SD34, HD4, HD5 about to enter the Vacancy Tornado

( – promoted by Colorado Pols)

Denver Citycouncilman Rick Garcia has been appointed to be the Regional Director of HUD.

This is going to lead to a very hectic special election and vacancy committee schedule over the next 3 months.

See my diary on DenverPols for details.

  1. Jerry Frangas or Kirk Scheitler will likely run for the City Council. Either will win the Garcia seat if they choose to run.  A Frangas win would create a vacancy likely to be filled by Jennifer Coken.

    1. I am not sure who would be stronger for the Council seat, Frangas or Sandoval.

But I think Jennifer will be at a disadvantage in a vacancy. Dan Pabon seems to be more in favor with the Precinct Committee People who make up the lion’s share of the vacancy committee.

Of course I am looking at the race from an outside view since I dont live in that part of town. But that is the sense I have gotten from folkks up there.

    2. Jerry won’t run if Paula does.

If she doesn’t and he does run, he will likely win.

Under any circumstance his seat will be vacant as a result of his election to City Council or appointment to the Senate.  There is a chance that Guzman could get the Senate appointment but I think the vacancy committee is probably with Jerry.

Coken will not get the House seat under any circumstance.  Dan Pabon is out-working her.

      1. Paula Sandoval gives up her Senate Seat to be appointed to the City Council seat vacated by Garcia, and Guzman is appointed to the Senate.

IMHO, this is a real test of “old North Denver vs. new HIghlands.” EXCEPT, Frangas and Schleiter represent the new generation of one of the factions of the old North Denver…

Who goes where will tell much about the changing dynamics in one of most political few square miles in the country.

          1. at this point- does Don Mares decide to run for Council instead of mayor.

As I have noted elsewhere, he clearly was looking at the council seat before Ritter made his move.  I do know that Mares has made support calls for mayor, but not sure at the end of the day what he might do.

I am not certain he could beat Sandoval for the council seat, but I am guessing that is an easier race for him that what will be a very crowded mayoral race.

            1. However, another thank you to Roger D.  Don Mares is one of the quiet, decent, competent dems who keeps waiting his turn, while push in front of the line.

            2. Sandoval could, conceivably, run for council while retaining her Senate seat, but it’s highly unlikely. First, she’s termed out so she’s leaving anyway — leaving early gives a leg up to her successor, and she probably thinks she can have greater personal impact on the vacancy committee than on the Democratic primary. Second, her fundraising for the special election would be severely limited if she kept her seat during the campaign.

  2. Denver is instantly a better town because Garcia is one slimy dude!  Thank god he is out of elected politics!  He just couldn’t wait for DeGette to retire so he had to move on before his sliminess caught up with him and the voters started to smell the rot!  He will be back as a lobbyist in 2-3 years guaranteed!  He could give a pooh about “representing” anyone but himself!

The only people worse are the Sandovals!

Time to push that entire northwest Denver cabal out of politics for good!

They ONLY use it for THEIR benefit!

    1. It is only a regional director position. Confirming someone so low down the totem pole would seem to me to be a waste of time for the Senate. (They are good at wasting time without additional help!)
