Andrew, you lost me when:

Mr. Speaker,

We met early last fall when you had joined the race for Senator.  We had the chance to speak one on one about the issues you felt were important to Colorado.  I was new to the party and didn’t know your background.  I did my research and was impressed.  You seemed like someone with a strong message and the history of action to back it up.

I cringed a little when I heard you speak at an organizing meeting in my county.  You spent much of your short speech mocking our Senator and how he got there.  I was there to hear about you, what you wanted to do, by focusing on your opponent, it made me curious, about your opponent.

Then I started getting your emails, you seemed to take on a very bitter tone.  It’s not fair, he is taking PAC money.  Frankly, it was very transparent that the decision was made to not take PAC money because your opponent was much better at getting it than you.  Trying to demonize the issue, especially with your past, was kind of pathetic.

Then there was the forum missed even though he had said he couldn’t go to, again, snarkiness.

Then the young democrats, a chance to show us who you are and what you are about.  A chance once again overshadowed by your negative message and sarcasm.

It wasn’t fair that the Senator was raising so much money, it wasn’t fair that the president backed him.  Again, if the president backed you I don’t feel that you would be taking such a strong stand.

The video you sent out with three industry guys was when you really went over the top. Seriously??

Now the Baca et al letter.  I am one of those new democrats, recruited during the Obama campaign.  She may be a fine woman and has done a lot for the state and party.  I don’t know her, so the email to me is just another whiny cry for help.

What I want from a candidate?  Tell me about you, tell me about your passions, your plans, your track record.  Mr. Speaker, you have all that, but somewhere along the way someone took a hold of your campaign and decided snark, and sarcasm, and bitterness was the way to go.

While this took place over the past 4-5 months, a leader evolved in the Senate.  Someone who was willing to stand on the floor and denouce the deal making even if the pols brushed it off as naivety.  Thats the kind of poulism I can get behind.  He hasn’t stopped there with his speech and proposals yesterday focusing on what is broken and offering solutions.  Then he championed the public option and is fighting to make it a reality.

I think the primary has changed our Senator, frankly only seperating him more and more from you and your campaign.  For that, thank you for running.  At every corner, one candidate has taken the high road, and one has not.

That said, thanks to your horribly run campaign, I will be caucusing for the first time in my life, for the senator.

It didn’t have to be this way.

  1. … what many of us have felt, particularly those of us who have supported Andrew Romanoff quite strongly in the past.

As I have made clear, I am a Bennet supporter and have been for some time. What I didn’t expect is that Andrew Romanoff could behave in a way that would make me never want to support him again, for anything, ever. The longer his campaign has gone on and the snarkier and more disingenuous he has become, the more I have come to the view that he is not the person I used to support or could support again.

    1. and for writing your first diary. If, it turns out that Andrew Romanoff becomes the Primary victor, I hope you will at least consider supporting him against the Republicans.

As for you botw – you prove what’ wrong with Bennet’s supporters.

I am a Bennet supporter and have been for some time. What I didn’t expect is that Andrew Romanoff could behave in a way that would make me never want to support him again, for anything, ever.

so if Romanoff wins the primary, you will be supporting Norton this fall either directly by voting for her, or indirectly by not voting at all.

      thanks for supporting the party

          1. And I’ve always emphasized that we should all argue our positions, support our preferred candidate, but stop trying to villify both the opposing candidate and his supporters.

When you are busy “proving what’s wrong with Bennet’s supporters,” you are not only unfairly insulting me (and many others like me), but you are also contributing to the problem rather than to the solution.

I haven’t seen you emphasizing the need to show party solidarity and respect for both of our candidates, except when you perceive an opportunity to use it as a club with which to beat up your opposition within the party. That’s just a wee bit hypocritical and dysfunctional, don’t you think?

            1. of party solidarity – but i have never made the statement that I would ‘never vote for Bennet’

it seems you are calling me out for calling out someone else for not supporting party solidarity.

the point here is, botw makes such a broad sweeping statement against Romanoff that does not support party solidarity.

(and there have been many times on this site when i have been called out by Bennet supporters here, with the phrase ‘that’s whats wrong with Romanoff supporters’)

              1. You made a statement about “the problem with Bennet supporters” in service to an argument in favor of party solidarity. Don’t reply to me, just ponder that for awhile. And while you’re at it, ponder whether the defense “but they started it!” is really the high road after all. Okay?

                1. i should have made the statement more botw specific, such as ‘i doubt your statement would be agreed with by the majority of Bennet supporters’

i suppose i will just wait to see if botw stands by that sentiment.

                  1. I never said I would vote for Jane Norton.

What I said was that “I am a Bennet supporter and have been for some time. What I didn’t expect is that Andrew Romanoff could behave in a way that would make me never want to support him again, for anything, ever.”

