Should Perlmutter Primary Bennet?

  • by: Golden Boy

(There’s almost no chance of this happening, but it’s an interesting discussion. – promoted by Jeffco Pols)

In August of 2010 the Democratic Party will host its Primary election.  At that time, Senate-Designate Michael Bennet will campaign to remain Senator Michael Bennet.  Bennet seems like a nice enough guy, but there is a real question of whether or not he can defeat a strong Republican challenger in November, 2010.

Democrats can ill afford to lose the U.S. Senate seat to Republicans.  Should we encourage Congressman Perlmutter to challenge Bennet in a primary?  I don’t think Perlmutter would be the type of person to make a move like this on his own, but in the best interest of the state, should he run a strong primary campaign against Bennet?

Poll after the jump.

Should Congressman Perlmutter run a primary challenge against Senate Designate Bennet?

  1. What is this fascination among Democrats to speculate about “primarying” incumbents?

In the unlikely event Bennet turns out to be a disaster, he’ll get the word to step aside. Short of that, why would Perlmutter give up his growing influence in Congress and solid popularity in his district?

Sorry, JeffcoPols, this isn’t an interesting discussion, it’s a juvenile fantasy.

    1. The GOP is having a nervous breakdown, and we’re in the position to start getting real reforms. How about we leave the reheated Romerism back in the late-80s where it belongs?

  2. novel concept to have a longtime Coloradan represent Colorado in the US Senate.  Do we really need another carpetbagger in politics.  Perlmutter would be great.

    1. si uno nacio en Colorado, o solamente ha eligido vivir en Colorado. What matters is that we carve a pragmatically progressive path for ourselves into the future. If Bennett performs well enough to probably win re-election, then it would be strategic folly for the Democratic Party for Perlmutter to challenge him in the primary.

  3. The problem we’ve had with our junior Democratic senators is that they promise change, ask party activists to ring doorbells for them, frighten themselves into some kind of mindless zombie centrism, and then demean the very people who got them elected. The boy senator is currently having trouble figuring out what he thinks of EFCA. The State platform should give him some guidance:

C875 We endorse restoring majority rule for union certification, the right to strike without fear of retribution and prohibiting the hiring of permanent replacements in strikes or giving preferential status to workers who cross picket lines. (Broomfield, Jefferson)

See also: http://www.aflcio.org/joinauni… Simple fact, kids: you win when your elected officials do what you want them to do on the key issues; you’re doubly disenfranchised when they sell you out and have a D after their names. So, hell yes, Ed should primary the little wimp.

  4. Voted against mortgage bankruptcy reform to help the middle class

Joins a group of 15 conservadems to represent business over the peoples interest as their stated purpose.

Voted agaist Cap and Trade to be in the budget reconcilation where it could’ve had some teeth

In silence he votes agaisnt unions and labor rights

Refuses to support single payer option in Health Care

Won’t take positions on Gay Rights, Prosecution of Bush crimes, Drug reform, anti trust enforcement…

He just won’t say where he stands on many progressive issues that should be a no brainer.

He has not earned my vote and he won’t get it. I’m done with voting for democrts that sell us out.

    Ben Nighthorse Cambell

    Ken Salazar

    Michael Bennett

NO MORE BUSH WANNABEs for me

We need a progressive primary challenger or the Green Party is at least willing to tell me where they stand.
