Today’s mail had a rather interesting piece of junk: a membership card from the American Federation of Federal, State, County and Municipal Workers Local 1876.
Given that I’ve been unemployed for the past five months, I found this amusing, sort of.
I checked to see where this was coming from, and found that (surprise!) local 1876 is Colorado WINS. I called the local number and asked why I was getting a membership card from Colorado WINS/AFSCME. It’s apparently a huge mistake, according to the person who answered the phone at the Denver office. They don’t know HOW it happened (which I take with a grain of salt, given their tactics in the past).
The funny thing is, even when I WAS a state employee, I wouldn’t have signed up for WINS or AFSCME – as a reporter it would have been a massive conflict of interest. I expect a lot of state employees who have NO interest whatsoever in joining the unions are going to be royally annoyed about this.
I’d advise everyone to watch out for inflated membership numbers from WINS and AFSCME in coming weeks.
