Last week, the organizers of two more misguided recall attempts against Colorado progressive lawmakers announced that their efforts have failed. A week after the recall campaign against Gov. Jared Polis ended in failure, Senators Pete Lee and Brittany Pettersen stopped the far right cold in their Colorado Springs and Lakewood districts.
Five Republican recall attempts this year have ended in failure, and another against Senate President Leroy Garcia in Pueblo is reportedly on its last legs.
Colorado voters didn’t elect progressives overwhelmingly in 2018 by accident. Our state has been moving away from radical right-wing politics for years now, and the election of Donald Trump mobilized Colorado voters to send Republicans packing at every level in last November’s elections. Now the crucial 2020 election is right around the corner, and Colorado progressives are fired up and organized to win again while conservatives are still trying to figure out what went wrong.
We couldn’t have beaten the recalls without your help. The tremendous outpouring of support for targeted progressive lawmakers in Colorado in 2019 showed the world that the victories of 2018 were not a fluke. Your timely action to knock on doors, write letters, make phone calls, and of course your financial support made all the difference turning back the far right’s “summer of recalls.”
Thanks again for everything you’ve done to stand up for progressive values this year. Here are a few more great ways to make a difference for the week of September 16:

Public Comment at Aurora City Council: Abolish Aurora GEO
Aurora City Council meetings are held on scheduled Mondays at the Aurora Municipal Center, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway. The formal city council meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in the City Council Chamber. We advise arriving at 7 pm to sign up for general public comment. City council meetings are open to the public. Believe Denver Launch, Suicide Prevention & Youth Support
All are welcome! FREE event with Attorney General Phil Weiser and community leaders to discuss the challenges facing Colorado’s kids and how we can come together to support our youth. Suicide is the leading cause of death in Colorado for ages 10 to 24 and the Colorado teen suicide rate is nearly twice the national average.

In UndocuMonologues Motus Theater’s undocumented presenters share autobiographical monologues about their lives, hopes, fears, and dreams. Their performances interrupt the dehumanizing portrayals of immigrants by encouraging thoughtful engagement with the challenges facing the undocumented community and the assets immigrants bring to our country.

Reproductive Rights Roadshow on Auraria Campus
JOIN US for lunch & learn how the Colorado Reproductive Health Rights and Justice Coalition is working to preserve and strengthen reproductive rights in Colorado. Keep Abortion Safe will lead an exercise where participants will learn about the stigma, lack of information and services that exist when accessing abortion care. The first event of our Bold Women. Change History. series. Join the conversation. Meet six women who were firsts in Colorado civic life. This year, Colorado’s House of Representatives made news when women comprised a majority of its lawmakers. Today’s history-making legislature has roots in the stories of Colorado women who were the first to break barriers in their state. This discussion, moderated by celebrated local journalist Anne Trujillo, brings together elected and former officials who were the first to serve in their roles as senators, house speakers, and lieutenant governors.

March for Justice – Enough!
From El Paso to Gilroy, unabashedly public white supremacist violence against people of color and historically marginalized communities has surged. It’s undeniable that the current presidential administration’s hateful rhetoric has contributed to these incidents. But for the U.S.’s many racialized peoples, these incidents are sadly familiar. White supremacist violence–whether extralegal (i.e. lynchings), legal (i.e. ICE raids), or institutionalized (i.e. mass incarceration) has haunted Black, American Indian, Chicanx, Latinx, Asian, Muslim, and Jewish life since this country’s colonial inception. And combined with misogyny, ableism, classism, and patriarchal cisheterosexism, that same white supremacy’s economic and eugenic impulses especially threaten womxn, our disabled siblings, our poor, and our LGBTQ+ community members. It’s time to say ENOUGH!

Saturday Postcard Event in SoBo Lucky’s Market Cafe
Every Saturday, we invite activists as well as political, municipal and school board candidates to come mingle and do something meaningful together: writing postcards! Right now we are writing decline to sign postcards against the recall of Senator Leroy Garcia. With 2019 and 2020 elections coming up, we will likely be writing different postcards depending on what the most urgent needs are. Please note that the location of the event has been moved (across the parking lot!) to SoBo Lucky’s Market Cafe. The space will be reserved for us every Saturday and it will provide ample room for a candidate to speak if needed.
