Popularity Contest - bjwilson83 vs. Aristotle

  • by: Aristotle

(Promoting this bit of whimsy in honor of our reigning “Kick Me Kid,” BJWilson   – promoted by Voyageur)

I’m just trying to see if we can make a point that bjwilson83 will understand. This is purely fun, and not meant to reflect on the value of either of our arguments/contributions to Colorado Pols.

Who is more popular with you - bjwilson83 or Aristotle?

    1. Actually I remember reading a paper (wish I could track it down again to reference here) about the roles a person had in life often being the same sort of role they had in high school.  And on that depressing note have a some music:

    1. And I even remember that Al Davis was the original commissioner of the American Football League.  Al has a lot of failings but he remembered that the NFL had absorbed an earlier rival by taking in a few teams (notably the Cleveland Browns) and letting the rest die.   When the NFL made similar overtures to the AFL, Davis insisted all eight teams — including the then very weak Broncos — be taken in or nothing.’

His firmness and fairness kept pro football in Denver and a lot of other then weak franchises, including the New York Titans, later Jets.

Of course, that doesn’t change the fact that the Raiders Suck;-)  But it does put it in perspective.

      1. Their original owner was sportscast Harry Wismer, famous for the invention of the 60-yard line.  He was broadcasting a game once when a back broke loose:

          “He’s to the forty…the fifty…the sixty”

I always sympathathized with him as a former sportswriter myself with UPI.  That backward counting thing is hard to remember;-)

  1. Wow, I just voted and looked at the results and I almost feel bad for bj.  It’s like he/she is the kid on the playground that nobody likes because they are trying soooo hard to be cool, soooo hard to be liked, sooo hard to be relevant.

Do we ever leave high school?

        1. What I’m saying is what I said.

But that’s not a bad analogy either.  Except that Doug Bruce doesn’t have a Mrs. Wilson who gave Dennis cookies.  Or maybe he does now.  Did he ever score that mail-order Russian bride?

    1. …. that, prior to voting, one may click on the “view results” link and see how the vote is going before committing.

That said, anyone who takes this seriously, esp. bj and myself, needs a life in the biggest way. And I’m not saying that this applies to you, GFaBUN.

        1. (although we’re tied as I write this.) OQD was one of my two or three favorite Polsters ever, and I know that no one would say the same of me.

    2. Then you just wake up one day and say “F*ck it.” It’s amazing how confidence and personality become much more attractive than neediness and annoyance.

BJ’s problem is that he demands attention and doesn’t care if it’s positive or negative. As long as he feels people are paying attention to him his ego is satisfied. I can only imagine how hollow and lonely a life that would be.

    1. Ken Buck is not absolutely perfect in every way.  Very good, maybe, but not perfect.

That will bring BJ out of his lair, fangs unsheathed and epithets flying;-)

        1. Beej posts something so obnoxious that I realize we’re not being nearly mean enough!

I’ll let you in on a secret though: I’m actually rooting for him. He’s a 27 year old jackass who still might have a chance to grow into someone merely inoccuous and bearable. As annoying as he may be, I’m hoping he makes the leap at some point, and soon. After all is said and done, I actually wish him well. But unless his fortress of self-delusion comes crashing down, and he actually experiences the humiliation of recognizing that to others he (at least that aspect of him manifested here) is pretty much what we all keep trying to tell him he is, there’s little chance that things will turn out well for him in the long run. So, it’s a service we’re performing….

You didn’t know that being mean could be such an altruistic, socially responsible act, now did you? 😉

              1. The kiddo I still have at home is 18, but with a developmental delay that affects things like his understanding and use of words. I’ve gotten a lot of practice in translating, thanks to him. 🙂

So one way to handle this is to say things that are in fact correct, but leave the nuances unstated. “I laughed because someone hoped the person we were talking about is sterile. Sterile means something is safe to touch because it doesn’t have germs.”

The original meaning is even there, if you consider the use of ‘germs’ to include the old phrase about ‘the germ of life’, or even ‘germination’.

                1. it’s beginning to take on a certain baby seal clubbing quality. I know the comparison suffers from the lack of cuteness in BJ posts vs extreme cuteness of baby seals but even so.  I think our job here is done.

