Everybody Loves Bernie

  • by: Colorado Pols

As the Grand Junction Sentinel reports:

Former state Rep. Bernie Buescher, D-Grand Junction, was sworn in Wednesday as Colorado’s 36th secretary of state on the heels of the state Senate unanimously voting in favor of seating him.

“I regard the position of Secretary of State, in many ways, as the guardian of our system of a republican form of government in this state,” Buescher said after taking his oath of office. “I will do everything in my power to make that process as transparent and effective as it possibly can be.”

…Ahead of the vote, Buescher’s nomination received a healthy heaping of praise from lawmakers of all stripes.

“I’m thrilled to have you step over to the other side of the street,” Sen. Bill Cadman, R-Colorado Springs, said.

Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry, R-Grand Junction, called Buescher’s nomination the “right choice and a smart choice on the part of Gov. Bill Ritter.”

    1. He said this at the Senate Stae Affais Committee confirmation hearing for Bernie.

His tone could have also been read to mean “Damn, I’m glad you’re not in the legislature anymore”

He also jokingly (I think) initially voted no on Bernie’s confirmation and but then asked the Chair to allow him to switch it to yes after Schulteis (the only other R on the committee) also voted yes.

I really think all of the comments were in good fun though. They seemed pretty chummy before and after the hearing. There a fair amount of other funny hijinx related to hearing. I’m glad I went, it was entertaining.

  1. GJ is so stupid for losing Bernie as the Speaker of the House.  He would have been such an incredible asset to the Western Slope.  Now they have some low ranking no-name Republican who will accomplish nothing in the minority.  Fine, your loss is our gain since Bernie now represents all of us, and he’ll do a great job.

    1. The people who know Bernie best recognized his incompetence.  Now the whole state will get a chance to know him better.

If Buescher was really a threat don’t you think Repubs would have put up a fight?

They are looking forward to getting the seat back in Republican hands.

        1. In my world the Republicans didn’t stand for anything.  But, they have a chance to change that this election cycle.

But in the world you live in I guess you don’t know that Obama’s pick for Sec. Commerce didn’t just drop out because he is being investigated for fraud.

The Treasury Sec choice is under fire for not completing his patriotic duty of paying his taxes.  Not to mention his legal duty.

Sen. Obama’s seat is being picked by a guy under investigation for pay-to-play.

The Gov. of IL just thumbed his nose at your president and your Senate leader and they had to swallow hard and confirm a guy they said they absolutely would not confirm.

States all over the US under Democratic control are going bankrupt.

Yep, you guys are on a roll.  Please continue.

          1. States under Democratic control are going bankrupt? So the states under Republican control are doing fine?

And the country – it has been under Republican control with President Bush – it’s doing just great.

Get back to your patients, foot doctor.

          2. There isn’t a Michael Dorsett from Colorado in the AMA directory.

Are you Michael Dorsett MD from Lubbock Texas, or are you just pretending to be an MD?

If you are from Texas, what the f*ck do you know about Colorado politics?

                1. bullshitter.  But, coming from a true professional such as yourself I take that as a compliment.

Where I come from and where I live now is not your affair.

                    1. Pretending to be a doctor on a blog about politics probably isn’t a crime. But maybe it should be. 🙂

      1. Help me out.

BTW, the GOP didn’t put a fight because it’d have been pointless.  They’ve accepted that the Gov. gets to appoint whomever he likes and should.  Even Wadhams thinks so.

          1. I say you’re an idiot.  Don’t question me, idiot.

Seriously, not a single example?  Willis has examples proving you wrong and he’s only hit the tip of the iceberg.

      2. He has a marvelous track record of straightening out troubled departments during the Romer adminsitration. And his chairmanship of JBC was touted by pretty much all of his House colleagues, D and R alike.

I think even Doug Bruce may have said something nice about him once. But that have been just gas, with Bruce its hard to tell the difference.

      3. Particularly when you are in the minority and can’t win anyway. Democrats were in the majority in 2005 when John Suthers was appointed AG, and they didn’t fight him, either.

        Colorado Pols, esq.

  2. It was the first time I had met him and I have to say Scott and I had a really good time speaking and laughing with the two of them.

We have some fantastic people in the Dem Party here in Colorado.

  3. Dems promote a guy the voters fired.

    Sounds about right.

I know several people who are looking at getting that office back into Republican hands.  That is with a big R.

    1. because the Republican party isn’t in shambles, and they aren’t getting ready to battle for the ideological soul of the party.

Plus, they have a great party chair who’s done so much, and their slate of potential candidates is far from weak.

      [/snark]

    2. After representing it for a number of years.

His seat was never strong, so I wouldn’t read too much into those November tea leaves.

Unless, of course, your degree is in tea leaf reading.

  4. Others may be able to fill in the blanks here, but some of the Republicans in that office since 1995, at least, might have been jailed if partisanship, ineptitude or laziness were crimes.

Remember Vicki Buckley (1995-1999), who ‘lost’ ballot petititions, was involved in a minor corruption scandal, etc?

Donetta Davidson (1999-2005) — didn’t hear much about her since she left to take a federal position — but wasn’t she the one s’posed to start fixing the election system after the Bush/Gore fiasco and Help America Vote Act passed?

Gigi Dennis, a vacancy appointment (2005-2007) who managed to get herself tangled and compromised in partisan shenanigans very quickly in her short service as SoS?

Mike Coffman, that hard-working, straight-arrow Republican moderate managed to hire staff involved in conflicts of interest; also managed to bobble certification of the voting machines.

Maybe… well, probably… I’m missing something else that happened to make it impossible for these people to do their jobs properly, but I don’t know that any Republican has the thinnest claim on which to accuse Buescher of incompetence on his secord day of service.   I mean, REALLY doctor!  That’s just nuts.
