The NRA endorsed John Salazar because he is the incumbent and he has voted with the NRA in the past.
The NRA has to walk a fine line between:
1) Supporting a tolerable incumbent that caucuses powerful, NRA unfriendly politicians
2) Hoping that, against all odds, the challenger wins
The incumbent usually wins, even when Congress polls very low. And voters do not always pay attention to the whole record; like so many successful Democrats Salazar runs to the Right and legislates from the Left.
Larry Kudlow (CNBC commentator) wrote, on election day 2008, “31 percent of voters believe Obama is the real tax cutter, while only 11 percent chose McCain.” Ran to the Right, legislates from the Left.
And there is no question that Salazar is a man of the Left:
1) Americans for Democratic Action (Left): Salazar at 85 lies between Markey (70) and Polis (95)
2) American Conservative Union (Right): Salazar and Markey are tied at 8, with Polis at 4
And he caucuses with and supports party leaders Pelosi and DeGette who hope to squash the NRA one day.
Why can’t Republicans win by leading from the Left and ruling from the right?
