Lionel Rivera Is In 2006

  • by: Colorado Pols

Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera is apparently running for something — or he just wants people to know that 2006 will be a big year for him. Check out www.LionelRivera.com.

It looks like we may have another candidate in CD-5.

  1. Depending how many of these guys get on the GOP primary ballot, it could be the “prefect storm” that Jay Fawcett and the Dems have been praying for.

With so many Republicans in the race, a larger-than-usual number of petition candidates would not surprise me. Could we see as many as 5 names on the primary ballot?

  2. Dan,

You are crazy if you think that.

It would be like me saying that if DeGette retired and 8 Democrats were running in a Primary for her seat that the Republican would have a shot at winning.

    It just ain’t gonna happen.

  3. I don’t think you’ve paid enough attention in the past to how things work in El Paso and the rest of the 5th Dan. So far this has less feel of a “Perfect Storm” for Mr. Fawcett than just business as usual in EL Paso… Hell they fight like this for the DA and Sheriff’s jobs.

I think Rivera is going to be named BB’s running mate after the Primary. This is just his way of keeping his name in the paper and building a base for BB and himslef in the 5th… BB has solid support up here in the 4th, those of us in the Holtzman Camp know we have an uphill battle: Hence the reason Lola seems to be everywhere up here latley. But it seems to me BB wouldn’t need Rivera to prop up the 5th, unless he knew he was in trouble there.

The only thing Rivera is running for is Lt Gov.

  4. The Denver scenario would depend on the Republican, and which Dem won the primary. Consider for a moment if one of those 8 candidates was Waldo Benavidez and he won the primary by all the others splitting the vote. The GOP candidate, if a strong one, could actually win CD1 in that scenario.

In a primary with many candidates there is a better chance that a truly awful candidate may advance to the general. This happened a in CD2 in the early 90’s. The GOP primary winner was Pat Miller, a extemist even by most GOP standards. She got traunced in the general. A moderate may not have been able to beat David Skaggs, but they would have given him a run for his money in the newly-drawn district.

In CD5, there are at least a couple of GOP candidates who may not find much support amongst the general election voters, even those registered as R’s. And Fawcett has so far displayed that he can go toe to toe with the GOP and take advantage of any weakness they give him.

In any event, I suspect the national GOP will be spending more than they anticipated in CD5 this year!

  5. Dan,

The reality is that whoever wins the Republican Primary in the 5th CD will win the General Election too.  The rank and file Republican in El Paso, Lake, Park, Teller, and Fremont counties will not vote for even a moderate Democrat.

To truly have a chance the Democrat would have to be a military vet, pro-life, against gay marriage, and fiscally conservative.  That will never happen.  And the RNC and NRCC will not spend one cent on the 5th CD race.

By the way, what has Fawcett done to make you think he can go toe to toe with the Republicans?

    Aluminum Foil Mike,

Rivera is not going to be Bob?s running mate.

  6. You’re half right, Dan.  In 1970, the Democrats split in Denver when anti-war Craig Barnes defeated long-time incumbent Byron Rogers in a Democratic primary.  Republican Mike McKevitt won the seat.  But in 1972, Pat Schroeder re-united the Ds and took back the seat, which they have ruled ever since.
There is, however, zero chance that the Rs will lose 5 this year.  The party won’t spend 50 cents there in the fall, outside of what their candidate raises on his or her own.  Fawcett and Winter  are both zero possibility candidates, which doesn’t mean they aren’t good people, just that they have no hope of winning.  Musgrave has to be considered a heavy favorite but that one isn’t impossible if Angie catches a break or Bush continues his descent in the polls.

  7. I agree with Draft Nancy, Nancy Sharpe is the clear choice to be Beauprez’s running mate. I am encouraged to see that 30,000 people have recognized the momentum and advantages that her candidacy would bring to the table, furthermore her mayoral experience helps balance the ticket with Beauprez’s strong legislative experience, and her strong business roots would solidify Beauprez/Sharpe as the pro-business ticket.

  8. Naming Sharpe as a running mate would make sense, Sharpe has just been named the 2006 Chair for the Denver Regional Council of Governments. She is a proven leader in Colorado and she will be a proven leader as our Lt. Governor.

  9. Anyone that thinks a Dem has a chance in the 5th is out of their mind and has never been south of of Park Meadows and and east of Durango. Case closed. Custer county is not even in the 5th, so a Dem from there I’m sure has a great chance!

  10. Republican= Earn your living, ask for nothing, pay your taxes for minimal government services, protect your country at all costs.

Democrat= Take from those that have and give to those that are too lazy to get out of bed, make the government as large as possible so there is minimal individual personal responsibility, tax everything that doesn’t move, tax everything that does move, hold hands and sing Kum Ba Ya when confronted by bad people………..

  11. Dem translation:

Republican= Work 3 jobs so you can afford an apartment, self-reliance above community, drown the Government baby in the bathtub, and erode the Bill of Rights.

Democrat= Promote reasonable standard of living, support cost-effective regulation in the public interest, balance budgets, and understand situations before bombing innocents.

  12. Phoenix,

Wow, you are ignorant.  Let me help you out a little:

    You say:
Republicans “work 3 jobs so you can afford an apartment”

    Reality:
There are Republicans who work multiple jobs to make ends meet, I have even done it myself.  I find it a source of pride that Republicans, in general, would rather work two or three jobs than to rely on the government for help.

    You say:
Republicans believe in “self-reliance above community”

    Reality:
When the government forces you to be a part of a community it is doomed to failure.  Republicans are part of many communities; we just don’t believe that those communities should be imposed on us by the government.

    You say:
Republicans want to “drown the Government baby in the bathtub”

    Reality:
We need basic government services such as common defense, infrastructure, police and fire, and the like.  Other than that, drown away.

    You say:
Republicans want to “erode the Bill of Rights”

    Reality:
It is the Democrats who want to destroy the freedom of religion and the right to bear arms.

    You say:
Democrats “Promote reasonable standard of living”

    Reality:
Nowhere in the constitution is there a guarantee for a reasonable standard of living.  If you want a certain standard of living you need to work for it and not rely on government handouts.

    You say:
Democrats want a “cost-effective regulation in the public interest”

    Reality:
No one knows what the hell you are talking about.

    You say:
    Democrats support “balance budgets”

    Reality:
Democrats in DC have never cut the cost of a program unless it dealt with defense.

    You say:
Democrats try to “understand situations before bombing innocents.”

    Reality:
Maybe that is why Bill Clinton let 800,000 Rwandans die in 100 days of ethnic cleansing.  He just wanted to understand the situation better.

  13. Geez “a”, you’re hard core buddy, getting up early to smack down the big PR. I myself was only going to make fun of him for posting such a stupid, apropos to nothing, bleary eyed mini-rant at 1:30 in the morning. You actually took him on. Good job.

  14. The new Dem candidate from the sticks is Curtis Imrie, from Granite, which is either Chaffee or Lake county, both of which are, conveniently, located in the 5th district.
