From the wire story, complete with blessings from President-elect Barack Obama–full Obama statement follows after the jump:
Gov. Bill Ritter on Saturday appointed Denver Public Schools Superintendent Michael Bennet to fill a Senate vacancy that will be created by the promotion of Sen. Ken Salazar to interior secretary in the Obama administration…
Ritter praised Bennet, 44, as a proven leader and problem-solver in the both public and private sectors.
“This is a critical time in history. The economic challenges facing America and Colorado are unprecedented,” Ritter said in a written statement. “Our challenges are so serious that it will take a new generation of leaders, a new way of thinking and a bold new approach to problem-solving to steer us through this.”
In a statement from his office, Obama called Bennet an excellent choice who will be “a breath of fresh air in Washington.”
“Michael Bennet perfectly reflects the qualities of the ruggedly independent state he has been chosen to serve,” Obama said.
“Filling Ken Salazar’s boots in the US Senate is a tall order. But in selecting Michael Bennet, Governor Ritter has made an excellent choice.
“Michael Bennet perfectly reflects the qualities of the ruggedly independent state he has been chosen to serve. An innovator in the public and private sectors, he has shown himself willing to challenge old thinking and stale policies.
“His breakthrough work at the helm of Denver’s schools has reflected that commitment, and established Michael as one of the nation’s leading education reformers.
“He will be a breath of fresh air in Washington,” said President-elect Obama.
Outgoing Sen. Ken Salazar offers a friendly-but-stern
headpat to Sen.-designate Michael Bennet.

That was a San Luis Valley blessing.
After reading his bio, etc., and watching the press conference, I’d say Bennet is a good pick.
In terms of credibility, he has more talent and expertise than all of the other candidates except, perhaps, Hick.
I thought the presentations were fine. What the heck did the nit picking union sore losers expect?
The family is charming, and it doesn’t hurt to have a spouse who’s also a Yale graduate and knows the environmental issues better than most in the state.
Next to Suthers, Bennet looks like a political talent. And I’m waiting with baited breathe to see who the GOP comes up with to run against Bennet.
The only thing that will hurt him in 2010, I’m speculating, is that he’ll have to run with Ritter and on Obama’s record.
(dare I say) surprisingly cogent analysis, AS. (Though I’d disagree, I’d say Perlmutter and Romanoff have as much talent and expertise as Bennet and Hickenlooper).
Eighteen months from now, I’m betting that Michael Bennet will be just another normal face in the top political leadership lineup, and we will treat him as though we elected him. Good luck Wadhams and Scattered Crew.
Among the Congressional Delegation, Bennet’s mind is probably the best – and we’ve got some very good talent going. He’ll outshine Udall, and he’s preferable to Salazar. He’s got lots of events between here and there to get acquainted with those Party regulars currently complaining.
Lackluster press conference? (Comment by CrazyFox) Aren’t they all like that? Ritter needs to take care of his voice or he won’t have one to run with.
Ritter’s hidden talent is appointing top people in a very thoughtful way.
Is it a coincidence that Mark Udall’s wife, Maggie Fox, is regional director of the Sierra Club and that Michael Bennet’s wife, Susan Daggett, works for the Sierra Club’s Legal Defense Fund?
This may explain how someone who has only lived in Colorado for a mere 12 years “earned” a senatorship from Gov. Ritter.
Problem is that this state has been Californiated, and it’ll probably vote for the Sierra Club’s nonsense.
The Boulder City Council elections – it’s always the slate endorsed by the Sierra Club.
Bennet had better not fuck up, else Ken will send him to Hell. Truly bizarre press moment, but I love how Salazar commanded the moment: the only true political luminary in a cast of lightweights! NOTE: drama is a plus on my scale.
…the Denver Post reports that he was “unemotional”. Body language suggests that Ken was not all excited about Ritter’s choice. Which leads me to another thought: this Senate decision seemed to be agonizing and troublesome for poor Ritter, who then finished the tortured process by launching a lead balloon. In contrast, imagine the celebratory, circus-like atmosphere that Ken S. would have conjured for this event! Where Ritter saw a chore, Salazar would’ve seen an opportunity for extravaganza.
And, yes, bitches, I know I’m responding to my own post.
