Assembly Weekend Polsters Meet-Up Thread

(Promoted by Colorado Pols)

If you’ve been off-planet, or not paying attention, you might not know that the Colorado Democratic State Assembly will be held this Saturday in Broomfield.

Some of us are delegates, and some of us are interested in meeting up with others who post or read Colorado Pols.

At least notaskinnycook and I are. Maybe Davie, possibly MADCO, and we don’t really know who else might show up for a Pols meetup.

So consider this to be an open invitation. Who all wants to get together with Polsters on Friday the 13th evening after the multi-district assemblies? What about Saturday the 14th at lunch? Sunday brunch?

Why? ….because…..It’s just fun to be able to put a face to people’s posts. Last time, Jason S, Canines, Davie, cook and Mrs. cook, Voyageur, and I met in Denver at Jezebel’s. We had a great time. V and I didn’t even get into a bar fight, which possibly disappointed some. We could try again, V. 😉

But there are plenty of you I’d like to meet.

We could see if wishful drinking works at all:

So leave a note on here about if you’re interested  ( or not interested) in a Pols meetup, and if so,  what day/ time / location you prefer. I’m personally partial to Indian food, and there is a Yak and Yeti at 88th / Sheridan close to the convention site. Or for just basic food and drink, I believe that there are several restaurants / concession stands that serve alcohol within the 1st Bankconvention complex.

  1. There is a big meet n greet  reception on Friday night at the Broomfield Event Center 6-8:30 pm. This is open to all delegates and all Dems.

So bring your spouse, your partner, your adult kids, your whomever. Unlike the Repubs, we don't charge just to get in the door.  There is a cash bar , but no admission fee.

We could set up a location for Polsters to meet at this event – it might be the easiest way to meet up.

    1. Scheduling is difficult Fri-Sat, and some won't be around Sunday. With HD and CD assemblies Friday evening, it's going to be tough to even get to the CDP reception – but we should try a Polsters Meet-Up there.

    2. The reception Friday would make most sense for those that are available and staying the night in Broomfield.  But as you would expect, there will only be light refreshments available to stanch your hunger.

I called 1stBankCenter yesterday checking on the likelihood of alcohol at the event on Saturday.  The guy I spoke to checked, but couldn't determine if any of the alcohol-serving concessions would be open Saturday.  The info provided with the Call only indicated soft drinks on the menu. He suggested there are a couple of nearby restaurants if we wanted to drink, but said it's possible some concessions onsite will be serving drinks.

Also, since the agenda doesn't really define the timeline, not sure if the voting will be done before lunch — somehow I doubt they want us inebriated before voting.  So we might need to try to gather that afternoon.

I'll be there only on Saturday, but if the consensus is to meet on Friday around the reception, I'd try to make it.

        1. Indeed we will. cook, do you know where you're going now?

It sounds as though we're coalescing around a meet-up at the Meet n Greet Friday night from 6-8:30, with people arriving and departing as they need to.

The Mountain View Lounge at the First Bank Center at 11450 Broomfield Lane in Broomfield. There are maps at the link Davie put up. From an old Westword article, it sounds like the Mountain View Lounge is on the mezzanine (not the arena floor level) on the southern end of the complex.

I'll be at my CD4 assembly until 5:45 or so, but luckily, it's on site.  So I think we just have to pick out a corner at the Mountain View Lounge to meet, and some kind of secret bat -signal.

I will volunteer to make and post a hand drawn sign that says "Pols Meetup" with a lovely rendition of a decapitated Capitol building.  I'll try to reserve us a large booth or area for us if possible.  Those of you who don't know me – look for a largish, tall, brown haired woman wearing green. I can guarantee that there will be many such women at the Dems meetup, so just keep coming up to them and asking, "Are you mamajama?" until someone decks you or security arrives.

          1. I saw Davie's note, M.J. And in case you didn't see my reply, we picked up our new (used) car this evening. So, now I know we'll be there.

      1. STATEWIDE RECEPTION FRIDAY NIGHT! You are invited to join us for a meet-and-greet reception Friday April 13, 2018 at the Broomfield Event Center 6:00 – 8:30pm.  This reception is for delegates and all Dems.  Come get to know Democratic candidates and other amazing Democrats from around the entire state who active, engaged and ready to create a better future for us all!  Light refreshments will be served. Cash bar. No cost to attend (but donations always welcome!).

