No Health Inspectors=Food Poisoning: Who Knew?

The Denver Post becomes the latest in a growing collection of major media outlets to note the deterioration of effective government, quality of life, etc. associated with El Paso County’s decades-long ideological experiment eviscerating its own revenue base. Stridently right-wing El Paso County has long collected a small fraction of what similar Colorado counties get […]

Penry for Governor? Um, No

Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry is apparently beginning to seriously engage in discussions about running for Governor, and may soon file paperwork to make it official. Penry is doing this quietly while he tries to gauge support for a potential run against Gov. Bill Ritter, and trying to keep this quiet is probably the smartest […]

What Schultheis shows us

As you probably already know, Republican State Senator Dave Schultheis shocked the public last week by accidentally saying something he really meant out loud.   He explained he could not vote in favor (a second time) of a bill that would require HIV testing for pregnant women, because it would help them escape from the […]

Michael Bennet Revisited

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) I had the pleasure of attending a reception for Senator Bennet this evening at Paula Noonan’s and Phil Doe’s house in South Jeffco, and found him to be sharper, wittier, more passionate, and more convincing as a U.S. Senator than conventional wisdom has yet conceded. Senator Bennet seems to […]

Golden Recall Effort Fails

As The Golden Transcript reports:

The movement to recall six sitting city council members including the mayor fell short on Monday, Feb. 23 when recall organizers failed to turn in any documentation by the 5 p.m. deadline…

…Petitions to recall Smith, and council members Karen Oxman, Joe Behm, Diane Chesbro, Bill Fisher and Marjorie Sloan were filed with the City Clerk’s office in December. The petitions claimed council had been fiscally irresponsible, lacked civility and improperly convened executive sessions.

Ward One Councilwoman Mary Weaver was the only sitting council member not recalled.

Recall organizers then had 60 days to collect enough signatures to force a special election with an estimated cost of $50,000.

“I’m glad the citizens of Golden recognize that the recall petitions are intended for serious breaches of the public’s trust, not for petty disagreements about city policy decisions” said City Manager Mike Bestor.

Phone calls made to two recall supporters were not returned, A third recall supporter declined to comment.

This is good news for many reasons, not the least that the city won’t have to spend unnecessary money for a recall election when a general election will be held in November anyway. There was no real reason for the recall effort aside from the personal gripes of a small minority.

Obama asks Dems to stay the course in Iraq.

. On Friday, 27 February, President Obama presented his plan for withdrawing all US military forces from Iraq within 16 months.   Except that it will take 19 months. And we will leave behind more combat power (wielded by fewer troops) than we kept in Germany after we defeated them in WW II.   …….. […]

Something old, something new

No, no one I know is getting married. I just ran across an interesting link to a page for some people who want to re-start the Whig party.  Interesting stuff! http://modernwhig.org/ This could be an idea whose time has come. I’ve seen quite a few online laments in the past few days from Republicans who […]

End of the Rocky Mountain News

UPDATE: July 10, 1861. Remains true today. Original post follows. Last edition publishes tomorrow. So much for long goodbyes. We are, well, needless to say. Colorado’s oldest newspaper will publish its final edition Friday. The Rocky Mountain News, less than two months away from its 150th anniversary, will be closed after a search for a […]

So much for that “Professor of Conservative Thought.”

I meant to post this a few weeks back, but now that it’s official, this is as good a time as any. University of Colorado Chancellor Bud Peterson will leave Boulder next month for the presidency post at Georgia Tech University Most likely going with him will be the much maligned idea of an endowed […]

My interview with Attorney General Suthers

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) I met this afternoon with Attorney General John Suthers. He was gracious enough to give me an hour of his time, and it was very illuminating. The biggest thing that hit me was we were about 30 minutes into the interview and I realized that he had not said […]

Some Costs of the EFCA

Knowing that they could use some editorial neutrality and to retain some forced union dues generating jobs, Union Bosses caved on their members to support the bigger picture. Now we (the consumer) all appreciate the continued availability of both the Rocky and the Post, after all choice is a good thing to have. http://www.rockymountainnews.c… With […]

Meet David Canter

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) David Canter, one of the two Democratic candidates for Congress in CD-6, sat down recently to talk with me about why he is running, and what he feels qualifies him for the position. Here are some excerpts from that conversation: SH: David, tell me why you decided to run […]

My interview with Secretary Buescher

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) I talked with Secretary of State Bernie Buescher this afternoon. He is an interesting guy, starting off talking for 5 minutes about the various iPhone apps he uses and demonstrating UrbanSpoon (which has a very cool way of clicking submit – you shake the phone and it makes a […]

How Low Did Renfroe Go?

