More Crowmentum

Democrat Jason Crow and family

The campaign for Democrat Jason Crow announced new fundraising numbers that are positively ridiculous. According to a press release:

Former Army Ranger and first-time candidate Jason Crow today announced that he will report a $2.23 million fundraising total for the third quarter this year, smashing any previous quarterly fundraising record in Colorado’s 6th Congressional District – all while refusing any donations from corporate PACs.

Crow has raised nearly $4.5 million so far this cycle, and will report nearly $1.2 million in cash on hand at the end of September. Ninety-two percent of those funds came from individual donors.

Crow raised $2.23 million IN THE THIRD QUARTER of 2018.

To put that into context, Republican Rep. Mike Coffman raised $2.3 million in the 18 months between January 2017 and July 2018.

This is another reason why it looks more and more like Coffman may have reached the end of the political line.

  1. In 2016, there were a total of 376,417 votes in the CO-06.  So, Crow's take of $4.5 million so far allows $11.95 per voter — and that was in the higher turnout of a Presidential year.  Estimate of total population in the district was just over 800,000 — which would allow him to spend $5.53 per person.

If money is speech, we sure seem to have a bunch of political speech this year.

    1. When they give you lemons, make lemonade…..

I love it when Democrats outraise Republicans in fund-raising. They may want to rethink their Citizens United decision at some point. They cannot suck off the teat of the Koch forever.

      1. I guess one tired talking point deserves another. Clinton (and supporting groups) spent $1.2B and won the popular vote. Trump (and supporting groups that reported) spent $650M and won the Electoral College Vote.

On a more substantive level, we don't know how much was spent on Trump's campaign. Thus far, Russian efforts have not been accounted for.  As of now, Manafort's work was considered "volunteer" work.

And finally, there is an "in-kind" element to this campaign. As Washington Post put it:

Trump benefited immensely from “earned media” — the free TV time he got by virtue of being an unconventional candidate who frequently said outlandish and offensive things. Trump received about $5 billion in free media, according to an estimate by media analysis firm MediaQuant, compared with only $3.24 billion for Clinton.
