Markey becomes the newest Blue Dog

Rep. Betsy Markey has been named to the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of more than 50 fiscally conservative House Democrats, the group announced Wednesday.

“As a former small business owner, the Blue Dogs share my strong belief in fiscal discipline and responsibility,” the Fort Collins Democrat said in a prepared statement. “Colorado families and small businesses watch their bottom line and have to live within their means, and Congress should be no different. Our children’s futures cannot be built upon a foundation of debt. After years of mismanagement in Washington, I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Blue Dog Coalition to strengthen our economy and bring fiscal discipline and responsibility back to our government.”

  1. The right will vote for the Republican. “I vote for the person, not the party” unaffiliateds will smell moral and intellectual decay. Dems will stay home. Really, Markey should go all the way and have a big “L” tattooed on her forehead.

    1. “I vote for the person, not the party” unaffiliateds will smell moral and intellectual decay.

Care to back that up with facts? I think you’re projecting a wee bit Stagarite.

Markey is going to get re-elected, and if she doesn’t, it won’t be because she was perceived as not liberal enough. That’s just ludicrous.

I would bet you on this, but I don’t know what we would bet. Any ideas?

        1. There are so many posters that say “back that up with facts”…when was the last time you saw someone in line to vote that had a fact sheet?  Get real, politics is no place for facts it’s all perception.  I’m not saying I agree with the statement that Stagarite makes.  I think it is a label she will wear proudly in the district, and it will do nothing but help her.  I say that with NO FACTS.

          1. I was being funny. If risking also being offensive.

            You are just incoherent. Huh?

I’ve been waiting for a signature line that will just kill. “politics is no place for facts” is pretty good. But just pretty good. It makes me smile- not actually laugh. No way I’d spit my coffee all over my monitor. At least not by itself, with the right set up, maybe.

          2. My point was more in trying to back up that emotion with actual numbers of voters. Stagarite, if I’m not mistaken, doesn’t live in CD-4. I think there’s a rather large disconnect between liberals in the Denver Metro or Boulder areas and Democrats outside of CD-1 and CD-2. They seem to think that all Democrats think and vote the same way as them.

I was merely trying to point out that, for some moderate Dems and most independents in CD-4, this might actually be a good thing for them. Markey is living up to her reputation as a fiscal conservative, it’s what she ran on, and it’s part of why she did so well.

I’m not saying Markey is going to blow out her opponent like she did with Musgrave in ’08, but I think that she will be in a good position to win re-election.

Stagarite’s criticism would play well in a primary, but without a primary opponent forthcoming, the general election is the question.

But thanks for your comment. You’re right that emotion plays into people’s minds when they’re voting, I was just trying to say that the facts on the ground in CD-4 are that they are not going to get riled up by the kind of things that rile up Daily Kos.

  2. …different deal in the Democrat party than it does away from the world of make-believe.  You can’t be part of the 111th congress with any significant “Aye” votes and claim you give a rat’s ass about the deficit or national debt.

It’s a moot point.  She’s going to be a member of the BDC for about 13 months.  Then she should start looking for a career adviser.

    1. http://www.cbpp.org/cms/index….

Some critics charge that the new policies pursued by President Obama and the 111th Congress generated the huge federal budget deficits that the nation now faces. In fact, the tax cuts enacted under President George W. Bush, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the economic downturn together explain virtually the entire deficit over the next ten years.

But I guess the debt that was racked up by Republicans was good. It’s amazing how being a conservative means you have such a short memory.

Any other myths you need me to dispel?

  3. Ok, not terribly surprising but disappointing nonetheless. But the bottom line is we need to watch what she does – what she works on and how she votes.

It’s a fact of life that Betsy Markey and John Salazar represent districts that lean Republican and that means a more conservative Representative than we will get in CD-1 or 2. Our actual choice is a blue dog democrat or a republican.

With some blue dogs they might as well be a republican. With others, they are about as liberal as their district will accept. To date Betsy has fallen in the second category – but time will tell.

    I remain hopeful.

    1. The 3rd and 4th CDs are much more conservative than Boulder and Denver, and woe to Democrats who forget that. Even most of the Democrats in both districts are conservative on fiscal issues. This is a necessary move by Markey.

  4. I don’t care about that so-called coalition.  They can’t stay together anyway.  I’m more concerned when my rep votes for stupid amendments like Stupak or the bankruptcy bill.  That’s why I can’t whole-heartedly support Salazar.  He plays the Clinton game or triangulation.  Just stand up and be honest.
