  1. Is there anyone out there that actually thought last night’s speech even approached anything resembling competency or leadership?

When you’re a lefty and you’ve lost freaking Keith Olbermann…

    1. Brother on this we can agree.

The solution to our addiction to foreign oil is solar panels and windmills?

Oil is largely used for transportation.  Are we going to see bike riders in Boulder with portable windmills?  This solves the problem?

It seems nobody in the White House has a clue about energy.

Did Salazar have this speech peer reviewed before Obama read it?

      This is nuts.

      1. of

        1)crossing corporate Oil companies

        2)of actually resolving the problem.

        3) doing more with less.

Nothing is wrong with drilling for our own Oil reserve. (and keeping it off the world market)

How about two drilled at the same time. One as the primary and the second as a relief well to shut off the first should this happen again. then again it is too late for common sense. the gulf is already Devastated for Our Lifetimes.

I too am disappointed President Obama is not far more Upset. OR that heads aren’t rolling over this disaster.

then again the right is already afraid of President Obama’s “anger”.

        1. I know it’s tough keeping up with your “Libby of the Left” reputation, but there was nothing in Obama’s speech last night that addressed any of the points you listed.

I wouldn’t say that the President lost me, but the speech last night was a disaster as far as I was concerned.  If he wasn’t going to give us specifics, he shouldn’t have asked for the air time.

At least he didn’t sit next to a fire wearing a sweater like Jimmy Carter.  But it was downhill from there.

          1. I guess I should have stated that expressly.

As I am responding now to you ralphie and at the same time the Presidents Speech.

I too thought the Speech was sub-par. Not a disaster but definitely a letdown.

I would have liked more specifics too. but then again that would have been president Obama “painting himself into a corner” (so to speak) Keeping options Open is a smart move. As The Oil Giants themselves are breaking new ground in experimenting with ways of stopping the flow. (they really have nor ever had a plan) For President Obama to promise what he can’t possibly deliver, is futile. yet most would “feel” better about a pipe dream.

Are we all really that stupid?

Me I say laws could and should be broken here in this instance. To mitigate this disaster as fast as possible. I forget just now, what country offered help with a “rock placement” pipe. that could easily fit over the well head in its entirety. pump the oil out from the top into tankers. Mitigating the amount released into the gulf. (at least until the relief well is deep enough)

But as the law is written only American ships with American crews can respond and act upon this Disaster. even though three “foreign” companies caused it.

              1. forgo campaigning and negotiate? giving of himself so that his competition can use his accomplishments for propaganda purposes?

so his competition can go on to defy congress and break the law selling weapons to our enemy’s?

yet that’s what you just said.

                1. .

If I’m understanding that post, Froward, you are a fan of James Earl ?

He’s my fave Prez of the modern era.  A man of integrity who tried to do right by God and the nation.

Maybe we’re not so diff’rent, after all.

                  .

                  1. …we might have made good on Jimmy’s promise of “Not one more drop of foreign oil….” (parphrased).  RR moved into the White House and down came the solar panels JC had installed.  That was just the start.

          2. No specifics, and yet he compared his Administration’s efforts on the spill to WWII or the moon landing.

Except the War, the objective was to defeat the Axis.

ANd the moon landing’s objective was to place a man actually on the moon.

He keeps saying he’s going to return the area to conditions than they were before, and something about Chinese windmills.

            ?!?!?!?!

            1. did you.

all those were examples of the American Spirit in overcoming diversity. Using American tenacity on never giving up. NOTHING is Impossible!

yet as we read your post here LB, Nothing is possible to republicans.

Go ahead and just give up, it is what conservatives preach.

              1. THat reply was nearly as disjointed as Obama’s speech last night.

He gave no specifics on what to do.  In WWII the specifics were that we were going to militarily defeat the Axis powers.

Last night he said he’s going to really get mad at BP and the Chinese have windmills.  Wow.

Hey, for the first time in my life, I agree with Keith Olbermann:  That was a great speech if you’ve been on another planet for the last 57 days.

Now run along to your poetry slam – I’m not going to bother with your free-associating today.

                1. yeah thats just as specific as what Obama said about the Gulf.

                  pretty general statement actually.

