Giving Thanks

  •
  • by: Mejia for Mayor

In these difficult economic times it is more important than ever to give thanks for that which we do have.  As I spend time with friends and family, I will reflect on my blessings as father of three wonderful daughters and my good fortune to be married to my amazing wife Heather.  I will reflect on the sacrifices made by my parents to ensure that each of their thirteen children made it to college and will be reminded of the privilege of being born, raised, and living in the city of opportunity that we call Denver.

I have always felt that Denver is a welcoming home for new residents, is a community that looks out for those in need and is full of neighbors working to make a great city even better.  The Aguirre family is a great example…  on Thanksgiving Day, Rosalinda and the family will once again be serving a wonderful meal to all those who come to their doors.  They frequently work with hundreds of volunteers who help prepare and serve meals and even in a year when the Aguirre’s have had their own challenges, their spirit of giving cannot be denied.

With that in mind, I hope we will all look at this Thanksgiving holiday as an opportunity to help someone in need.  Whether volunteering at Rosalinda’s Restaurant, the Denver Rescue Mission, Volunteers of America, or one of the many organizations that help the less fortunate, I hope you will join me in service to the Denver community.

Above all, let’s be thankful for that which we do have, be mindful of the less fortunate, and help to make our great city even better.

James Mejia

PS Look forward to seeing many old and new friends at the Turkey Trot this morning!
