Crow Impresses on First Day of Impeachment Trial

  • by: Colorado Pols

Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Yuma), who sits dutifully behind President Trump’s legal team on the floor of the U.S. Senate, has been getting hammered in national news outlets for his blind obedience to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Team Trump despite an oath to be an “impartial juror” in the President’s impeachment trial.

Colorado Rep. Jason Crow (D-Aurora), meanwhile, is earning rave reviews for his performance as one of seven House “impeachment managers” prosecuting the case against Trump. Here’s NBC News Capitol Hill Correspondent Kasie Hunt on Tuesday:

In Gardner and Crow, Colorado has two high-profile connections to the Senate impeachment trial of President Trump. The contrast couldn’t be more stark.

From The Daily Caller:

Tuesday’s session lasted almost 13 hours, according to CNBC. Crow, a former Army Ranger, spoke late into the evening and noted that despite the late hour, it was morning in Ukraine, where soldiers were fighting Russia and depending on U.S. aid. He previously served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“The American people deserve answers,” Crow said Tuesday. “I remember what it feels like to not have the equipment you need when you need it. Real people’s lives are at stake. That’s why this matters. We need this information so we can ensure that this never happens again. Eventually, this will all come out.”

[mantra-pullquote align=”right” textalign=”left” width=”70%”]“We will have answers to these questions. The question now is whether we will have them in time, and who here will be on the right side of history.”

— Rep. Jason Crow (D-Aurora)[/mantra-pullquote]

Justin Wingerter of The Denver Post has more on Crow’s performance from Tuesday:

Crow took to the Senate floor in the evening to argue for a subpoena of documents from OMB, where testimony and media reports suggest officials were concerned by Trump’s withholding of military aid to Ukraine.

“We know these documents exist and we know the only reason we do not have them is because the president directed OMB not to release them,” Crow said, referring to what he claims are key documents that reveal how the president’s controversial order was enacted. “Because he knows what they would show.”

Crow went through a timeline of events related to the withholding of aid to Ukraine in the summer of 2019, punctuating his remarks on several occasions by saying, “The American people deserve answers.” Crow talked about his own combat service in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the importance of military aid to soldiers in wartime.

“Who knew what, and when? OMB documents would shed light on OMB’s actions as the president’s scheme unraveled,” the congressman said.

Crow’s background as an Army Ranger who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan allows him to frame the withholding of military aid from Ukraine in a very personal manner; there aren’t many Members of Congress who could have the same impact, as you can see from this CNN clip below:

One member of Colorado’s Congressional delegation is standing up for what he believes and making a passionate case for his colleagues to follow. The other is Cory Gardner.

Kudos to Jason Crow.

  1. Sekulow is still arguing in that clip that there was no crime because the military aid to Ukraine was delivered, and yes, indeed it was. AFTER YOU WERE BUSTED FOR WITHHOLDING IT ! Sheesh.

And yes, great job Jason Crow.

  2. Rep. Crow also got a bit of time during the Department of Defense document subpoena amendment.

Democrats very clearly had this first day planned out clearly. Sen. Schumer introduced separate amendments for subpoenas for every important facet of this impeachment, and House managers had the legal reasoning and the public presentation for each ready and waiting. Knowing that this might be their only chance to argue for witnesses and documents, they set up an unassailable narrative that Republicans don't want to know the facts, whether exculpatory or incruminating. Of course, the facts are damning enough already.

    1. Ignoring the pfruit stains, I agree that Jason Crow was outstanding. I was also very impressed by Val Demings, Adam Schiff, and the other impeachment managers.

It will take great public pressure to have a more fair trial, and everyone should contact their Senators today, write letters to the editor, etc., to push for that.

NPR has great live audio coverage of the Senate hearings: https://www.npr.org/2020/01/22/797320569/with-the-rules-set-senate-trial-opening-arguments-begin

      1. You must be kidding. After three years of being lied to you think letters to the editor is solution. Time to pull out the vagina hats and go door to door, convincing your neighbors of the serious threat of Donald Trump. Better get on it this will be over soon.

