A new poll from Keating Research of Colorado voters shows about what you’d expect the January after a wave Democratic election with nothing in the interim to boost Republican fortunes–continued low favorability for both President Donald Trump and Colorado’s highest-ranking Republican Sen. Cory Gardner, and little appetite for the Republican agenda generally:

Colorado voters remain unimpressed with Donald Trump, with majorities blaming him for the government shutdown and opposing plans to spend $5.6 billion for a wall on the southern border with Mexico, according to results of the latest Keating Research-OnSight Public Affairs poll released today.

In a survey of 500 active Colorado voters, Trump was viewed unfavorably by 60% of respondents. Trump’s low favorability with Colorado voters — 39 percent — is identical to that of Republican U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner. Both Trump and Gardner are up for re-election in 2020.

Both Trump and Gardner clock in a favorability that spells big problems for either of them here in 2020. In Trump’s case, locked-in unfavorability is much higher than Gardner’s 43%, but still underwater–and with Trump likely at the top of the ticket with Gardner in 2020, it’s collateral damage Gardner is likely to suffer. 58% of respondents oppose the construction of Trump’s wall, and 53% blame Trump for the recently-ended shutdown.

“Having seen Republicans in Colorado washed away at all levels by the midterm blue wave, Senator Gardner has been frantically trying to move to the middle. But it’s likely too little too late given the advantages Democrats will have in Colorado in a presidential election year and the Trump anchor around his legs,” said Curtis Hubbard of OnSight Public Affairs.

    There are parallels between Coffman and Gardner. Neither was a good fit for the demographics of his district/state which changed since he was first elected. Each tried in a clumsy and pathetic way to put some distance between himself and Trump. Coffman at one point said he was open to impeachment. Gardner voted for the Democratic bill to end the shutdown.
    
    Maybe Roger Edwards will run in a primary against Gardner next year….

Senator Bennet and Rep. Neguse have introduced a new wilderness bill in D.C. If Gardner signs on, with sincerity, he has a good chance of getting my vote next year if he runs.

According to Politico today …

LWCF LIKELY NEXT WEEK: The broad public lands package S. 47 (116) that includes a permanent reauthorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund is expected to see floor time next week, according Senate Energy Chairman Lisa Murkowski.

Gardner is already bragging he got "expedited consideration" on the bill. Given this is "a bipartisan package of more than 100 public lands, natural resources, and water bills," is it really bipartisan or are there poison pills snuck into the mix?

Gardner lost my confidence within the first few months of 2017. It would take some extreme measures from Gardner to get me to even consider him in 2020. Perhaps if he would lead republicans in the senate to convict the traitor Trump after he's impeached.

  Interesting supposition.
  
  Cory is, above all else, a coward. He will not lead at anything.
  
  In order to be a leader you must have the "courage of your convictions", as I believe the expression goes. And, you must be able to make difficult decisions and be willing to stand behind them…to be accountable.
  
  Stop me when this starts to sound like Cory Gardner…
  
  Our junior senator has two priorities…covering his ass and keeping the money flowing. Period.