                  1. The problem is, even if I were to resolve to be kinder and gentler now, he’d post something so obnoxious in an hour, or a day, that I would be constitutionally incapable of feeling any compassion for him (unfortunately, because being obnoxious doesn’t really mean being undeserving of compassion).

I think the more compelling point is the one that some wisely recognized months ago: He’s a troll, regardless of how he perceives himself, and completely beyond the reach of logic or humiliation.

                    1. At best, it’s impolite to pile insults on the guy when he’s not even here. I’m with BC, this has taken on a certain unattractive, gleeful quality bashing the guy. Enough.

                    2. ..that I was the only one who defended fair BJ against the onslaught of unfair attacks he received yesterday.  Yes, I am good.

  2. … he was a lunatic, but he was a pretty good writer, and he didn’t make up facts so much as offer wacko conspiratorial interpretation of facts.

    1. were a natural cage-match. In one post, when they were both posting prolifically, I mistook one for the other (I put in a post to Beej a comment that only made sense if directed to GE). GE was rip-roaringly nuts, but, yeah, he did actually put thoughts together in some systematic order, and often made actual arguments. I’d have to vote for him over Beej, any day.

    1. to go back over his posts and link to a long list of examples that completely disprove your characterization (posts that boasted of his talent at being obnoxious, for instance), that’s just too much of an investment. Instead I’ll say, if that’s what you call “respect,” then either you’ve read a very selective selection, or your ideologically tinted glasses trump all other evidence.

Did you do anything fun for your birthday?

    2. the word “respect” to describe what BJ shows this community.

Ali, YOU show this community respect. I often disagree with your arguments or positions but find them well thought out and well defended. You are polite towards both people that agree as well and especially those that disagree. I would never put you and BJ in the same category and by stating the he shows respect would be doing just that.

  3. even before the Dark Ages, people developed empathy (the word that Glen Beck most fears). As we became empathetic we began to operate in such a way as to foul evolution. Hence, the existence of folks like BJ (and Beck for that matter), who if they really had to use all their wits and skills to get their next meal, would starve in days.

We empathetic socialists and progressives are responsible.

    1. Must ask tho–did you mean “foil” evolution.  Foul used there is fun, for sure, but definitely a usage new to me.

Some days I wish I could turn in my empathy gene ;-(

            1. Well, it’s French for either “baby horse” or “BJ”. You pick.

(Disclaimer: by “French,” I mean “not belonging to any known human language, unless by completely random chance”).

    2. And last I checked, Beck is doing quite well using his wits and skills to get his next meal. I heard today he made $34 million last year.

      1. which, by all available evidence, is very broadly shared by everyone other than BJ. Shameful! It’s like the bias that the world revolves around the sun! In a poll between the heliocentric and geocentric theories of the Solar System, heliocentrism would benefit from that bias! And therefore, such a poll would be completely unfair to those who adhere to the Ptolemeic view….

    1. as you were unable to answer my challenge to back up your claim that I’m biased, I declare victory over you on that point. I am not biased; BJ is proven wrong. Let the record show this.

      1. while you were hiding.  Now I just feel like I need a shower.  We honestly don’t know that you are conservative or what you are. We have yet to extract anything coherent from your posts. Ahh…that feels  better.

  4. I’m flattered that everybody was waiting with baited breath to see how I would respond. Kind of makes me feel like the President or something. Anyway, just to set your minds at rest, no I wasn’t ignoring it. I was out campaigning for my favorite candidate. Beautiful weather, perfect day for a parade! Lots of support. Eat your heart out. 🙂

    1. The correct spelling is actually bated breath but it’s so common these days to see it written as baited breath that there’s every chance that it will soon become the usual form, to the disgust of conservative speakers and the confusion of dictionary writers. –World Wide Words

Actually, the notion of you with a fishhook and worm hanging out of your tongue is a rather beguiling one.

      1. that term screwed up, but now, with the image you just formed to hold on to, I will laugh in the future.

You’ve done good work today, Voyageur.

    2. By a 10 to 1 margin, people think you’re an asshole.

You can get a hard-on about that if you like, but most normal people wouldn’t.

Does your adviser know how you spend your time?  Mine would have been pissed.

  5. I know there were a couple gripings (is that a real world?) about this whole thing being frontpaged, but still, with over 78 comments, I think Aristotle and Voyageur may have a knack for knowing what the copols community likes.

Kudos to you two for a little fun today.