Nice of you to appreciate FDR like that.

comparing Obama to FDR thats really nice of you. (or absent minded)

                  1. You know that, right?

If you think that was a good speech last night, you might actually be the only one.

                    Here’s freaking Eugene Robinson:

Less than a minute into President Obama’s Oval Office address, my heart sank. For the umpteenth time since the Gulf of Mexico oil spill began, an anxious nation was informed that Energy Secretary Steven Chu has a Nobel Prize. Obama’s speech pretty much went down hill from there.

                    Ouch!

Or this – from the arch-Conservative L.A. Times:

But watching the president and hearing him was a little creepy; that early portion of the address was robotic, lacked real energy, enthusiasm. And worst of all specifics. He was virtually detail-less.

After almost two months of waiting through continuously contradictory reports, an anxious American public wanted to know, HOW are you going to accomplish all this?

Even Obama’s cheerleaders over at MSNBC were complaining. “Where was the How in this speech?” demanded Keith Olbermann. Seriously.

Maybe you should email them – you might be able to inspire them with comparisons to FDR.

                    1. However I prefer “eccentric”.

in so far as Obamas speech NO I did not think it what was needed.

I tried to express that, however LB you prove yet again that reading comprehension is not your strong suit.

                    2. This should be your sig line.  Forever.  Or at least a disclaimer before every post of yours.

then again it is too late for common sense.

Have a good day.  You’ve made mine.

              2. You did not actually pay attention

                did you.

all those were examples of the American Spirit in overcoming diversity.

I presume you meant adversity. 🙂

        2. I too am disappointed President Obama is not far more Upset.

A lot of Happy Talking, last night.

But, overall, not as bad a speech, in my opinion, as some are making it out to be.

    2. Olberman is a consummate journalist and commentator.  He calls them like he sees them.  It is called integrity.  That is why we “lefties” claim him.

        1. I notice, however, that he has taken to saying “god damm” a lot.

PS.  He used to have those stupid videos from Japan which had all kinds of  bizarre animal  set ups  .was that part of it?

            1. Total disgrace?  Son, you don’t know what a total disagree is…..how do you feel about calling Hitler “die Fuehrer?”

What about calling Obama a racist?

              1. Hitler was referred to as “Der FГјhrer” by the Nazis (and most Germans) before and during WWII.  Is that what you meant?

                Yes, Hitler was a disgrace.

I’m an R, so we’re used to being called racists for no reason, so, yes,  I think it’s dumb to do the same to Obama.

Olbermann is still a disgrace in my eyes, but he’s no Hitler.

                How’s that?

    3. Like you said in a later comment, this is like the Iran hostage crisis in that it keeps continuing. He’s not doing anything to fix it and no one believes the line about returning things to better than before.

I’m not sure what the answer is. But leaving it in BP’s hands I think is a big mistake both in terms of fixing this ASAP and politically.

  2. Obama needs to find someone who know how to talk to dumb people.  There are the majority of this country and they are clueless and scared.  I think he has never in his life encountered uneducated people and he does not know how to deal with them.

I cite, as an example, the morning drive time king of talk radio – peter “I call Hitler die fuehrer” boyles who has his audience going bananas this am because on Obama’s posted tax returns,  the SS# is deleted instead of redacted.  This is significant to the boyles audience.  Finding meaning in blank spaces is part of how boyles manipulates his fans…..there are an infinite amount of blank spaces in the universe…boyles has hardly begun….and these people, according to boyles,  vote.

As for the speech.  I really like the President, but I have two objections.

    1) The speech should have come AFTER the meeting with BP so that he could announce the plan to the nation.

    2) He needs to have weekly press conference and take questions:  The questions coming from CNN, especially Anderson Cooper, are legitimate.  Why not hazmat equipment?  Why the delays?  Why are people getting sick?

    1. He needs to learn how to talk to – okay I’ll call them average or less-than-average-intellect Americans.  It’s a huge understatement to say that it would be easier for Obama to accomplish that than to raise up the averageness of the average and less-than.  He needs to learn how to connect better on the gut level – it’s essential with the major disasters this country faces, and the insecurity that people feel about them.  And you’re right, he needs to hold press conferences so often that the news media and the rest of the country become sick of them.