Read that very carefully, please.  I guarantee you I am not the only Democrat who feels that way.  It doesn’t mean we are all voting Republican, nor does it sayu that in any message I have ever written, including the one you mangle above.

            2. the editors of this website have lumped all Romanoff supporters into a group many times

Romanoff supporters have been trying to downplay the Miles comparison

from last thursday feb 25 on a frontpage post by the site

              http://coloradopols.com/diary/

not surprisingly, the editors do not provide any source for who the “Romanoff supporters” are or how they are “trying” to do anything.

I would list the numerous times other bloggers here have done the same, but considering this website is engaging in the very tactic that you take offense with in my post, I would consider you most offended by Colorado Pols.

              1. and do think that they have piled on Romanoff too much, and have criticized and rebuked Bennet supporters as well as Romanoff supporters, I personally have found the Romanoff camp to be more shrill and more untempered than the Bennet camp on this site. You can disagree, as I’m sure you do. And it’s really beside the point anyway. This shouldn’t be a race to the bottom. I know that I haven’t made it one. I’m suggesting that you don’t either.

                1. and, if I could believe that this site was neutral in the race, and that this site was not biased, I am sure that the ‘vitriol’ by Romanoff fans here would be greatly reduced.

Think about this: this site had the chances of Romanoff winning at 20-1 citing his lack of campaign staff, message, or endorsements.

2 months later, Romanoff hired former Obama staffers (1 from Iowa 08 no less), showed distinctions on issues (such as cramdown and PAC money), and got the endorsement of 2 of the largest unions in the state and a majority of the state’s elected legislators.

And this site’s new projections for winning

                  remained at 20-1.

There is no pleasing this site, until the primary has been won.

sadly, the site’s credibility with the democratic base will have been long lost.

                  1. Wade, who are you talking about? Romjue worked for Biden in Iowa ’08, not Obama. If there’s someone else who was in Iowa for Obama (thousands were!), then OK, but it wasn’t one of the major hires.

                    1. awhile back, but here is a refresher:

U.S. Senate hopeful Andrew Romanoff may so far have led a quiet campaign, but behind the scenes he’s getting some high-powered help from a Washington, D.C.-based consulting firm that includes some top Obama campaign field directors.

New Partners specializes in grassroots outreach and is informally helping Romanoff get his campaign off the ground, said the former state House speaker, declining to give more detail.

Among the high-profile partners are Dave Hamrick, a former field strategist for then-presidential candidate Barack Obama in the battleground states of Michigan and Pennsylvania, and Paul Tewes, renowned for his primary work for Obama in Iowa.

                      Read more: http://www.denverpost.com/ci_1

                    2. Forgive me for not remembering something you posted MORE THAN THREE MONTHS AGO about some consultants the Romanoff campaign engaged. I thought when you said he hired former Obama staffers you meant, you know, hired them, not signed up with their company. But thanks for digging that up.

              2. I’m sorry, Wade, but that’s bullshit. I talk to Romanoff supporters every day (Bennet supporters too), and it’s not hard to make some generalizations, like that one. The source is, that’s what people are saying, and they’re not shy about it. I would imagine “the editors” are also talking with people constantly and can draw some conclusions about what they hear.

        1. Like many other Bennet suppporters, I have been clear that I will support the D nominee.

botw may “…prove what’ wrong with Bennet’s supporters.”  but not that staying home in Nov if our guy is not the nominee is what’s wrong with us.  That claim has come up, I just don’t recall seeing any of the Bennet supporters making it.  Not that I’m speaking for botw.

      1. It has been really interesting getting involved and becoming active in both the party and this race.  As I’ve mentioned in one of my few previous comments, it’s been amazing to me how accessable our candidates are and how easy it is to get involved.  Less than 9 months into the party and I’m a committee person for my precinct and really looking forward to seeing the process for the first time.

What’s sad is that you had to ask the question about supporting the Speaker if he were to win the primary.  Would I vote for him?  Without a second thought.  Would I host a house party for him or donate like I have for the Senator, probably not.

  2. You are the one we’ve been waiting for.

My story is similar in terms of getting involved for the Obama campaign and sticking around.

I don’t see the Speaker’s campaign stuff the same.  Obviously, I wasn’t there when you and he met one on one. And I was probably at a different event than your county meeting. I did see the DYD debate.

But I see all the less than excellent stuff as “campaignery” and I don’t take it seriously. If this is as bad as it gets, it doesn’t seem that bad.

I support Senator Bennet, and I want the seat to stay D so I’ll support the D nominee whomever it is (assuming this is as bad as it gets).
