Holy Crap! He WAS Somebody's Legislator

  • by: Colorado Pols

Regular readers of Colorado Pols know that we occasionally highlight the odd elected official in a segment we call “At Least They’re Not Your Legislator.”

But in this case, the misdeeds of former Republican Rep. Mark Deli Siljander aren’t humorous at all. As CNN reports:

A former congressman has been charged in connection with his work for an Islamic charity ?accused of funneling money to an Afghan warlord, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

The money laundering, conspiracy and obstruction of justice charges against former Michigan Rep. Mark Deli Siljander are part of a 42-count indictment released by the U.S. attorney’s office in Kansas City, Missouri.

Siljander “vehemently denies the allegations in the indictment and will enter a not guilty plea,” said his attorney, James Hobbs.

Prosecutors allege Siljander’s co-defendants — the directors of an Islamic charity — hired him to get the organization off a list of agencies suspected of links to terrorism and paid him with stolen U.S. government funds.

The Treasury Department designated the Islamic American Relief Agency as a suspected fundraiser for terrorists in 2004, The Associated Press reported.

Siljander is also accused of lying to federal agents and prosecutors about his work for the group, which allegedly steered $260,000 to Gulbuddin Hekmatyar — an ally of the Taliban and al Qaeda.

The United States named Hekmatyar a “specially designated global terrorist” in 2003.

And Republicans didn’t think they could have a congressman involved in a scandal that was worse than Mark Foley.

  1. Not Siljander himself, I never heard of him before. But the fact that an Islamic charity funnelling money to Islamic terrorists bought a former state legislator as cover – it almost had to be happening somewhere.

Glad to see they busted them. There’s probably 1 or 2 more and I hope they catch them too.

        1. The problem is that politicians cover it up. For example, Sibel Edmunds knows a great deal about top politicians and graft. Sadly, she was gaged by W. as being a threat to the nation, though it is exact opposite; her being gaged is the threat. I had hoped that when the dems came to power that they would keep their word and chase down these perps, which would mean ungagging her. But they have not. Supposedly it will take down a few top dems (most notably Harry Reid), but it will take down a SLEW of top republicans. Supposedly, W, cheney, Rove, Delay, Hastert, etc will be just a few in the net.

          1. I’d like to hear some more about someone who supposedly can take down Harry Reid, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Tom Delay, and Dennis Hastert.

            1. Her site is http://www.justacitizen.org/.

There are various articles about her. In particular, there is one from about 3 months ago, where another person pieces together what bit of data she has been able to share. SHe then simply said that it was closer. There is a great deal more to go.

She was featured once on 60 minutes and then the white house got a court order stopping them from broadcasting that again, and slapped the gag order on her. She recently offered herself up. In particular, she said that if ONE of the major US broadcasters would interview her LINE, she would spill all. NOT ONE of them has come forward. BTW, that is brave of her, because no doubt as soon as she spilled the truth, she would be disappeared. Hopefully not forever. But this says a lot about the condition of the media. They are not liberal, but owned by conservative owners.

            1. I understand your feelings.

You should get it from the library.

If I knew you IRL I would lend it to you.

Its a great read.  Funny in a sick way.  Informative in a ahh that’s how they do it kind of way.

If everyone knew about the dirty tricks in this book, his tell all may help Democracy more than his dirty tricks hurt it.

              1. and plays too much to its intended audience.

I hate writing that marks out the characters in celluloid black or white hats.  It comes down to pandering.

Raymond was a liberal who married a “Marxist” but decided to make his money as a big-time Republican operative.  Now that’s a flaw I’d like to see explored.  Instead, we get this “poor little me” line.

Politics is a rough business.  Maybe it should be, or maybe it should be nicer.  But Raymond has just found another way to make some money.  Besides, remember what Conrad said about the “stench of the repentant sinner.”

                1. I was laughing my ass off through the first half of the book.

He is actually quite representative of the country club wing of the party and their socially liberal/fiscally conservative views.

Actually I think his wife is apolitical, but used to call herself a socialist because she hated the people involved in the GOP and she wanted to irritate them.

Politics is a rough business? 1. it is more than a business.  2. if by rough you mean criminal, as practiced by the GOP, I agree.

He is a self important egomaniac, but that is irrelevant to wether or not the book is good.

                  1. Raymond is from a family of wealthy, liberal Democrats — as is his wife.  I don’t know if they belong to a country club (or was that just another meaningless clichГ©).

For operatives both Left and Right, Democrat and Republican, it is a business.  It is how they pay for their lives.  If you cast an even casual glance, you will find criminals on all sides.

My advice to you is to invest in Anthony Powell’s 12-volume Dance to the Music of Time.  It is a very funny commentary on people, politics and class.

In comparison, Raymond’s book is the rawest self-serving propaganda.  A penny-dreadful.

    1. Very much a holier-than-thou kind of guy.

I remember reading once that he sent out a letter about his opponent that talked about “breaking the back of Satan” or something close to that.

If memory serves, I can see how he could break bread with some of the more extreme elements in Islam.

  2. Al Qaida Wing of the GOP

Siljander was elected to Congress initially with the support of fundamentalist Christian groups, and said at the time he won because “God wanted me in.” In 1983, he claimed that “Arab terrorists” planned to kill him during a pro-Jewish rally; the FBI and Secret Service said they knew of no such plot. Siljander attended the rally wearing a bulletproof vest.

After leaving the government, he founded the Washington-area consulting group Global Strategies Inc. and, according to the indictment, was hired by IARA in March 2004 to lobby the Senate Finance Committee to remove the charity from the panel’s list of suspected terror fundraisers.

Sounds like God’s work to me

  3. These are, in fact, actions of your legislators …

Certainly, it’s criminal to funnel money to terrorists, but why isn’t this a problem (akin to Siljander’s crime) to anybody (except me, apparently)?

According to the Washington Post, since 2001, the United States has provided Pervez Musharraf’s regime in Pakistan with about $10 billion.  As late as November 2007, we were sending him $200 million in CASH.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/

These are the same guys who set up and supported the Taliban in Afghanistan (and probably still do), can’t control the radical madrasses in their own country, and can’t find Osama Bin Laden who’s hiding in their tribal areas for going on 7 years.  There are people who claim that factions in Musharraf’s government had Butto killed.  More than once Pakistan has brought the world to the brink of a nuclear exchange with India.

But, our legislators — Ds and Rs — have concluded for many years that it’s OK to send these folks boatloads of our tax money, including $200 million annually in cash.  But yet, we’re outraged and start hyperventilating when $260,000 gets funneled to an Afghan warlord through an alleged Islamic charity.

    1. The money all ends up in the same hands, whether or not it goes through an Islamic charity or a sovereign state that condemns terrorism and covertly supports it at the same time.

I think that this is no different than many NGO and government aid programs in Africa.  It ends up in the hands of the thugs, warlords and dictators, and actually helps in the suppression of the people it was designed to help.

All wasted money down the toilet.
