House Panel Recommends Censure for Bruce

UPDATE: More coverage from the Rocky Mountain News.

Not a lot of information on this yet, but according to the Gazette…

http://www.gazette.com/article…

Bruce, the story that keeps on giving….

A panel of legislators recommended today that state Rep. Douglas Bruce be censured and that he apologize for kicking a newspaper photographer.

The Colorado Legislature launched an investigation Tuesday into whether Bruce should be disciplined for kicking a newspaper photographer.

House Speaker Andrew Romanoff formed a special committee with powers similar to an ethics committee, which could recommend discipline ranging from a reprimand to expulsion, against Rep. Douglas Bruce.

Bruce, a Colorado Springs Republican, accused the photographer of causing a disruption by snapping his photo during the traditional session-opening prayer on Monday morning, hours before Bruce was sworn in as a midterm replacement.

Bruce refused to apologize and called the kick “just a nudge.”

    1. that I’m sure Romanoff will consider.

I was thinking perhaps sitting in the corner with a dunce hat on, since that’s about the same level of respect he’s shown this state.

Haners, do you want to put a Poll up on what punishment Bruce will receive?

  1. How can the House censure someone who is not a member of the House?

    It can’t.

How can the House censure someone for actions taken before the person was a member of the House?

Douglas Bruce was an El Paso County Commissioner when the incident occurred, right.

    Just Curious.

    1.    What’s he going to do, sue Romanoff, May, and the rest the House members?  He’d be laughed out of court on a separation of powers basis.

He’s lucky they don’t expel him.  I’ll bet they have the votes, unless some of the Dems voted against expulsion just to keep him in the House for fun and games.

    2. Good question.  I was looking at the link that “Go Blue” provided and it was mentioned that he wasn’t a member of the house.  But Bruce didn’t even really mention that question.

With as much fight as Bruce has, there must have been some reason that he isn’t fighting it.

That’s the best I can do my friend.

      1. any of the armchair critics here. In fact he has written more of the Colorado Constitution than any person in the house.

If Doug Bruce says they can, They Can !

    3. They can censure anyone they want.  Think about it on a federal level.  Congress can censure the president if the see the need.  It may not mean anything, but they can do it if they feel like wasting the time.  Same with the way Russ Feingold and Pat Leahy wanted Rush Limbaugh censured after his “phony soldiers” comment.  It doesn’t really mean anything, but you don’t have to be a member of the legislative body to be reprimanded by it.

    4. A censure is just that, a collective statement that Doug Bruce is a jerk.

His vicious actions occurred on the floor of the House.  The censure will not remove him from the seat to which he was appointed … well before the battery in question.

For you to argue that the House can’t centure him is simply foolish.

  2. 1) Name gets spilled all over the press

    2) Stir up the anti-media folks on rage radio

    3) Stir up the radicals against the dem controlled legislature

    4) Stir up the religious right against the “godless” media who won’t even let a poor soul pray in peace..

Wadham’s gang is back in town!

    1. Are you saying that his secret plan is to convince us that the Republican party is a bunch of violent psychopaths, and hope people cheer them on out of a sick attraction to gore?  Maybe next week he’ll get some actual blood, and then the strategy goes full steam ahead.

    2. Interesting you point out that there is an “anti-media” group on “rage radio,” very much like there are anti-government types in government. It’s the Cons strategy of divide and conquer, from government, business to media.

However, I must give credit where credit is due, since I completely agree with what one Republican said of Bruce’s action, “hubris is a dangerous master in this House.”

The same is true for the media with the likes of megalomaniac’s like Peter Boyels, Dan Caplis, Gunny Bob, and Jon Caldara dominating the airways in Colorado smearing not only political figures but also the newspapers and tv outlets, as well documented by Colorado Media Matters.

Jason Salzman had an excellent article on the unbalanced media ratio on the radio here in Colorado.

    3. 1.  Not all press is good–ask Britney Spears

      2.  Like they need to be stirred up

      3.  Please stir up the radical GOP:  let the D’s have the suburbs

      4.  You mean like televangilists at the megachurches?  Yeah those darn cameras.

      1. a Dem on Repub thing.  The Repubs in the House are more ticked off at Bruce than anyone.  So it’s going to be hard to spin this as Dems being ridiculous and hateful.

Kind of like the Republican presidential nominee race.  It’s fun watching the rightie spin machine get itself all tied up in knots trying to figure out which way to jump now that it’s  not as simple as Giuliani good, Hillary bad or Dems against Repubs in the state house.

        1. you misunderestimate the ability of the GOP to spin this. Didn’t you just read, here, in the last few days, criticisms of Bruce that called his behavior and excuses “Clintonian”?

  3. The groups I mentioned are part of the republican base….keeping them stirred up and engaged is good strategy.  of course, there are other subgroups..moderate,,,who are apalled.  But this publicity is good for Bruce and his followers….that is my point…

Ya, I read Jason’s little piece…HELLO….he is discovering the wheel….the situation he describes has been true in Denver for 12 years or more….

Boy, but now that Jason has pointed out the bias…I can just hear Clear Channel…jumping up and runnng out to create political balance among all its Denver stations…

Watching CNN…at the LV caucuses at Cesar’s Palace…..someone got to the mike and asked for a Spanish translator….that will lead on FOX and Boyles……if you are registered to vote..you should be able to speak English….so who is voting in the democratic caucuses?  I could write the script…how do you get a job doing the “fair and balanced?”