        1. Did he request a foreign government to get involved in our election?  yes

Did he direct holding Congresionally mandating spending in violation of the impoundment act? yes

          Two crimes.

          Witnesses? Documents?
Nah, we don't need them and besides the big guy acknowledged today that he won't release any documents or allow any testimony because it damages his case.

It's really too bad his bone spurs kept him out of uniform. He would have been a great soldier and we all would have benefited by his service.

And please make up your mind- was this impachement rushed through or has been going on for 3 + years?

Flyn should be in prison, despite his service.
Manafort and the rest – well, you know what they say about the company someone keeps.

            1. Well – the way I am hearing it is inappropriate for sure, wrong,  probably illegal, but not deserving of removal.

But sure – if you want to call that not guilty, I’ll go further than that.
              Exonerated! Innocent! Victimized! Her emails!

The president is going to go even further. He’ll see aquittal as a green light to do anything.
So ok – “not guilty,” just like Bill Clinton, right? Well, HRC too – she spent many many more hours testifying under oath about whatever Congressional committee wanted to swear her in and ask whatever than Trump.  Bill Clinton too – and in the end, Clintons were not guilty, right?

        2. Have you made that $30 donation to Warren yet, Pear? A bet’s a bet. Impeachment: accomplished. Articles: delivered.

However, I’d pay real money to see you knocking doors for Warren, wearing a “vagina hat”, whatever that is. So there’s that.

          1. Well kwtree, since you and I are friends I sent you a message on Facebook that indeed I made the $30 donation to Liz Warren. If you need to see the receipt I can forward it to one of your email accounts. To show you how competent the Warren campaign is, I have even gotten a single email blast about contributing again. Now Tulsi, she sends me donation request at least every three days.

You look much better in the vagina hat. I think it would be a powerful message to voters if you, “V” and Cook, would put on your hats and go door to door, proclaiming the virtue of extremism.devil

            1. V would look…..interesting in a vagina hat (again, I have no visual reference, so you’d have to post a pic of yours), but I doubt that he would be going anywhere with me, and where I’d want him to go is too warm to wear any hat.

Certainly none of us would be proclaiming the virtues of extremism. As a right wing extremist yourself, I leave that to your expertise.

What are the virtues of proclaiming that all taxation is bad, government should be subservient to corporations, that free speech should be limited to those who agree with you, that a nation of immigrants should close its borders,  that a President is above the law?

cook and I are actually friends, and may end up phonebanking together for some candidate or other.

Thank you for keeping your word and making a donation to our next President, Elizabeth Warren.

              1. Ewe mama can I get in on the Elizabeth Warren bet? If she wins the election I will donate $1,000 to any organization of your choice. If she does not, you do $1,000 to one of mine.  You know my word is bond I have lost to you before.

                1. Too rich for my blood, but $10 on 2020madness.com lets you bet against others in the Democratic primary, with the eventual nominee taking the whole pot. That I would do. Put $10 on Warren, or the candidate of your choice- if A Dem beats $rump, I’ll donate to whatever gunsucking “nonprofit” you like.

                  1. That would have me losing the bet before the primary. How bout Warren wins the presidency I donate to $10 to any org of your choice, and if she doesn't $10 to the org of mine?

Or I'll gladly put $10 on Warren on the site you mentioned, but you put $10 on the Trump team, and the loser pays it back to the winner? I just don't see you donating to Trump, which is understandable.

    1. jealous much?

Volunteer and pick up a weapon and stand a post, or say thank you and carry on. Either way…

Forgot law school – you couldn't afford it or hack it.

  3. Moddy, I'd wager you know exactly fuck-all about trying a case.  But hold onto your MAGA hat and matching boxer set, I'm sure they'll increase in value

    1. Moddy, I'd wager you know exactly fuck-all about trying a case.

Or about anything else, with the possible exceptions of kiddie porn and urine fetishism.
