Bunny Boilers and Primary Challengers: Gardner's Shutdown Statement Angers GOP Base

Colorado’s conservative activists are furious at U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner’s call to end the government shutdown without funding for President Trump’s wall. County GOP officials and Tea Party leaders are talking openly about the need for a primary challenger in 2020.

One official went so far as to joke about boiling a bunny on Sen. Gardner’s stove.

Jefferson County Republican Vice Chair Steve Dorman vehemently disagreed with a post written by a member of the Arapahoe Tea Party group that stated. “Sorry, we need to accept Cory Gardner.”

Dorman replied “this betrayal is too huge. I don’t care about 99.9% of the time. And yes….the wall and border security are very important.”

In another comment, the JeffCo GOP Vice Chair added “I don’t want him to come home and find a rabbit’s head boiling on his stove….but…….”

Though presumably tongue-in-cheek, this quip is particularly dubious in light of a threatening video of a beheading Gardner’s wife received via text message back in October.

Pueblo County Republican Party Treasurer George Mayfield posted his call for a primary on the group’s Facebook page,

Our RINO U.S. Senator Cory Gardner just announced that he would vote to re-open the complete federal government, with no money for a wall. I think it’s time that he gets ready for a primary in 2020. He won’t win in blue Colorado by trolling for Democrat votes.

On Friday, Anil Mathai, chair of the Adams County Republicans, agreed with radio host Peter BoyleS that Sen. Gardner is a “useful idiot,” or easily manipulated pawn, presumably of establishment conservatives.

Mathai also accused Gardner of acting out of a need for money and power:

“most of the Republican Party is run by ego, which wants power, which eventually wants money and that’s why you have a U.S. Senator [Gardner] telling the rest of the Republicans to submit to the Democrats’ budget.” – Adams County Republican Chair Anil Mathai

House Minority Leader Patrick Neville also disagrees with Gardner. Informed by radio host Chuck Bonniwell on Friday of Gardner’s willingness to forego funds for Trump’s wall prior to reopening the government, Neville replied “Did he say that? Oh that is disappointing.”  He then mocked opposition to the shutdown by musing about its apparent insignificance:

“I don’t know about you, but the world sure has just come to a total stop since shutdown happened. Right? People are dying in the streets.”

Gardner fared no better on the Western Slope, where the Mesa County Patriots also declared his shutdown statement to be “all the proof needed to ‘primary’ Gardner.”

Despite voting with President Trump over 90% of the time, Senator Gardner has always had a tenuous relationship with his base. Gardner’s reluctance to take public positions or address controversial issues routinely frustrates the far-right, particularly hardcore Trump supporters and members of anti-immigrant groups.

    1. Too me it does not make Cory look good so much as to remind me that Trump is not the problem. This is a grassroots up problem of ordinary voters who are wiling to flip the board over if they don't win.

      It’s why Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr, performed embarrassingly  contorted theological gymnastics, in order to align with this President over poor people.
      It’s why Donald Trump spent Christmas Eve bunkered down in the White House behind a smart phone, tweeting scattered, rapid-fire nonsense—instead of being with his family or reading or God forbid, serving someone.

      It is the white-hot fear that has overtaken them all.

       

      1. That's a good article, Michael. I'd disagree with one part; the make-up of the migrant caravans. Before it ceased publication, the conservative, anti-Trump, magazine, Weekly Standard, ran a good article on the caravans done by an embedded reporter who joined in long before the caravans got to Tijuana. Women and children were a minority in the caravans according to the author, who seemed credible. They were mostly unemployed young men from late teens through late 20s. In other words, economic refugees.

          Who are looking to mow lawns for landscaping companies. Which tend to lawns, trees and shrubs for upscale Chamber of Commerce-type Republicans in Cherry Hills Village and Highland Ranch.

          Or who are looking to hammer nails and cut wood for contractors. Who work on finishing basements for xenophobic Republican Congressmen.

           

          1. R & R: I'd rather give that sort of work to Native Americans. What's the unemployment rate these days up on Pine Ridge? 60%? 70%?

            What's the unemployment rate for the Dine Nation? About the same? What about employment for homeless veterans?

            As a semi-interesting aside, I put a new floor in my family room back in September. Pulled up the original carpet from 1971. The two guys who did the job had green cards and were in USA from the Czech Republic. 

    1. Count Dracula is going to climb out of his box and give elected office another run?  But isn't he too RINO-ish for the True Believers?  Better to run Tim Neville, Vickie Marble or Dr. Chaps in a primary against Gardner.

        1. You are assuming, of course, that Gardner won a primary with one of those loons as his opponent. Not guaranteed. Think Mike Castle in Delaware in 2010. Or Richard Lugar in Indiana in 2012.

          And even then, he would have to move to the right to compete with that freak. Think Martha McSally last summer.

          1. He would probably try to appeal to the unaffiliated voters to come over to the GOP primary and leap over the shrinking GOP base voters, who would for the most part come slinking back in the general and support him anyway.

            1. If Gardner was to decide not to run, I'd love to see Victor Mitchell as the nominee. Polis would have had a harder time winning the governor's race if Mitchell had been his opponent instead of Stapleton.