      1. Aren’t you guys getting tired of pretending that when Obama says something stupid, it is the fault of the audience for not understanding. His speech sucked, because his speech sucked, not because his audience was not brilliant enought to get it.

        1. Obama did not say anything stupid, and I am faulting him for not communicating better.  But, the situation is very complicated and does not admit of easy solutions….and he just assumed that his audience understood that…..they don’t.

I love the quote about Clinton and the scuba diving….except it immediately brought to mind all kinds of fairly salacious comments about Clinton and “scuba diving”…or was it just me?

What Clinton did do was elevate FEMA to a cabinet post and put an incredible competent administrator in charge…James and damm I can’t think of this last name….but he handled floods, hurricanes and the OKC bombing extraordinary well….and he should be consulting right now.

              1. FEMA was an cabinet level department on its own.  Then, thank you Mr. Bush, Homeland Security was created (over Max Cleland’s strong objections…he felt he wouldn’t be efficient and FEMA “heva job brownie” was buried in that bureacracy….and of course, Cleland was buried in his reelection campaign….called unpatriotic and all kinds of crap because of his analysis of that monster creation…)

James Watt was an Reagan/Bush appointment to Interior….he brought along Ann Gorsuch…anyone remember all of that????

    1. Together they have 35 weekly hours of am and pm drive time which they devote to destroying Hickenlooper.  He won’t answer them and won’t go on their shows…because, he “whines” they are “not fair.”

governor maes and senator buck….the first truly talk show candiates/winners.

But say hey, dems are too refined to listen to talk radio….just sip your tea and wait for your back east buds to come to the rescue.

      1. the RGA “Stripes” ads running unanswered — even here on this web site!

The Hickenlooper people think no one’s paying attention to the governor’s race yet. It’s a big gamble.

        1. …now, he got lucky with his “scooter” ad – everyone was snowed in under the March Snowstorm, and he had bought a bunch of TV. But starting with that ad, and all the others that followed, Hick built a brand of the slightly goofy, common-sense biznizman that got it where regular politicians didn’t.

He probably tipped the scales on Ref C with the goofy parachute ad, but again, he appeared in an ad when it made a difference.

Even if he decided to do a funny goofy ad to refute this Stripes spot, so what? It’s way to early for it to stick, because it’s sooooo stupid. Instead, Hick comes out with his super-charming spots EN MASSE in September, and no one will ever remember this spot.

          1. And it could be a great strategy. But it’s not just talk radio that’s driving down Hick’s numbers. Whether that matters or not at this point.

      2. Norton is the one with the more extreme positions, but Buck will beat her by 20% because he is a better candidate.

Talk shows, like money, have an influence, but are not the only influence.

Voters tend to like candidates that are genuine and not to like people that are pandering to them.  I think that factor is a bigger influence.

        1. Caplis is committed to Norton….I don’t know about the rest of the lineup….both maes and buck came roaring out of nowhere concurrent with the attention from boyles.

          1. I didn’t know about Boyles but I have heard Norton call in to Caplis when she wanted to get some millage out of her cronies sending in a complaint to the FEC.

      3. Boyles, Caplis and Silverman do not attract a wide enough audience of independent voters to drive public opinion.

The rise in Hick’s negatives are troubling.

        1. And to what, pray tell, do you attribute the rise in Hick’s negatives?

And WTF do you get the estimate on the number of listeners and the percentage of independent voters?

And are you really Dick Wadhams?

      4. .

        Here’s the ad:

3 AM phone call:  Ring.  Ring.

Bleary-eyed housewife in curlers:  Hello ?  Hello ?

Collection Agency:   Mrs. Smith ?  Is this Mrs. Elvira Smith ?   Please answer.  Is this Mrs. Elvira Smith of 123 Main Street ?

Housewife:  Yes, this is … what time is it ? Why are you calling me at 3 O’clock in the morning ?

Solicitor:  Mrs. Smith, our records show that you owe 12 cents to the Ajax Collection Agency.  Would you like to settle this debt at this time ?   Have you got your credit card handy ?

Housewife:  I don’t owe you 12 cents, and even if I did, why are you calling me at 3 O’clock in the morning ?

