Denver Dems Boxing Match

  • by: Colorado Pols

For further proof that local party politics is often sillier than it is productive, here’s a fun tidbit:

The ongoing feud within the ranks of the Denver Democrats has risen to new levels in the last week or so. Denver Democratic Party Chair Sharron Klein and Treasure Barbara Groves battled it out in a meeting a week or so ago when Groves accused Klein of keeping two sets of books for the bingo operations that the party runs weekly.

Klein, in turn, accuses Groves of being a puppet for her archenemy, Denver Auditor Dennis Gallagher. Efforts to have Klein and Groves agree to mediation failed, and tensions were high at the Denver Democrats’ annual dinner last Saturday with further accusations being thrown about.

  1. Hmmm, missed the tension at the dinner. I found more tension in HD1 where no less than 4 Dems are running for the seat now held by term-limited Fran Coleman:
    Margaret Atencio
    Ben Coleman (Fran’s husband)
    Jeanne Labuda
    Alfredo Hernandez

  2. No tension.
Every African-American Legislator stayed away out of solidarity with Groves.
Borodkin stormed around calling the accusations against her friend Klein a crock.
Numerous groups that normally buy tables stayed away due to the internal wrangling
Not a bit of tension in the air

  3. Legislator means State Senator or State Representative. Elbra also made it clear that the only reason she was there was to follow tradition and give the award that she won the year before.
More importantly is there any truth to what Groves is saying?

  4. hmmmm….I saw Elbra Wedgworth, Michael Hancock (who was MC for the event), and Penfield Tate that I recall. I did not see her, but I was told that Barbara Groves was there herself. And if there were empty tables, I am sure where they were, the ballroom we were in was quite full.

  5. No African-American State Senator or Representative attended. Elbra, can technically be called a Legislator. Interestingly, she expressed support for Groves and clearly said she was only there to follow tradition and give the award she was honored with the year before.
Tension or no tension what validity if any is there to these charges?

  6. It is my understanding that there is truth to the dual books situation.  Not only that, but Klein and former treasurers have refused to have an outside audit of the party’s books for over 10 years.  Something that is required by party rules.

Moreover, I don’t know about Grove’s relationship with Gallagher, but I do know she is a Mares person, which would seem to indicate that she is not in the ‘Gallagher camp.’

  7. Of course it was Landri….typing too fast on a lunch break!

The former Treasurer, current Election Commissioner Susan Rogers confirmed a audit had not been done is quite some time but not because of a refusal to have one done, but because of not being able to find anyone to do for a small enough (read: affordable) fee.

Furthermore, the rules to not require a full audit, only an “examination”. This is something that can and should be done regularly and be done for free or cheap.

From what I have seen of the financial records of the county party, there doesn’t seem to be anything amiss. However, the current computer system they are using does it make the reports a little cumbersome and not well notated. I have been told settings on the system could be changed to fix some of that. Personally, I am confident all the money is where it should be.

The whole brouhaha appears to be a personality clash more than anything of substance. For all of the accusations being made, so far neither one has provided any evidence to back it up so I am happy to leave it between the two ladies involved and ask the rest of the Denver Dems to focus on what’s really important: getting Dems elected.

  8. Hmm, if you literally aren’t a member of any organized political party, it kind of takes the humor out of the Will Rogers line.  It makes it sort of a … dare I say … tautology.

  9. Gee, if Terrance Carroll was there I guess Landri just forgot to introduce him.
What about the matter being referred to State Party Chair Pat Waak for resolution?

  10. Don’t be so snarky while you sit in LaLaLaLand, there.  Terrance was there, ‘cuz I talked to him.  As you may recall, Landri wasn’t exactly on top of announcing everybody who was there, since he had to come back to the mic several times and add names to the list.

I haven’t a clue what’s going on with the Denver Dems dispute; I just wanted to be sure that the facts were presented as to who was and wasn’t there.

  11. The issue sent to the state party is one very specific instance where there was a question about how much authority a County Chair to rearrange the duties of the other officers. The point in question is worded rather vaguely in party rules.

At some point in this dispute, Sharron Klein turned to the assistance treasurer and asked to her take over the duties of treasurer. Her stated reason to date has been she felt the treasurer was ignoring her duties. This is where the “she-said, she-said” gets in the way and makes it very hard to tell what really happened.

My understanding is the state party appoints a committee (none of whom will be from Denver) to investigate the facts and make a recommendation on how to proceed based on their findings.

The bottom line at the moment is that Barbara is still the Treasurer, but the Asst. Treas (whose name escapes me at the moment) is doing the job at the Chair’s request. One thing that is very clear form the rules is that the Chair cannot remove a person from office. Only a vote of the county central committee (about 1000 people) can do that. However, the Chair does seem to have some discretion is re-arranging duties as he or she sees fit. The question before the state party is how much?

And if I said any of that wrong we will be hearing from our parliamentarian, Frank Sullivan very shortly 🙂

  12. DYSFUNCTIONAL, the only word to adequately describe the entire Democratic party. No message, no unity, no leadership. And, the truth be known, except for a few totally inept people who claim to know what to do, no one really cares.

  13. Do not worry about paying for an audit.
Secretary of State Gigi Dennis and her investigators will gladly do an audit at no charge. Keep your fingers crossed if you are on the Central Committee.

  14. Nothing better to do

OK. Bush’s approval ratings are in the tank. His top political advisor and his VP are in hot water, and his nomination for the Supreme Court just bowed out. A top Republican leader was just booked at a Texas jail,…
