What you can do to fight back this week (July 2)

  • by: ProgressNow Colorado

Last weekend, thousands of Coloradans marched in downtown Denver, in solidarity with protests occurring in cities around the nation. After the Trump administration’s disastrous policy of separating families at the border broke down under international condemnation, hundreds of children remain separated from their parents—and Trump’s inhumane persecution of asylum-seekers and families coming to America for a better life continues.

We don’t all agree on a difficult issue like immigration, but Coloradans agree that making children suffer over a dispute between adults is wrong. This is not how the greatest nation in the world solves its problems. We can do better, and the first step toward doing better is acknowledging our mistakes. Thousands of Americans did so this weekend, and millions more will in November.

Thank you again for doing your part to keep America great. Not to make America great, Because America is already great. This fight is about protecting the essential values of freedom, fairness, and opportunity that we have always aspired to as Americans, even though our history doesn’t always live up to those ideals. Each new day is a chance to leave our state and nation a little better than we found it for everyone. Over time, that is what adds up to greatness.

With that in mind, here are a few ways you can make a difference for the week of July 2:

Featured Event: Be A Hero Tour! CO-03

Join #BeAHero Health care activist Ady Barkan and local leaders to share our stories and join the fight to save our health care in Colorado and across the United States. There will be food, opportunities to learn from each other and share our commitment to being a health care voter this election. FREE and open to all.

Where: Angelo’s Pizza Tavern, 105 East Riverwalk, Pueblo
When: Sunday, July 8 at 5:00pm

Museo De Las Americas: Life con Frida

Arvadans for Progressive Action: Cultivating Constructive Conversations and Saving our Democracy

“How could you have voted for him?” “Well at least he was better than Hillary!” If you are SO TIRED of this conversation and ready to move towards more constructive dialogue, this event is for you! Healthy conversation about politics is vital to a democracy, and let’s admit that this country needs a refresher. Keiva Hummel from the National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation will share her thoughts about a better way to talk with each other, then Senator Rachel Zenzinger will follow with why this is so important in the November elections. Please come, and bring a friend!

Where: First United Church of Arvada, 7195 Simms St, Arvada
When: Saturday, July 7 at 4:00pm

Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition: Citizenship Workshop

Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition offers citizenship workshops for legal permanent residents to earn citizenship. Sign up today!

The Annual Trans & SOFFA picnic is a summer celebration for trans & gender-expansive folks and their significant others, friends, family, and allies (‘SOFFA’). This is Out Boulder County’s 4th annual picnic and we can’t wait to see you! We will provide the basics (burgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, buns, toppings, and drinks etc.), you can bring a side dish to share and some games and picnic gear (blankets, frisbee, casual yard games, cards, camp chair, whatever).

Where: Tom Watson Park trail head, 6180 N 63rd St, Boulder
When: Saturday, July 7 at 5:00pm

Have a great holiday week! We’ll be back next Monday with many more ways to get involved.
