Pols Meet-Up Time

  • by: redstateblues

UPDATE: The general consensus in this post is that we should do it in Denver–either downtown or near the capitol. I’m going to go ahead and make the executive decision to have it at Wynkoop Brewery, which is located on 18th and Wynkoop (link takes you to Google Maps) in beautiful Lower Downtown Denver.

Also, it’s been suggested that we do this during the MLK holiday weekend, which is the weekend of the 16th and 17th. I’m going to go ahead and say Sunday, January 17th at 3:00 PM. If anyone who said they could make it has a problem with that date and time, let it be known in the comments or forever hold your peace. Original post follows…

We now take this break from our regularly scheduled Governor candidate rumor-mill to bring you this important announcement.

It’s been way too long since we did one of these things, and since the last one was in Boulder for all the granola-chomping hippies, this one should be in the metro area.

Anyone have any thoughts on when and where we should do this thing? Share it in the comments.

    1. is a date or location consensifying?

I vote for “downtown” Denver – LoDo, NoDo or 5-points.

Second choice w/be the political triangle- 6th & Speer: Capitol (Benny’s, Gov Squar, Racines, etc)

        1. I think the legislative session starts on the 13th, and I know that will cause some people’s schedules to be overwhelmed so they won’t be able to make it. But since the MLK holiday is that weekend, we might be able to get a few more people.

I’m going to count up the votes, but at this point it’s looking like it will be at Wynkoop (which will be the easiest for everyone to get to.)

But at some point this year, there is going to have to be a non-Metro meet-up.

          1. Given the uncertainty of the weather, keeping it on well-plowed roads is a good plan.

Love to try something in Estes Park or G or C Springs in the summer when we wouldn’t have to fight the potential for blizzard conditions.

    1. Why don’t people just make their opinions known. South Metro would be fine with me as that’s where I live!  🙂

I think it would be better to get the timing down, and then the place. Would next weekend work for you, Phoenix?

  1. is my favorite place in Denver (not that I know all that many). I’m happy to do it, but it has to be accessible via bus from downtown. The only time I can’t do it is the weekend of the 23rd.

      1. Take the light rail. Or, as he not-so-lovingly refers to them, the trolley car system.

Does this mean you’re coming Voyageur? That makes me happy.

      2. So going to downtown Denver is already an hour-long bus ride (which is fine), and pretty much anything beyond that is substantially longer (which is less so).

      1. Wow. To me, that might as well be downtown.

I think that if it’s going to be downtown, it’s going to be at Wynkoop.

Right now it’s looking like it’s between downtown Denver and Highlands Ranch/Littleton area.

  2. you might get some of us outliers, hinterlanders, Western Slopers, South Slopers, and other riff raff.  Just publicize it well, once it’s decided.

    1. And I know I’m not alone.

If we can get enough hinterlanders to confirm they’d be willing to make the trip, then I would be all for setting a date later than next week.

And if a bunch of WestSlope/Southies/Mountain folk come, then that would guarantee a non-Metro meet-up next time. If they can make it here, I would love to come out there.

        1. Just selfish little me.  🙂

I was really just trying to gauge where people wanted to have it with this thread. It’s totally up to the people who want to attend.

          1. Just wondering because for those of those that are going to be making a four hour (round trip) drive, this isn’t real convenient and Colorado is a big state with lots of locations other than Denver. That’s my 2 cents worth and it’s also why I haven’t attended thus far.

            1. And since it’s not an election, the whole state really does matter.  😉

I think we should really have it in the geographic center of the state, which is located 30 miles north of Pikes Peak in Park County. That way, nobody can complain about it being closer than or further away from the designated place!

Also, it was in Boulder–still Metro, but you get what I’m trying to say–last time and only 4 people (not including Phoenix Rising’s wife) attended. But I agree it should be somewhere outside the metro area (if not this time, then the next).

In all seriousness though, where would be a fair place? I’m trying to think about highways and routes and what would be convenient for everyone. Maybe Grand Lake or somewhere like that? I don’t think there’s ever going to be a place where everyone will be happy, but it needs to be in a non-metro place at some point this year.

              1. and then come up the back way to it. I don’t know. I live in Estes so my commute is going to be time consuming no matter what. Personally, I’d like to see it either on the western slope or down by Pueblo for a real change in scenery. I know it’s a tough thing to plan–our state ain’t exactly the size of Delaware. I just think we need to think outside Denver for a change.

And I should add, because I mean this, I think you’re awesome for trying to put this all together. It’s an awful lot like herding cats. 🙂

                1. in meeting on Colorado’s Southern Slope, one suggestion would be the Owl Cigar Store in Canon City.  Established in 1903, home of the egg burger and real malts – plus a couple of members of Flash Cadillac, I believe.  I don’t find a dedicated website, but for those on FB, the Owl Cigar Store has a FB page.

                  1. I’d love to meet there. I’d probably find a hotel to hole up in for the night and make a weekend of it. I’m saving your comment so I can remember this place–it just sounds delightful.

                  1. No.

Although I suppose I could always give everyone the wrong address–there are lots of homes up here that are summer only residences–we could throw one hell of a bash in one of those, provided we don’t all end up in jail for breaking and entering.

              1. If next time your in my mom’s neighborhood you visit her.

Not that I’m pushing for Estes.

ANd as for central localtions- it should be measured on travel time not just geographic measure.

Thus ruling out any weekend location in west of the Ike tunnel.

                  1. You don’t even want to talk about moms.

If I start telling stories about your mom, someone will be going to jail.  Again. ANd it won’t be me going alone this time.

                  2. You wouldn’t be the first person I knew that made that kind of joke.

However at the age of 61 she may be a little above your age limit.

                    1. And I could name a dozen women as old or older that I’d “date” in a heartbeat.

                      Sally Field

                      Barbara Eden

                      Marlo Thomas

                      Doris Day

                      Ann Margaret

                      Caroline Kennedy (a bit younger)

                      And many more.

            1. Not since 2008, I think. SXP has been doing demographic and comment output diaries, and I’ve found them quite interesting.

I’ll throw one up, thanks for the idea.

      1. a diary once, on daily kos that i started around 1am.

to my surprise the next morning i had received some kind advice on

        1) writing a diary

        2) subject verb agreement

        3) finishing a diary rather than trailing off in midsente
