A charismatic guy comes into town, swears up and down that he’s your man, you choose him to be your standard-bearer… and then, when he’s used you to get what he wants, he dumps you.
Sound familiar? It’s the Tancredo Way.
In the 1990s, Tancredo became the poster boy for U.S. Term Limits, winning a Congressional seat largely on his promise to abide by term limits. That promise was what distinguished him from his competitors: in fact, he mercilessly criticized his opponents who wouldn’t take the same three-term pledge he did.
Then, of course, he broke his own pledge when it came time to make good on it.
Now Tancredo gets the Colorado gubernatorial nomination of the hapless American Constitution Party. Its original nominee, some rube named Big Ben Goss, meekly hands over the nomination to Tancredo after he waltzes into the ACP offices, promising to get them on the map. Tancredo swears repeatedly that he’s “in it to win it” if the ACP makes him their man.
Then, within weeks, Tancredo is proposing to drop out of the race altogether if Dick Wadhams can persuade Dan Maes to drop out as well in favor of some smoke-filled-room candidate anointed by … well, not anointed by the ACP, anyway! They won’t have a seat at that table!
It’s just ridiculously callous, opportunistic and insulting to his supporters. Tancredo has a lot of nerve criticizing Mexican mothers for “drop and run” tactics with anchor babies: he’s the original “drop and run” candidate. He uses a political position to get some sort of personal advantage, then he jettisons it as soon as it’s convenient for him to do so.

note that TT conditioned his pulling out on Maes dropping out.
What are the chances ?
.
And then even if he does, what are the chances, after tricking Maes to quit, that he maybe doesn’t drop out, after all ?
This party is just getting started. Hold on to your beret.
.
.
for holding different values and different religious beliefs, you assert that Ben Goss and I are rubes.
Guessing that if you had an argument you would have presented it, but insults are so much easier.
.
So much more dignified and honorable for you to swear allegiance to THE PARTY, rather than thinking and deciding things for yourself. After all, governance is about power, not principle, right ?
.
especially in the context of Tom Tancredo.
I meant the “rubes” comment only in the sense that Goss was naively swindled by a bait-and-switcher.
You folks are getting used by somebody who’s going to throw you under the bus whenever it suits his personal ambitions/desires. Just ask U.S. Term Limits.
But I shouldn’t have called Goss a “rube.”
I don’t know or care what your religious beliefs are. I do think that regarding the governing of our communities, our state and our nation one should care much more about what will be the best for the group than whether a candidate’s religious beliefs correspond with our own. When a voter does not do that then I think they are farther along the continuum toward unAmerican.
When folks campaign based on anything close to religion they lose my support. When they succor to those who try to make religious/superstitous beliefs something important they will lose my support.
.
Gay marriage; pro-choice; etc.
Unless you got you some science to back them up, it’s just your religion against mine.

It was because I believed I was the best person for the job, or because enough people I trust think so. I truly despise people who throw their hat in the ring for any other reason. No one who is seeking an elected position should ever be bargaining with their withdrawal form the race. I used to respect Josh Penry, until he did the same thing.
TT is a despicable self-righteous weasel. He ran for President to advance his racist rhetoric and now he is running for Governor just to spite someone he doesn’t like. He doesn’t believe that he can win and he’s not trying to win. He is just trying to scorch everyone else in the race, and the only way to get enough attention is to be a part of it.
What’s worse, is that he is going to damage the down-ticket races for the GOP.
I thought Bush Jr. was a bad President, but I never believed he was a bad person. I believe that he truly thought he was doing what was best for this country and I have great respect for him. But nothing about TT’s conduct can convince me that he cares about his country, his state, or his (former) party in the least. He is everything that is bad in politics concentrated into a single unpleasant persona.
