Walking around today I spotted something that caught my attention. On 16th St. in between Blake and Market there were two white Denver Police Department vans full of police officers. I wouldn’t have given them a second thought, but there were bumper stickers slapped on the back of both vans. Both stickers said: “Obama For Rockstar, McCain For President”. This begs the question: is the DPD allowing political messages to be presented on official department vehicles? If not, who put those stickers on the vans, and why do they think that it’s ok?
Lieutenant Saunier called me back from the DPD. This was the official department response to my inquiry.
“Our official policy is not to have any political bumper stickers attatched to any department vehicles.”
“I am making an attempt to reach out to the commanders to make an effort to find these vehicles, and when they do, they will remove the material from the vehicles.”
He also made the understandable suggestion that people other than police attatched the stickers without the officers’ knowledge. I don’t think so though, there were several officers hanging around, and they obviously saw. I sincerely hope that this is an isolated incident.

If I had been there it would have been only the second time I’ve seen any McCain bumper sticker. The first was two weeks ago during the World Science Fiction Convention, I spotted a truck with Texas plates sporting a more subdued McCain sticker. I’ve seen hundreds of Obama stickers this season.
redstateblues’ car had 283 parking tickets on it at the end of the day today.
don’t the Denver Police give you a complimentary “Obama for Rock Star, McCain for President” bumper sticker? 😉
Also had every wheel booted.
…I’ve often wondered if there is an actual statute making it illegal to remove a boot. I would assume so.
My “de-booting” policy is to feed the meter and in the relatively rare (post Webb) ticket, pay it. I’d rather lose the battle and win the war.
….those McCain backers have no respect for the law, ya know.
on a cop car parked on ‘Shakedown Street’ back in my Deadhead days…
am I proud of it? I can’t say, but it made for a great photo!
Shouldn’t be hard to do….all that time on their hands.
I can’t be 100% sure, but when I was walking home after I was finished at the Tent, I saw a couple vans with bumper sticker-shaped glue prints on their rear windows. Coincidence?
Seriously though, I wanted to take a picture to confirm they were the same, but they took off.
ever done for our police, firefighters and other first responders? Not to mention for anyone in their income bracket. Sad.
Government employees should not be wearing partisan buttons or posting stickers during duty time or on government equipment. That is a violation of the Hatch Act, federal law.
There’s probably some state equivalent. Policy if not law.
The Hatch act covers state and even local employees if there’s federal funding in their programs (think Homeland Security grants, for example).
Details here.
…but I think it’s more likely that the cops involved (if they themselves placed the sticker) would be disciplined under the city policy or the state statute that says “The system shall assure that employees are protected against coercion for partisan political purposes and are prohibited from using their official authority for the purpose of interfering with or affecting the results of an election or a nomination for office.”
Because proving that the officers salaries are federally-funded (as opposed to their radio equipment or whatever) is an exercise in accounting that I doubt Republican US Attorney Troy Eid is going to undertake for a bumper sticker. Especially when the blue shield descends and the DPD provides documents proving that every officer on the force is federally funded other than the ones in question, or some other such nonsense.
But that’s not what you said above and not the same as the absolute I was responding to.
You said “only applies to Federal employees.”
I agree that there are better ways to deal with the situation.
Notwithstanding that if Monica Goodling and Lurita Doan weren’t prosecuted under the Hatch Act, no one will ever be.
But don’t police cars usually have “GVT” plates? I am no license plate expert, so maybe I am way off base. Perhaps these are leased from some private company just for the convention? Regardless, I think DPD should have gone to great measures to appear impartial.
I was wondering that myself. I’m sorry I didn’t get a shot with the two dozen or so police officers who were there, but I swear I’m not making this up.
I think that your guess about them being rented or leased especially for the DNC is probably spot-on.
bet you wouldn’t complain if they were obama stickers !
But that is a hypothetical situation. The fact was that they were pro-McCain stickers.
where can i get one of those stickers !

Dem/Liberal’s opinion = truth to power
Republican’s opinions = Talking points
How’s that?
that’s about right.

Observe that ColoradoPols is one of the sites McCain is paying people for posting on.
I get like a Johnnie Mac bobblehead if I say I think McCain/Feingold isn’t a giant piece of shit?
Wow.
Bashing Obama for silly reasons also works.
And you can get a beach towel. ($35 value!) Or an embroidered polo shirt. ($50 value!)
Elitism (From Websters):
1. The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.
You made my day. Thanks for being such a caricature.
Seems to fit the definition to the tee. Fuck the poor !
Sorry, LB…truce over.
Try this, if you care to -just once.
Try to explain yourself rather than just be insulting.
In what way was what I said inaccurate? Specifically and contextually.
The truth is, you’re not interested in specifics.
You think that if you’re horrible enough, that you’ll probably chase away anyone from this blog that has a different point of view, and you’re probably mostly right, but please don’t expect me to swallow that you’re so pious and righteous that it’s offensive to you to be disagreed with.
You’re so intolerant of people that aren’t like you that you can’t even be a grownup in a setting like this.
Oh well, insult away. I’m going to ignore you unless you want to talk specific policy.
Good luck.
By most definitions of “poor”, they don’t pay taxes.
What are you specifically referring to?
it is pretty embarassing for a group of cops that is out in such overwhelming force to get tagged with bumper sticker graffiti.
There have been suggestions that undercover cops were out provoking protestors, and the plates suggest that these particular cop cars may be undercover vehicles. Perhaps the bumper stickers were designed to fit this undercover provocateur role.
Maybe it’s not a grand conspiracy and the DPD just doesn’t own a bunch of 15 passenger vans to carry 1000 extra cops around for a week.
from the Denver Post
Methinks the officer is going to have some job issues soon…
Denver cops (most) are much smarter than this.
Let’s see what shakes out.
I will definitely try my best to get to the bottom of this. If these vans were not an isolated incident, then this could warrant further investigation.
Authoritarianism = Republicans
For at least the last hundred years, this IS the psychological makeup of the party. Sometimes it is subtle; it explains why good Christians (submission to heavenly authority) are Repbulcans (submission to political authority.)
I also want to apologize to Haners, one of my daughters, and the good ‘Pubs trying their best to keep the party balanced. It’s hard to not paint with a broad brush.
