Somewhere between the ignominious killing off of Rep. Randy Baumgardner’s Arizona copycat immigration bill today and this story told by FOX 31’s Eli Stokols, we’re beginning to think the GOP huddled over the weekend, and had realizations about some things that were hurting them:
Weeks after a public outcry over Republicans’ decision not to approve funding for a program that offers free school breakfasts to needy Colorado kids, a Republican senator has restored the funding.
Sen. Keith King, R-Colorado Springs, moved a successful amendment Wednesday to approve the $124,229 in extra funding that the Smart Start program needed to operate through the end of the current school year…
Wednesday’s move by King, also a school principal, robbed Democrats of the chance to play the hero by restoring the funds.
It seems to us that a couple of weeks ago the brand damage was done here, but Sen. Keith King still gets the nominal credit for putting this embarrassing episode to bed. Kind of like the gangster who turns state’s evidence, the people extend their thanks–sort of.
Of course, like we say, maybe it’s a whole new GOP, right?

Since Keith King was not part of the Scrooge-Fest that pulled the funding – how about we just say thank you?
Or perhaps because Republicans should have lost our trust over so many issues that we should refuse to grant them any credit unless as individuals they aren’t generally involved in this kind of shit.
Seriously – Sen. King is a voting member of the Senate caucus that elected to put Sen. Lambert on the JBC. He’s a co-sponsor of Lambert’s “papers please” bill. Should I be thanking him for being the one to put forward the amendment to restore the funding, or should we instead thank the Democrats who pointed out the inanity of the decision and put Republicans on the spot instead?
By your standard, Republicans could each take turns alternately sponsoring heinous bills or taking credit for pulling them off the table. By that measure, Republicans would look like legislative Gods.
1. Knowing that kids with breakfast do better than kids without breakfast.
2. Knowing it was going to happen anyway, so it was better to get out in front of the parade and take a bow.
Good to get it done now, but it’s not like it would not have happened without him.
So far, the Republicans have been on record for making kids go hungry, taxing movie tickets, and giving special breaks for bull semen.
That’s not change we can believe in.
When the JBC screwed up it’s funding of the program, my understanding is that he was very unhappy and told some of my friends he would work to restore the funding.
I agree with David, Thank you Senator King.
The new and improved warm-and-fuzzy GOP.
but he’s a great deal like a couple of SD 7 senators we had before Penry and Steve King, he’s conservative but truly cares about kids getting a good education. To him the breakfast was part of giving them a good start.
Sen. King deserves our thanks for that concern, and for initiating this bill restoring these funds. So, thanks.
I hate to spoil all the bipartisan love, but the story says the Governor would have put the money back in if King hadn’t.
GOP, CYA. Thank YOU Rep. King, now let’s talk PAYGO.
King took the step to get it done so he deserves credit, regardless of what ” would have ” happened after that.
A small step towards encouraging rational behavior on behalf of our Republican legislators would to be to at least recognize it when it happens.
Thank you Senator King (the one with the IQ over 50).
Enough said.
How long before he gets the “White” treatment?
And my personal boo-hiss to the Democrats who were happy to use this mess to their advantage in the press, but failed to do much of anything else in the time they had to actually rectify the situation.
Nothing says “another opportunity lost” quite as well as “Democrat.”
Nobody’s going to remember that it was a Republican who stopped the insanity and actually got the ball rolling, only that it was the Republicans who thought kids should go hungry to prove an Atlas Shrugged-inspired point.

Has anybody asked Lambert why he abandoned principle and flip-flopped?
Will any R’s vote against it when it comes to the full Senate?
Was it in the supplemental appropriations bill for the Dept of Ed? I came in in the middle of that debate.
