The Greeley Tribune has the article:
Ken Buck brings on state GOP leader as campaign manager
Kay Rendleman, former chairwoman of the El Paso County Republican Party, has been appointed campaign manager for U.S. Senate candidate Ken Buck’s campaign.
After serving as a staffer on Ronald Reagan’s first presidential campaign, Rendleman has been a leader in state and federal campaigns for the past 30 years…
“I will do all I can to help Ken take back the seat now held by the appointed Sen. Michael Bennet,” she said.
Walt Klein had performed many of these functions since he has been hired as a consultant.
There is some more information on Rendleman from the Colorado Springs Independent:
Rendleman started her political career as one of four paid staff members for the Reagan for President primary campaign in California in 1980. She also worked as a field staff member for Reagan’s general election campaign overseeing 11 California counties. She worked as the statewide volunteer coordinator for a U.S. Senate campaign and helped with Bob Dole’s presidential bid. Her background also includes work on two proposition campaigns as a paid staffer and on several state assembly races in California. She coordinated Ken Lambert’s state legislative campaign here.
Rendleman moved to Colorado in 2002 and served as the volunteer coordinator for the 2002 cycle. “I got right to work,” she says.
She said a friend asked if she would be interested in working on Buck’s campaign. After she expressed interest, Buck called her. “I’ve seen him many times coming through here and have been very impressed with Ken.”

Now figure Buck has a really good shot and they are lining up to support him?
Norton isn’t what they thought she’d be.
Norton’s initial appeal was she came recommended by important people, she could raise money, she had statewide recognition, they thought she would win anyway, so what the heck why not endorse her now.
The caucus showed her making it through the primary was not inevitable.
Everything she has done since has caused them to rethink their initial assessment.
At least some of them must be thinking if she gets nominated she will be an embarrassment.
You may not agree with Buck on all his policy choices, but they are thought through and he is intelligent.
Well I don’t know that Rendleman is your typical moderate establishment person, but its good to see some people with campaign experience coming on board Ken Buck’s campaign.
This is a best-case scenario. Norton is a certified gaffe machine and has spent most of her money. Buck keeps on plugging away and is gaining speed.
Lets say Norton kills Buck in fundraising and wins the primary. Come August, I could put together a gaffe montage that, if aired, would sink her candidacy.
Or Ken Buck somehow wins the primary. IF CIR passes, Buck would be wise to fear the Latino vote. Bennet will still be crushing everybody in fundraising, but now the DSCC will be pouring money in.
How are either going to be on TV during the primaries with so little CoH?
Do you think the DSCC is the only entity that is going to be putting money into the race?
Your incumbent has never gotten over 42% in the polls. Generally incumbents polling at less than 50% are in trouble.
You may not have noticed but not everybody thinks his good friend Barack is doing such a swell job. Bennet voted for the cornhusker kickback and a few other things that are considered by a lot of people as somewhat over the top.
Let’s check back in 6 months about your best-case scenario.
As will corporations, with Citizens United paving the way.
Whoever ends up being the Republican nominee, they won’t have to worry about 3rd party interests “helping” them. Unfortunately (for them) the 527s can say pretty much whatever they want, and that’s backfired on both Republicans and Democrats.
In 2008, Bob Schaffer got some “support” from the US Chamber trying to paint Mark Udall as a Boulder Liberal Peacenick complete with a silly hippie that came out from a smoke-filled VW bus. It certainly didn’t hurt Udall, and it did no favors for Shcaffer’s already miserable campaign.
On the Dem side, In the 2006 CD-4 election, there were the “pink lady” ads where Marilyn Musgrave was depicted as robbing the wallets of soldiers on the battlefield.
And I think Buck will be a formidable campaigner. I’m hoping Norton pulls it out in the primary – she’ll be a lot easier to beat.
The Dem strategy for winning in November is immigration and the Latino vote? I’ll take that any day – polls show people overwhelmingly support the AZ law, i.e. the current federal law. They want it enforced.
This is a great pickup for Ken Buck
I’ve gotten to know Kay Rendleman very well – we announced our State Treasury campaign at the GOP HQ in El Paso, in addition to the many events we’ve attended in El Paso County – Kay has done a terrific job there – not only does she command the respect of the GOP, more importantly, she is a very good organizer and manager
Again, this is a great pickup for Buck and exactly what their campaign needs at this time
Kay has muddled her way through being chair in EPC and has barely survived. She is leaving two weeks before state assembly and the supporters she used to have are running the other way. Bad move for her and bad move for Buck. She is toxic and has little to no ability to raise money or manage people. At best she is an administrative type person – definitely not a “high-speed” campaign leader.

Who is he to talk? Everyone knows Chuck Broerman is working for Jane Norton.

But the paper should have pointed out he’s working for Buck’s opponent.
I would disagree — Rendleman has done a superb job. She ran a nearly flawless county assembly, the caucuses and division meetings produced accurate lists for the higher assembly, and she managed to pull of a Lincoln Day dinner that made money in the middle of preparing for the County Assembly. She may not have deep pockets, but the party has re-energized volunteers. This is a good opportunity for her — to go from an unpaid, thankless position as county chairman to managing a statewide campaign full-time is a big leap. Her experience in advertising and marketing will help Buck.
The El Paso County Republicans will be in very good hands with Vice Chair (now Chair) Daryl Glenn – that’s why we elect Vice Chairs
As a candidate, I’m not worried – I wish Kay could stay back, but this is a great opportunity for her
The article says Ryan Parsell will be interim Chair
I’ve hung out with Ryan quite a bit and he’s terrific – he put in a ton of time training Precinct and District Captains in prep for caucus night, which went great in El Paso County
Everything’s going to work out fine
I would point out that Kay had very little to do with the Caucus or the Assembly. Other than to run the meeting the entire organization was done by others.
That is – I disagree with All Things Sacred’s comments. At the end of the day, Chuck’s comments are brilliant because he comes off as sounding neutral. The average person does not necessarily know he is running Norton’s campaign.
So Cool!
The El Paso Gazette reports that Norton cut her campaign staff. So Norton is cutting her staff while Buck is adding to his campaign staff. If you are losing the battle, do you cut your staff or do you want additional resources. Of course her having to spend money petitioning on the ballot has to be expensive. Perhaps her fund raising has taken a hit since she withdrew from the assembly.
…the NRSC was none-too happy. This was a dictate from above (Charlie Black) – they canned the $14k a month ‘professional’ campaign manger and are going ‘free-agent’ (ala Josh).
As more financial backers jump ship, look for the fundraising arm of the Norton campaign to become a leaner and, ultimately, more accountable group of girls. My guess is that 10% incentive will also go by the wayside…
And yes – the superfluous campaign roles will continue to be eliminated.
But the biggest thing to remember is this: her petitioning-on will take, at least, $100k. And that’s just for the signatures. Add in her stupid media buys from Q1, her over-the-top collateral purchases, and her consultant-heavy payroll – then it becomes clear: She doesn’t know how to spend money.
I want a Senator who actually can figure out what we should, and should not, spend our money on.
It was some fairly stinging criticism.
This is a terrific move from the Buck campaign. Once again – that guy continues to impress me with the team he surrounds himself with. Conservatives working for a Conservative. And real people – not government hacks and political appointees looking for their next gravy train. Well done, Ken. Well well done.