I doubt they are taking attendance, so party crashers could make an appearance.

      2. We could make a special nametag for you that says, "Lapsed socialist unaffiliated who sometimes votes Democratic if they're progressive" but that's probably TMI. Just come on in.  It would be nice to meet you. (Forgive if I got any of that about your political history wrong – assume benign intent)

At our county Democratic meeting, we had a long discussion about the tensions growing in the party nationwide, all centering on whether we should hold to our traditions as the blue dot in the red sea here, or expand into a big tent and start trying to appeal to the biggest group around, the unaffiliateds.

Which also happens to be the way we appeal to young people, who tend not to trust parties. It's all, "Watch what I do, not what I say". Imagine that…

Which is a roundabout way for me to say that I think that the Democratic party should be trying to appeal to unaffiliateds and young people, too.  All we ever hear at party meetings are the aging vampires groaning, "We need FRESH BLOOOOOOooood." But they don't want to make the ideological adjustment that attracting "fresh blood" requires. Starting with getting over the whole Bernie Sanders nurtured resentments thing. /rant

So opening up the Dems meet n greet to all comers seems like a good idea to me. If Moddy and the Missus want to show up, I'll shake their hands. Even the Pear is welcome to drown his sorrows at the shorter Coffman's duplicity by sneering at Dems in their natural habitat.

          1. Speaking of the devil, I'm pissed at that fascist slut, Laura Ingraham, for labeling her critics " Stalinists! "

That's my insult and until you've read the anti-Stalin books by Antonov-Ovsoyenko, Tolstoy and Sohlenitsyn, you aren't entitled to use it.  Bottleblonde hasn't read any book except those ghosted for Bill O'Reilly, and even then she stumbled over the bigger words, like "a" "and" and "the."

            1. She probably won’t show at the Meet & Greet . . .

. . . but if she does, sounds like you’ve got her name tag all ready to go!

Mama knew what she was doing picking you!

          2. Actually, I'd wear that nametag if we could squeeze neo-marxist in there somewhere.

I'll have to look to the next chance for a meetup.  I was informed that I'm on dog duty while my wife goes out to play that night after she does her work at the district assembly.  With work, getting home, and then out to Broomfield, I wouldn't make it in time to hang out.

    1. Here's the meet and greet info with maps in the link below.  It's in the Mountain View Lounge inside the 1st Bank Center, 11450 Broomfield Lane, Broomfield.

  2. There is a blizzard warning for far northeast Colorado tomorrow and Saturday. Per National Weather Service:

Sterling-Akron-Julesburg-Holyoke- Including the cities of Crook, Merino, Sterling, Peetz, Akron, Cope, Last Chance, Otis, Julesburg, Ovid, Sedgwick, Amherst, Haxtun, and Holyoke 951 AM MDT Thu Apr 12 2018 …BLIZZARD WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM FRIDAY TO 6 AM MDT SATURDAY… * WHAT…Blizzard conditions expected. Winds gusting as high as 65 mph will cause whiteout conditions in blowing snow. Significant drifting of the snow is likely. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches with locally higher amounts up to 10 inches are expected. * WHERE…Sterling, Akron, Julesburg and Holyoke. * WHEN…From 6 AM Friday to 6 AM MDT Saturday. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Travel will be very dangerous to impossible, including during the evening commute on Friday. Damage to trees and power lines is possible. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… A Blizzard Warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout conditions, making travel extremely dangerous. Do not travel. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1

So if you're driving down to the assembly, make sure you have a safe vehicle.

  3. Update on venue for pols meet up: it is on the 2nd floor (there are elevators) on the sw end of the venue. If you enter from the west, the elevator is right there. I did make a sign. Hope to see y’all.

  4. It was nice to visit with Davie, cook and Mrs cook. The room was standing-room only crowded,  and the sign was hard to see. If we missed someone in the throng, sorry about that.

There were plenty of candidates working the crowd, of course.

Perhaps someone else will host a meetup closer to November.
