And business executives,

And they’re all made out of ticky tacky

And they all look just the same.

  1. The Rockies season is almost over.

2 years ago this week I was getting ready for the DNC.

2 Years ago next week we were at Mile Hi.

It’s back to school time of year – except for the laid off teachers and staff.

The trees are starting to look like late summer, time to prune and transplant.

    Sunny and hot.

    1. What’s that number the RNC used in their “stripes ad” Hickenlooper-Ritter and 140,000 newly unemployed Coloradans?

Today the State is quietly releasing our CSAP scores … no Governor … apparently a small live presser with some deputy assistant commissioner.

            1. The meatpacking industry still has the highest rate of injury of any industry in the US…and is considered “the most dangerous factory job in America”. Because we don’t need unions, decent wages or protection for workers anymore, haven’t you heard?

                  1. you too.

I noticed you’ve grown silent on the issue of the day. I’m not even sure who you supported any more! Or am I just reading the wrong diaries?

                    1. I voted, I don’t think my recommendation matters all that much to the 3 people left reading this blog that haven’t voted and I’m not into circle jerking much, know what I mean?

  2. Finally, the clouds parted enough to drag the scope out of the garage.

Seeing was good, 4 out of 5, transparency was good, 4 out of 5.

Spent three hours outdoors.  Smelled a skunk so I put the dogs back indoors.  Saw stuff I had never seen before.  Only got 5-1/2 hours of sleep, so I should be a zombie by the time the polls close tonight.

    I don’t do naps.

    1. I had a telescope here when I was a kid.  I think I spent more time with it horizontal aimed at the Russell’s house across the bayou hoping…hoping…hoping.

But in the astro vein, I just heard an interview on NPR a few days ago with the lead guitar of Queen, Ron May IIRC.  Seems he is now an astrophysicist!

    2. for a good scope for me to buy for my family? I’ve been thinking of a Meade or Celestron with equatorial mount, 130-150 mm aperture? Any suggestions? TIA…

        1. shoot me an e-mail, or I could give you my cell number. I did some research on an amateur astronomy web-site, but would appreciate any input you might have.

    3. Built his own telescope in high school, which he still uses.

We’re planning on watching the next transit of Venus from Grand Mesa. That’s in 2012. You interested it checking that out?

    1. It’s been really kinda funny hearing all the sturm und drang from the Romanoffs and Bennets. It’s probably precisely BECAUSE there’s really no difference at all between the two on matters of policy.

  3. Last night the full Council went on to mandate the use of E-Verify by City Contractors.

But alas, its only newly hired employees that will get processes, companies can “vouch” for their existing employees. As Charlie Brown put it …

No citizen or legal resident should have to compete with workers who are here illegally

    1. For acknowledging that Denver is not a “Sanctuary City.”

Can you get the word out to Peter Boyles so he can shut up and get back to fulminating about Barack Obama’s birth certificate?

      1. Love such a good use of an underused word.  In my unbreakfasted state, I have a vision of Boyles as volcano, much steam and lava ensuing from his head, and all the little people downstream fleeing for their lives.

        1. He just gets so tiresome. When I flick through the radio dials in the morning, more often than not I hear Boyles talking to his good buddy Tom Tancredo, or some wingnut talking about Obama’s birth certificate…

Boyles is sounding more and more like a cranky old “Get off my lawn!” man.

Makes me miss the good old days when it was JonBenet Ramsey 24/7.

        1. there everywhere.  There everywhere.

Put it to music, add a couple exclamation points, and this might be sufficiently enigmatic to pass for Mojo Nixon’s lyrics. 😉

    1. Because Sarah Palin’s sure got a handle on motherhood, she can just go right ahead and lecture the rest of the country with her self-serving bullshit. Meanwhiler, her

“Sarah PAC” fleecing operation can make hagiographic videos of her to justify the millions of dollars her consultants are making off the little piggy bank she’s got set up.

What a paragon of Motherhood! And Americanness! The Founders! The Flag! Don’t look behind the curtain!

    2. I love that in what looks like a very professional video they had to use someone waving a sign that was not even grammatically correct, or they didn’t notice. Is it really so hard to find enough people at a Palin rally who can spell and use grammar correctly to make one 2 minute clip?

16 seconds in and we are already reading something that says “Annoy Liberal. Work Hard & Pay your own bills.” Apparently, even liberals are like moose in Alaska, you don’t need to pluralize when talking about multiple occurrences.

      1. those misspellings and malaprops are directly from Rove/Bush’s playbook, speaking to the lowest common denominator of Americans who think anyone who CAN speak, read and write properly is part of the Eastern establishment elite. Don’t kid yourself that this isn’t EXACTLY what they wanted put it that video for their purposes.

          1. The undereducated aren’t represented by Republicans so much as manipulated by them to vote against their own self-interest so that the rich will continue to get their tax breaks and live in luxury.

Democrats are better at representing those who have no voice in our society because and get this they actually care about the most vulnerable.

