On a brighter note, here is the latest from Larry Sabado's Crystal Ball…which is a guesstimate, not a poll. He shows Colorado "leaning blue or democratic" in both the Senate and Governor's races.
although he also call Minnesota as only leaning "Blue" and I thought Franken had a comfortable lead.
Tides that turn, I am content that the pundit class gives scant atten to our fly over state, a nice surprise election day that yes, Colo is turning blue. I am looking forward to a new congressman to replace Coffman in the District where I live. Remember Scott Walker? Vaunted power house of the over confidant righties? Marquette Univ polls puts the WI Guv race a dead heat, with the (D) challenger, Mary Burke (being outspent 2.5 to 1), and having a 1% lead amongst likely voters

It really is pretty bad. Doesn't say much for the standards of the War College, either. To have been this blatant, there had to be no real effort by the school to stop this sort of behavior. I hope they put some real safeguards in place and review the works of other folks who've gotten degrees in the last several years.
The War College has been one of those unassailable bulwarks of our nation's pride. Something this large just slipping through is not good.

Calabacitas con Elote (Zucchini with Corn)

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups fresh corn kernels
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
1 pound zucchini, sliced
3 roma (plum) tomatoes, chopped
1 fresh poblano chile pepper – seeded, deveined, and chopped
salt and black pepper to taste
1/4 cup crumbled cotija cheese
Directions
1. Place the corn in a saucepan with enough water to cover; bring to a boil. Place a cover on the saucepan, reduce heat to medium, and cook until tender, about 10 minutes. Drain.
2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat; cook and stir the onion and garlic in the hot oil until fragrant, about 5 minutes. Mix the zucchini and tomato into the onion and garlic; cook together 5 minutes. Stir the corn kernels into the mixture; add the poblano pepper. Season with salt and pepper; stir. Cover the skillet with a lid and cook until the zucchini is tender, about 10 minutes. Sprinkle with the cotija cheese to serve.
Makes six servings as a side dish.

ATTORNEY GENERAL SUTHERS REACTS TO DECISION IN FRACKING CASE
DENVER— The Boulder District Court today ruled that the City of Longmont may not ban hydraulic fracturing and the storage and disposal of hydraulic fracturing waste. In ruling in favor of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, Judge Mallard found that the ban is invalid and stayed his ruling until further order from a higher court.
In reaction to today’s ruling, Colorado Attorney General John Suthers issued the following statement:
“The law regarding preemption of local oil and gas regulation by the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Act is clear and the court got it right. Under the current law, local governments can’t ban fracking.”

As much as it pains me, AC is right. As a society, if we're going to have private extraction of resources, we need to properly balance that with the needs of our fellow surface dwellers. As the law stands, the ban is illegal– because citiies, even home rule ones, are still creatures of the state and subject to its laws. Even were the ban legal, meaning able to be put in place, the law would almost certainly see such an action as a taking– requiring compensation in some amount to the mineral rights holders.
We can change that law, but it's only ever going to limit where fracking can happen unless federal rules are changed to bar fracking (wither completely or in populated spaces) based on evidence of its negative effects on folks. Thus ever federalism and capitalism.
I would question any company's right to poison a community's land and water with chemicals that they refuse to identify. Seems a bit out of balance to me.
Unfortunately, the law isn't about what's right, it's about what is prohibited. For better or worse, our legal structure isn't currently setup to stop what you're concerned about. I would argue that it's tilted toward encouraging it.
Changing state laws will help some, but fracking still won't be bannable, or, rather it will be bannable, but not without paying the value of the resources that can't then be extracted.
How did Alaska get to socialize so much gain from extraction ?
If we had a "permanent fund" in Colorado, it might make extraction more popular.
I suppose paying everyone off a little bit would make it easier for some to ignore the dangers. If they're far enough away, that is.

I had the opportunity, a few years ago, to suggest to the CFO of Encana that a small percentage of profits be set aside to compensate surface owners and neighbors…for that same reason. I suggested that by doing so, they would have a group of willing supporters, instead of an army of determined opponents.
He responded that, of all the suggestions we had made over many days of negotiation, that one was least likely to be considered by the O&G bigwigs. They would rather steamroll you than pay you…that has not changed.