Solicitor:  Ma’am, now don’t try to shirk this legitimate debt.  We got our information from DAN MAES, who is in the business of providing data for telephone debt collectors.  Nearly all debt collectors in the State of Colorado make their harassing phone calls based on data that comes from DAN MAES’ company.  If you don’t like credit card companies, or debt collectors, or banksters, then why would you ever vote for him ?

        Fade.

      1. I see a lot of criticism of Rasmussen, and I do understand the issue with it being a robopoll.  PPP is starting to be viewed as the Rasmussen of the democratic party.  Dailykos recently dropped them because of problems with bad polling as well.

        So what is more fair?

          1. I think that’s what they call it.  They link to nearly any poll on those links, including internals that campaigns release.  If you read the diary, it links to a number of different polling agencies, also including Rasmussen.  That’s very different than the polls that Kos pays for.

As far as Kos dropping PPP, I’ll take a look later if I get a chance, but I’m not sure if they actually posted about it.  The info came from some bloggers I know who spend a lot more time on Kos than I do and are closer to inside KOS info.

          2. R2K was Kos’s regular pollster.  538 did a review of polling outfits and R2K came out a bit sub-par on it’s “introduced error”.  Kos is in the market for another polling outfit.

However, before conservatives start pumping up Rasmussen based on this, 538’s analysis only tracks polls within 21 days of a general election, which leaves many of Rasmussen’s widely ridiculed numbers out of the ratings.  (538 has done a few pieces on that, too, and indicates Rasmussen has some serious polling flaws that fall outside of “house bias” effects; Ras has also been avoiding polls close to elections recently – they’ve been polling 1 month out but not the week before elections.)

PPP, BTW, turns out to be more accurate than Rasmussen.

        1. I’ll tell you the polling I don’t trust. I don’t trust Rasmussen polling, I don’t trust anything that is overtly partisan, and has been proven to have a massive Republican-leaning house effect by Nate Silver.

I like PPP, I like Research 2000 (which is Kos’s pollster) I like a lot of other national pollsters. The problem is that not very many others besides PPP and Rasmussen have polled this race. If that’s the entire data set, then that’s all we have to go on as far as polling.

  3. Every once in a while, boyles calls Hitler “die Fuhrer” I think that is disagreeful.  I am trying to show you what I think disgraces are….

Calling Obama  not an American citizen; calling him a socialist, communist, saying he is a traitor or not putting America first or not sharing  “our values”..  These are the things I call disgraceful.

With the exception you cited about Milkin,  I don’t know what you find disgraceful about Olberman.  You can certainly disagree with him.  That is all fair in war..etc….but disgraceful?

    1. It sounds like Boyles is calling Obama “die Fuhrer,” which would be disgraceful.  But calling Hitler “die Fuhrer,” which is what you wrote here and before, seems OK.

        1. Der Fuhrer is what the Germans called Hitler.

          (not die Fuhrer.)

Use of the term to refer to Cpl. Schickelgruber is not, therefore, evocative of anything other than a historical reference.

“Millions blindly followed Der Fuhrer into war and genocide.”

            True enough.

If you refer to Obama as die fuerer, as PERA Hopeful said, that’s disgraceful.  But as to refering to hitler by that title, I’d have to see the full quote to say if there is anything disturbing about it.

It’s the same thing as saying “Jesus Christ.”

I personally use the term “Jesus of Nazareth” because while I believe there was such a historical figure, I don’t believe he was “The Christ,” which is a title referring to the Messiah of Jewish prophecy.

But millions of non-Christians would use the term “Jesus Christ”, often in a profane or blasphmous context, without intending to evoke the image of him as a Messiah.  Most of these casual users, obviously, wouldn’t even know that that is what the term “Christ” means.

  4. and hire the staffs and volunteers of The Alliance for Justice, Efficient Economy, The Center for a Livable Future, Clean Water Network, Conservation International, CREST, Defenders of Wildlife, Earth First!, Earth Island Institute.

    Why not?

We need a housecleaning of the first order of magnitude.

  5. Both are running reports highly critical of the lack of training and hazmat equipment being given to the workers cleaning the oil.  Olberman and Maddow are placing the blame at the foot of the administration.  I think the concern is real and I will be contacting my congress people to ask for action to protect those workers.

I think this is what good journalism is about.