I guess you missed Ms. Celebrity having her goons tear up the sign calling her the worst governor ever in the state of Alaska.  So much for cherishing the 1st amendment by Ms Political Celebrity.

            1. That’s why I’m voting for Ken Buck. Norton has all the money because the rich know she will promote their interests. Ken represents grassroots Coloradoans.

        1. But if you really want people to watch what you share, you ought to try posting stuff that’s worthwhile. I don’t think you’ve done that even once since you joined our happy little family.

  4. Let’s not forget that we don’t have a poll from Rasmussen about any of today’s races.

Rasmussen is a GOP tool designed to drive a right wing agenda that attempts to promote the weakest Dem candidate against the strongest GOP candidate via hypothetical matchups.

A legitimate pollster would produce a poll indicating the projected results of today’s primary.  Rasmussen doesn’t do that.

So, I propose that any anyone citing Rasmussen on this site be fined $25 for each infraction.

  5. This is from the Denver Government web site.

    13) Voter Service Centers (listed by City Council District, below) will be open Monday, July 26 to Monday, August 9, (except Sundays) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Election Day, August 10, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Locations that have a drive-through ballot drop off lane are marked in bold type.

    District 1: Scheitler Recreation Center, 5031 W. 46th Ave.

District 2: Harvey Park Recreation Center, 2120 S. Tennyson Way

District 3: Barnum Recreation Center, 360 Hooker St.

District 4: Christ Community Church, 8085 E. Hampden Ave.

District 5: Montclair Recreation Center, 729 Ulster Way District 6: Washington Park Recreation Center, 701 S. Franklin St.

District 7: Harvard Gulch Recreation Center, 550 E. Iliff Ave.

    District 8: Blair-Caldwell Library, 2401 Welton St.

District 9: Quigg Newton Senior Recreation Center, 4430 Navajo St.

District 10: Christ Church United Methodist, 690 Colorado Blvd.

    District 10: Denver Elections Division, 200 W. 14th Ave.

District 11: Hiawatha Davis Jr. Recreation Center, 3334 N. Holly St.

    District 11: Montbello Recreation Center, 15555 E. 53rd Ave.

    1. Before I give advice to a friend, can someone confirm that a person who lives in Denver can visit any of these locations today and pick up and submit a replacement ballot (theirs was lost) as long as they arrive before 7pm?

  6. from CNN

Slater picked up the intercom and used expletives directed at the passengers, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation. It is not clear exactly what was said on the intercom. The source said that when the plane at stopped at the gate, Slater then grabbed some beer from the beverage cart before deploying the emergency slide and using it to leave the plane.

    1. I fly all the time and can’t believe the crap flight attendants put up with from the flying public – and the airlines.

After the idiot passenger refused to take his seat, Slater, a career flight attendant, opened the emergency door,  yelled ‘It’s been GREAT!’, and slid down the emergency chute with his can of beer, then ran across the tarmac to employee parking and drove home.

They ought to erect a statue to him!

    1. May be up to 4 possible survivors–some confusion as to how many were on board.

A female doctor stayed with them throughout the night, according to CNN. Rescuers have reached the plane but no word on whether Stevens survived. Horrible weather is hampering rescue efforts and communication.

Stevens first wife died in the plane crash in 1978.

  7. as a child in Catholic school. Such a subversive song to teach in such a conservative institution I’ve always thought. Must have been the fruits of Vatican II!

    🙂

        1. according to the Bennetistas who made great show of hurt feelings amid charges of disabled discrimination for suggesting that Bennet’s triumph over dyslexia in the second grade was off the table for commentary.

          But I digress…

  8. Hick campaign kicks out reporter.

    http://facethestate.com/articl

High-level staff members at Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper’s gubernatorial campaign headquarters today refused to answer questions about the amount of money the mayor received from three prominent local businessmen in a land deal involving the sale of tax credits from 2003 to 2005.

Is this the next big expose in the Gov.’s race or will the Denver tabloid daily and Pols ignore it because it’s about Hick?

    1. Is what happens when there’s nothing good to say about your own candidate.

Didn’t you call out David for whining because he couldn’t get an interview with Scott?  This guy’s whining twice as loud.

      1. until it was pointed out to me by (gasp) a Democrat.

On David – I did recommend an interview last Fall and if you like will revisit the reason why he was turned down via e-mail.  You might recall at the time almost everyone on Pols thought Penry was the golden boy against Scott and was saying so.

        1. He’s a good summary of the article…

For a week now, FTS investigative reporter Jared Jacang Maher has been diligently tracking down details of a complex tax transaction in which Hickenlooper, prior to becoming mayor, purchased land in Park County for the purposes of conservation. In doing so he earned a valuable tax credit, which later was sold to three prominent Denver businessmen, as is allowed under state law. The transactions were disclosed on city financial reports at the time, but the deal has received no public media scrutiny.

          http://facethestate.com/by-the

          1. So why is this a story again? So much for Jared Jacang Maher ever being considered a “journalist,” a very bad decision to take Brad Jones’ money.