The Colorado Springs Gazette reports more of what Sen. Scott Renfroe had to say about gay people, women, etc. on the floor of the Colorado Senate yesterday. “I’m not saying this (homosexuality) is the only sin that’s out there,” said Sen. Scott Renfroe, R-Greeley. “We have murder. We have all sorts of sin. We have […]

Post Applauds Marostica for Pragmatism

Echoing our sentiments from last week, from The Denver Post: It’s always refreshing to see an elected official shed partisan politics in favor of pragmatism – even if the delivery is botched. Such was the case this week under the gold dome when Sen. Don Marostica broke ranks with state Republicans in supporting a bill […]

Another Plea For GOP To Stop Alienating Hispanics

Good advice every time they hear it–too bad they never seem to listen, as the Pueblo Chieftain reports: The Republican Party’s message has been all wrong, according to GOP member Nelson Balido. “We haven’t been doing a good job telling our story,” Balido said in an interview before his speech Saturday night at the annual […]

My lunch with Brandon & Rollie

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) Today I had the opportunity to have lunch with Senators Brandon Shaffer and Rollie Heath after a town meeting they just held. So I got them coming off of 2½ hours of discussing what they are doing down at the legislature and answering questions. That worked really well as […]

Taxing Driving

Via Politico: Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood tells the AP that the Obama administration is considering taxing drivers based on the number of miles they drive. “We should look at the vehicular miles program where people are actually clocked on the number of miles that they traveled,” LaHood said in an interview. “What I see this […]

Marostica’s true crime: pulling back the curtain

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) Marostica will apparently keep his seat on the JBC, but as penance will have to apologize to Mark Hillman and Jon Caldara. This is the best way for the Republican leadership to defuse what was rapidly becoming a terrible situation for them. The ousting option would have meant a […]

“Vagina DeGette,” Anyone?

In the spirit of a week already thick with examples of GOP regettable behavior, Colorado Media Matters dutifully reports: KHOW’s Boyles repeatedly distorted Rep. DeGette’s name with female genital reference Discussing President Obama’s signing of the economic recovery bill at a ceremony in Denver, 630 KHOW-AM’s Peter Boyles on his February 18 program repeatedly referred […]

My Coffee with Representative Levy

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) I met with Representative Claire Levy this afternoon for an hour to hear what she was doing. So here’s the report from the Representative of the People’s Republic of Boulder. We talked first about the cell phone bill. She brought it up figuring it would get defeated but that […]

“Swastika Guy” Fracas Enters Backpedal Phase

UPDATE: Good stuff from Westword’s Melanie Asmar: Malkin suggests to Rocky reporter David Montero that “Swastika Guy,” as he’s come to be known, may have been a “ringer” trying to discredit her by slipping into the mass of people waiting for a Malkin photo-op after the rally. But if Swastika Guy was a left-leaning operative, […]

“Judgment, or lack thereof”

Media Matters’ home office: Michelle Malkin is up with her defense for a photo we posted yesterday (originally posted by ProgressNowColorado) showing the right-wing blogger posing for a photo with a man holding a sign that uses a circled swastika as the “O” in Obama.  The photo was taken at a Colorado rally against the […]

Stimulus: bringing results home to Colorado

The White House just released its projections for the job creation results of the stimulus package.  It looks like good news for Colorado – 60,000 jobs created over the next two years.  This seems to be very good news for those Representatives and Senators who supported the stimulus – details below the fold. According to […]

Mesa GOP abandon ‘principles’–Everyone else is doing it.

(We don’t not want the money – promoted by redstateblues) In what it admits was a futile publicity stunt to further highlight its irrelevancy in the changing political dynamics of the state, this past Saturday Mesa County Republicans rallied against the stimulus bill. Local Republicans rallied on the steps of the old county courthouse Saturday […]
