douglas County school choice victory was that our Education Policy Center would like to congratulate the DougCo School Board for their decision to extend more school choice options for their parents and students. We are extremely proud of them for making such a monumental, pro-school choice decision.

If I read this right, and I think I do, and EdNews is getting it right, and I think she is, then here’s what happens.

Douglas County School District (DCSD), like all 183 Colorado school districts, get’s their piece of per pupil funding from the state legislature.

Then, for up to 500 kids starting next year, they give 75% of the state contribution to the kid’s family to send that kid to the madrassa private school of choice.

Douglas County tax payers have no more skin in this game than any tax payer in Colorado, and yet they get to elect their own school board.

    1. if i were lucky enuff to have a Mom like Beej & I lived in DougCo could Mommie not only celebrate Hick’s cuts to Ed funding throwing hard working teachers on the street but also cash in that voucher paying herself 4 my skoolin?  WooHoo!

      1. Not sure what II’s tax status is, I would say probably.

c3s have to limit their lobbying activity, if they file an election to about 20% of expenditures.

c3s cannot engage in electioneering (supporting or opposing, or appearing to support or oppose a candidate).  c3s can support or oppose ballot initiatives (because the electorate is acting as a legislative body in that case, but lobbying limits apply).  Oh, and I am not a lawyer, please seek competent counsel if needed and all that.

  2. not just Republican upper middle-class kids from Douglas county.  Certainly, the State does not want to be seen as being deferential to only one priviledged segment of society.

    1. that it’s kind of offensive to confuse foot-in-mouth syndrome/I-can’t-read-my-own-shit-before-pressing-send disease with an actual disorder.

How about we give it a proper name? To coin a phrase, he pulled a Caldara.

  3. The guy’s panicking because in a moment of weakness he was actually speaking honestly for a change.

That just wouldn’t do for the Independence Institute. Next you’ll have Tom Tancredo admitting he hates Mexicans.

  4. Jon Caldara and Amy Oliver attempt to take credit for every political victory while they conveniently forget their overwhelming political failures.

  5. I.I. falls victim to the same perils that plague all government. They have no profit motive, customer feedback, price mechanism or other market correction features.

Essentially Jon Caldara operates in a vacuum or an ivory tower if you prefer. Amy Oliver only serves to amplify this situation.

I must clarify, not every member of II is pompous. It is about a 50/50 split. Many there are humble servants, the other 50% are no different than the bureaucrats and elected officials I am forced to deal with.

  6. Mikey Rosen also took a bow for the success of the Republican BOE’s decision for vouchers.  He said he had used his radio show to promote these candidates; even had them on his show.  Free airtime for the “chosen.”