      1. He’s avoided the media and any real probing questions on his positions. However, what I found really interesting was the http://www.whosaidyousaid.com story on why he hasn’t endorsed Bennet yet…

Should Bennet survive Tuesday’s primary, none of it may matter. However, if Bennet loses, and particularly if he loses narrowly, here’s my question: how many votes could Hickenlooper have moved with a well-timed endorsement of his old pal?

        http://www.whosaidyousaid.com/

    2. Davis told Face the State, “You’re not an accredited news source and we’re not going to work with you. And that’s the end of this discussion.” Davis would not define what the campaign considers to be an “accredited news source.”

(Editor’s note: FTS reporters are credentialed by the Colorado Broadcasters Association, of which we are proud associate members.)

And for just $150, you too can be a proud associate member of the CBA! Join today to be “credentialed” just like FTS reporters, The Salvation Army, the Cherry Creek Insurance Agency, and the Colorado Department of Transportation!

  9. This is pretty funny, though.  What’s $26 billion now, though?  A mere drop in the bucket compared to porkulus and the worst bill passed in my lifetime.

(CNSNews.com) – Washington Democrats are in such a rush to pass one more stimulus-type bill that the legislation to be voted on Tuesday doesn’t even have a name, Republicans note.

As CNET reported, a watchdog Web site on Sunday evening noted that the Democrats’ $26-billion spending measure includes a few blank spaces.

Congress’ official Web site calls it the ‘______Act  of____,’ and the Library of Congress’ Thomas Web site displays it as the ‘XXXXXX Act of XXXX.'”

“A nameless bill for a hopeless cause is a fitting metaphor for a Democratic Congress that refuses to listen to the American people and abandon its job-killing agenda,” said House Republican Leader John Boehner (Ohio).

Boehner on Monday offered 10 possible names for what he called the “union-boss bailout” bill:

    — Save Our ‘Stimulus’ (SOS) Act

    — ‘Recovery Summer’ Bailout Act (Cash for Flunkers)

    — Delivering Unions a Major Boost (DUMB) Act

    — Helping Election Expenditures, Hurting American Workers (HEEHAW) Act

    — Democracy is Strengthened by Clearly Leveraging and Optimizing Special-Interests’ Effectiveness (DISCLOSE) Act

    — Holding Union Bosses Over Until Card Check Act

    — Rescuing Incumbent Democrats Is Costly (RIDIC) Act

    — Summertime Cash for Union Bosses Instead of Spending Cuts for Taxpayers Act

    — Frivolous Act of Ineffective Largesse (FAIL) Act

    — Naming These Things Hasn’t Gotten Us Anywhere, So Why Bother? Act

    1. According to the Associated Press, the bill to be voted on Tuesday provides $10 billion to school districts to rehire laid-off teachers or ensure that more teachers won’t be let go before the new school year begins.

The other half of the bill provides $16 billion for six more months of increased Medicaid payments to the states. That would free up money for states to meet other budget priorities, including keeping more than 150,000 police officers and other public workers on the payroll.

    2. Bush’s blunder makes trying to revive our economy seem like a noble effort.  I guess it wasn’t technically a bill but our country has been in the tank ever since.  Something about reaping what you sow.

FYI: ARRA grant money is being used in Gilpin County to do fire mitigation along Highway 119 leading to Nederland as part of the evacuation route in the event of an uncontrolled wildfire.  I’m thinking it is a bargain and hires local loggers who need the work.  Keep them employeed until the timber industry can retool.  Pouring a trillion dollars into the sands of Iraq for no improvement in our security looks like one of the biggest fiscal mistakes Republicans have ever done.

    1. It was a hard decision, as I respect both candidates greatly.   I think that Sen. Bennet has done a fantastic job, and I respect all of Romanoff’s accomplishments during his tenure as speaker.

Ultimately, I had to think back on what I thought of each of them when I met them or heard them speak.   Ultimately, while Sen. Bennet is a very smart, well-spoken and reasoned man, I felt that Romanoff always showed a level of compassion for and interest in the lives of Coloradoans that I have never seen in a politician.

I won’t be unhappy with the results either way. I think regardless we will end up with a great Senator.

    1. …long ago (pre-wife and shorties)…

To go to the R events early in the evening because the food and booze were better and flowing freely, and then to the Dem events later on to meet chicks.

  10. For all my friends working on both sides of this hard-fought battle: Congrats on a hell of an effort.

Sorry only one side can win.  We’re fortunate to have both Sen. Bennet and Former Speaker Romanoff as major Democratic figures in the state.

  11. Libby, LB and Ellie square off against MOTD, Voyageur and Ralphie and all the others involved on both sides.

Looking forward to some really fabulous scrums in the general.  The primary was kind of the preseason with both sides scrimmaging with each other.  Stakes go up on Wednesday when the regular season starts.  Yahoo!
