Huckabee and McCain - When it comes to free speech, they're both against it.

Well, no wonder the Huckabee people like McCain so much. When it comes to free speech, they’re both against it.

“I personally wish that all of this was outlawed. I think that every candidates should speak for themselves, and that every thing that involves the candidate’s name or another candidate’s name should be authorized and approved by that candidate, otherwise it shouldn’t be spoken…”.

“The point is that candidates can’t force these special interest 527 groups to stop. I wish we could”.

The “this” that Huckabee wishes was outlawed is push polling, but he takes the riff much farther than that with the “every thing that involves a candidate’s name…should be approved by the candidate” line.

The “push polling” calls were being made by Colorado-based Common Sense Issues in support of the Huckabee campaign.

It doesn’t take a Constitutional scholar to see that that would mean the end of the First Amendment, at least in a political context. But since we’re on the McCain-Feingold free speech slip n slide, we might as well just get a good run and dive in head first. At least that’s what Huck seems to think.

But don’t worry. By tomorrow he’ll have signed a pledge promising to protect the First Amendment as his bff. Because he’s tough. And smart. And not winging his entire frakkin campaign at all.-Hot Air Blog-

There’s Something About McCain – An uncanny ability to drive virtually all conservatives nuts.

  1. I wish candidates had control of THEIR campaigns. 527s have done a lot of stupid things and dirtied a lot of campaigns, frustrating the American public in the process.

I take this comment to mean that they wish there was greater control in the candidate’s hands and less in the hands of people who aren’t actually running for office. I think the use of their name is a little far, but I don’t think this little snippet is solid proof.I think it lends to Huck’s credibility that Common-sense was doing it “for him”. He doesn’t want the campaign muddied with that crap and I can’t blame him.

But then again, if I were a Lamborn supporter I would support 527s to my death as well because you can always say “I had no involvement with a group that made false allegations against my opponent”.

  2. Both have similar views not shared by the main stream of Republican voters. That is why they both attract more democrats and independents than say Fred Thompson who is a core conservative.

Huckabee has publicly stated he would be in favor of a FEDERAL smoking ban.

McCain ignored the many conservative voices that warned him of the first amendment infringement that McCain/Fiengold represented.

This “the ends justify the means” approach to major national issues is one big reasons neither will be our party’s nominee.

  3. I can see calling the NYT’s anti-American when they come out with a story about how soldiers are coming back from Iraq and are violent killers.  Except when you check the numbers, they are 5 times less likely than the national; average to be involved in a violent crime.

It’s typical left wing anti-military baby killer propaganda.

    Now that IS ANTI-AMERICAN.

But the Weekly Standard.  Main Stream Republican Opinion outside NYC or the left coast.