Ritter seemed like he was reading his speech for the first time and Bennet was about as exciting as a DPS lunch menu. Blame Evan Dryer, I suppose. If Bennet is going to do well campaigning, he better get some coaching and step up his game.
Did anyone else freak out while watching the press conference when he or she realized that Bennet sounds startlingly like Sen. Joe Lieberman???
Also, notice how Bennet pronounces “Colorado.” Definitely like a non-native! (Not that I care.)
He has 3 daughters. We know that dads with 3 daughters rock!!!
Did anyone else listen to both Ritter & Salazar describe Hickenlooper as “the best mayor in America.” Not the best mayor of a major city, but the best mayor period.
Now I’ll agree that Boulder’s mayor is not the best, but is Hick superior to every other mayor in Colorado?
I thought Hick was the mayor.
Obama is solidifying his base. Bennet is real smart with the kind of educational background which Obama can relate to. By choosing Bennet, Obama takes over the democratic party in Colorado…left over clintonites are left out. I think he is going to do the same thing in New York with Caroline Kennedy. Obama is not going to worry about inparty fighting in either state. The Obama train has left the station.
What? You think this is Ritter decision? Ritter has not made an independent decision since Elaine Berman and Cole Finegan’s wife (at least, I think that was who the coauthor was) wrote that Post OpEd back in aught seven, saying that Planned Parenthood et.al. did not have to worry about Ritter’s so-called life position….he was good to go with pro-choice polices. Ritter did not get that kind of endorsement by playing independent. or maverick, or rogue.
Romanoff is pushing forty w/o a law degree or a family…too slow, overage in grade. I think Obama is just looking for sheer brain power…I can’t blame him.
Now, I don’t like the choice. I am emphathic with New York politicians who keep having to step aside for the star power who want to use the state as a stepping stone. I think this is bad news for the vigor of the Colorado
democratic party.
However, Obama won, fair and square. He is in charge and this is his call. god, am I falling in line or what. Me and Dan Willis will probably wind up in the same line to kiss the gd ring.
and was serving as Speaker while getting his law degree from DU (he finished in 2008). So yes, getting your second advanced degree while running a state, getting Ref C passed, and outsmarting a sitting Gov (Owens) on immigration might take you a little longer.
He has an undergraduate degree from Yale, speaks fluent Spanish and taught in Central America.
In the brain power sweepstakes, Romanoff unquestionably wins the grand prize over anyone else in Colorado and most people in DC.
Romanoff hasn’t passed the bar, yet, as far as I know, which Is what I meant to say. Let me be clear, I thought Ramonoff should have been the appointee. I think he is bright, qualified, and put himself in front of the voters.
However, if you are checking out resumes, a Master’s from JFK School at Harvard, speaking Spanish, and teaching school in Central America, are not particularly noteworthy. Lots of people have been there, done that…doesn’t Rick Garcia have one of those Master’s? Anyway, Ramonoff’s success as a Democratic legislator is outstanding and that is why I think he should have been the appointee.
Bennets superior credentials are why I think he is not.
Whatever it might mean, Colorado sends 2 first term Senators to the 111th Congress.
I am not aware of that happening recently.
Silverman and cohost bothways were opining friday afternoon on the negative impact this situation will have on the “Democrat” party in 2010.
Bothways and guest Wadhams seemed to open the republican 2010 Senate run with the sledgehammer “not playing the business as usual politics will cost the Democrats at the voting booth” prediction. They intimated that Hick and Rep. Perlmutter will be so miffed at not getting picked that they’ll wage internal warfare aginst their party. That will translate into voters turning against the Democrats in Nov. 2010.
One can only hope Wadhams remains State Chair for the forseeable future.
Hickenlooper is miffed over Bennet’s appointment, he’s as out of touch with reality as ever. Beauprez, I can understand — he still probably thinks he won the governorship two years ago — but Wadhams ought to know better.
…seems like a jab at him to pick his former employee rather than him, after Hickenlooper publicly begged for the job. I would be miffed. But I guess not everyone is as petty as I.
of a Senate seat without having to leave Denver or commit to a statewide campaign in two years. What’s to be miffed about?
…Bennet as Uncle Junior.
I hope the ending is more satisfying.
