Amateur Hour, NRCC Edition

As the Fort Collins Coloradoan reports:

A coalition of conservative Democrats said national Republicans sent out a “blatantly false” news release saying Rep. Betsy Markey and other representatives had been denied membership in the group.

The National Republican Congressional Committee sent the news releases Thursday to media in 19 House districts they’re likely to target in 2010, saying the local representative was “rejected” for membership in the Blue Dog Coalition.

The members singled out by the NRCC – including Markey – never sought affiliation with the Blue Dog Democrats, a group of 51 fiscally conservative Democrats, said Kristen Hawn, a spokeswoman for the group.

“It’s a lie,” she said. [Pols emphasis]

“This is yet another blatantly false press release sent out by Washington Republicans who are looking to attack fiscally responsible, common-sense Democrats like the Blue Dogs in the House,” Hawn said. “Anyone who knows Betsy Markey, or is familiar with her fiscally responsible voting record, knows that this is a shameless political ploy that has no basis in truth.”

The Republican release included a quote from the NRCC’s communications director, Ken Spain, saying “rejection” by the Blue Dog Coalition demonstrated that each representative wasn’t fiscally responsible…

Simple, right? The NRCC was totally wrong, a simple correction/terse “regret the error” would suffice, and everybody could move on with their lives.

But of course these are the same clueless Republican hacks we’ve been talking about for years, aren’t they? Down with the ship they go.

“So is Betsy Markey admitting that she did not even bother to apply for membership in the Blue Dog Coalition?” Spain said…

Did you see that? Without even blinking, folks–though you can imagine the “we just screwed this whole thing up” feeling of horror the guy was experiencing at that exact moment. And just to settle any remaining questions about credibility,

The NRCC e-mailed a list Thursday of 19 House Democrats they were targeting with e-mails alleging they had been denied membership in the Blue Dog Coalition. One of those was Rep. Joe Connelly of Indiana, who has been a member of the coalition for more than two years. [Pols emphasis]

Nothing says “ignore my next press release” quite like this. Republican or Democrat, you kind of have to agree that working with the press gets harder once you’re discovered to be full of bullshit–and only gets worse after you start defending your bullshit.

  1. What’s in the budget? Golly gee, but that would involve reading it! Maybe even doing interviews!

Much easier to just reprint a press release. “According to Republicans, …” “Republicans expressed disappointment over…” “Tom Delay chastised…”

Then if absolutely necessary, for balance, try to contact the other side. “A blue dog could not be found to comment by press time. In fact most dogs are not blue. They are somewhat brown or possibly yellowish.”

You’ve got to say one thing for Republicans: their press releases may not make “sense” or have any “truth” to them, but they do emit them regularly.

  2. Apparently, it now operates on the principle that if you don’t have a legitimate attack to level against the opposition just lie about them. All they are doing is undermining their credibility.

The Republican Party doesn’t go after Democrats on policy grounds because they don’t believe the government should exist. All that is left is this . . . fictional press releases based on someone’s imagination.

    1. Tucker Carlson was referring to at CPAC when he got booed for saying that the NYT at least spells names right, gets correct dates etc. and the right ought to take note of that.  It was his way of saying that the right has a credibility problem based on putting stuff out there that simply isn’t true and they didn’t want to hear it.  I guess they have THEIR reality just like Rove had HIS numbers in 2006 when he swore the Dems were NOT taking over congress.

  3. The Blue Dogs cap their membership at a set percent of the total number of Democrats in Congress. I believe it’s now at 21%. There is a waiting list to be accepted into the BD caucus currently.

The New Democrats have a higher threshhold, and the Progressives an even higher number, but none have more than 40% of the total Democrats in Congress, even when you include overlaps between multiple caucuses.

      1. Junior year of college I had a relatively easy job on campus, and took it upon myself to learn every Congressperson and district, along with general locations and whatnot. I was very bored, but it’s come in handy for random trivia.

Republican ideological caucuses, interestingly, don’t seem to have the same requirements. The Republican Study Committee, for example, will let in any Representative who supports their conservative planks. They number near 100, larger than any of the “Big 3” Dem caucuses.

  4. Her support for card check in that district will cost her dearly.  Even the voters of the Democrat stronghold of the district — Fort Collins — overwhelmingly opposed a big union measure recently at the polls.

    1. she is only out ahead of the curve, remember, the President is pushing the Employee Free Choice Act, and most people don’t know much about it.

But they do know Obama, and he has 71% approval.

If he is behind it, the floundering R’s will not be able to stop it.

      1. Obama will ultimately have to make the case that this is a good idea.  Popularity buys him the attention to do so.  I don’t think he’ll succeed in convincing the majority of CD-4 that EFCA is a good policy.

That said, though, “Markey’s toast” is a bit ridiculous.  This issue will get used in a few ads against her.  But the focus of any campaign against a Democrat in a majority Republican district in 2010 is going to be on the the same old Republican canards: taxes and spending.  Markey has a tough election in front of her, and she always has.  Thinking that the EFCA is going to decide an election two years out is just plain silly though; we are 45 days into the first of two legislative sessions, for goodness sake!

    2. And just like Libertad, I expect you’ll blame teachers for your not knowing that Democrat is a noun, and that Democratic (or democratic) is an adjective, once again demonstrating the hypocrisy of those who rail against government, but expect it to solve all of their problems. If you had just worked harder in school, you might have learned this.

My 5th-grader knows the difference between a noun and an adjective. But then again, he knows that school is important.

  5. The hell you say. Republicans? Lying?!

Sorry, it really should be shocking though. The fact that we are all not shocked and outraged every time Republicans brazenly lie is part of what is wrong with America.
