I’m a Liberal and I am a Co-Founder of Denver’s First Black Owned Gun Range

Yep, you read that right.  At a time in America when being Black can put a target on your back, it is time to embrace all our rights, including the 2nd Amendment. I am proud of the 1770 Armory and Gun Club.

“This is a very low stress environment, from the beginner to the ranger vet, they can come in here and find use with our facility,” said 1770 Armory co-owner and lead instructor, Anubis Heru.

Our gun club hopes to change the perception of Black gun ownership in the community. The 1770 Armory is named in honor of Crispus Attucks. Heru says he was a Black and Indigenous man considered to be the first American killed in the Boston Massacre of 1770.

It seems counterproductive to ignore our 2nd Amendment.  Yes, gun violence has rocked America’s inner cities and gun violence is truly an issue for people that look like me. However, to ignore the simple fact that we have the right to protect ourselves and demand that right be given to us, in the same manner, it is given to white Americans, seems like something every Liberal / Progressive should embrace.

You all know, I am a former military officer and daughter of a Texas cowboy.  Guns in my life have been the norm and I am well trained and proficient with them.  Never in life have I felt the need to protect my home and my person as I do today.  And given the popularity of the 1770 Armory and Gun Club, I am sure that many Black and brown Americans are feeling the same way.

With the increasing attacks from the Far Far Right, we maintain professionalism in our training and in our messaging.  All of our instructors are NRA and USCCA certified and trained and our range is safe for everyone since there is no live ammunition on site.  We use SIRT technology and offer a SIMULATED INFRARED FIRING RANGE (S.I.F.R.) to train everyone. Owning a gun is a heavy weight, you must clearly understand the laws and how the law will evaluate your use of deadly force. That is where training comes in.  As military members, we spend most of our week on the range, repetition is the key to memory reflex.  That reflex will determine how you behave in a stressful situation.

I would like to invite all of you to come train with us.  This is not an advertisement to promote my business.  This is an advertisement to ensure you have done all that you can to protect your life and the life of those you love in a world where anything can happen.

Congrats on your business endeavors, WLJ. My son still takes his father, my ex the gunhead, out to plink targets occasionally. I’ll let them know about your place, which presumably will have a more inclusive atmosphere. Young Muslim women also could practice their aim without having to remove their hijab

A note on the formatting of this post- I can’t see the bottom half of your writing, under the CBS graphic. Perhaps Pols can fix that.

  2. Did that fix it?  Y'all upgraded since i have been gone… lol

Yes- I can see the rest of your article now. Very timely business…Even the great MLK was nonviolent in practice and policy, but he wasn’t stupid about self-defense. He kept guns ( and hired armed watchmen) at his home to defend his family.

I haven’t shot at a range in years- I got tired of the dog- whistle music and flyers promoting right-wing causes. But your place sounds like fun. I may stop in.

Wishing you luck in this business venture WLJ, from a Democrat, a hunter, and a responsible gun owner !

BTW I was Fidel's Dirt Nap long ago when you were on Pols.  Welcome back.
