More Presidential Polling Info

The Washington Post blog “The Fix” discusses a comprehensive Gallup poll rating the Presidential candidates on various issues. There’s a lot of interesting information here, but this section really stood out:

Let’s look at Democrats on Iraq — far and away the most important voting issue in next year’s primaries. Although Clinton has been pilloried for her vote in favor of the 2002 use of force resolution and refusal to apologize for that vote, it doesn’t appear to be affecting her among Democrats. Seventy-nine percent of Democrats in the Gallup sample expressed either a “great deal” or “fair amount” of confidence in Clinton’s ability to do the right thing on the issue. That total is virtually identical to the 78 percent who have expressed confidence in Obama and slightly higher than the 73 percent who say the same of Edwards.

Clinton also scores well on the confidence meter among independents when it comes to Iraq, with 55 percent saying they put a great deal/fair amount of trust in her judgment on the issue — the highest of any candidate, Democrat or Republican. Clinton is also the most trusted candidate among independents on the economy (60 percent great deal/fair amount) and health care (66 percent great deal/fair amount).

On terrorism, Giuliani is most trusted by independents, with 63 percent expressing a great deal or fair amount of confidence in him. McCain is right on Hizzoner’s heels, however, with 62 percent, while Clinton is within shouting distance at 56 percent.

  1. strongest asset being the perception that he is the hero of 9/11 and therefore the guy to trust on anti-terror, Dems should have little trouble pulling a classic Rove and attacking him on his perceived strength.  The parade of ads featuring firefighters and first responders who know first hand how little he did for them, how he put recovering assets ahead of recovering remains, how negligent his preparation for a second attack on the towers was years after the first attack, how his leadership amounted to little more than a few inspiring photo-op moments….  once that image is undermined, what’s he got?

    1. to do that first.  Couple those along with attack ads from anti-abortion groups and right wing Christian organizations on issues related to gay rights and his serial marriages and Guiliani won’t make it past Iowa.

      1. Becuase I so rarely see the Dems do it effectively, even when (as here) they’ve got the truth to work with instead of having to make up a bunch of Rovian BS.

          1. If I recall that team was more defensive, focusing on instant responses to attacks (if only Kerry had such an operation), but still the Clinton operation could probably pull it off.  Obama’s making me nervous with all of his talk of playing nice and just hammering on the most obvious perceived weakness (Iraq vote, Iraq vote, going insane).

  2. The Majority of Americans supported going into Iraq from the begining so why would they blame her for doing what they wanted her to do.  Maybe if Obama had a district larger then just a sliver of liberal chicago he would have known that.

      1. when he claims to have had so much foresight to be against the war.  Yeah he was against it then, but thats just because he district was only a fraction of liberal chicago.  He had to come out against the war not because he knew what would happen but because he was representing his district at the time which was very skewed view of the world.

      2. the 2004 Primary for the Senate nomination (discounting his 2000 primary loss to Congressman Bobby Rush).

In ’04 he defeated Alan Keyes in the General election.

He simply isn’t tested enough to be our standard bearer.

        1.   Mr. “Family Values” Keyes denounced and disowned his lesbian daughter after she came out of the closet. (Note to Keyes, you can learn something about families by hanging out with Dick and Lynne Cheney!)
Then his main campaign issue against Obama was which of the two candidates was the more black man in the race.  Talk about running a strange campaign….

    1. It’s clear you are a BIG Hillary fan and I’m just curious.  Which of her stands on important issues inspires such devotion.  Could you list your favorites?  I really want to know.

You don’t find her accepting a fundraiser from Rupert Murdoch in 2006 a tad off-putting?  Especially considering that his FOX network led the charge against Bill Clinton and helped push the whole Monica thing all the way to the most ridiculous impeachment in history, not to mention subjecting her personally to very public humiliation, her daughter to public embarrassment and no doubt creating a level of distraction for the embattled Clinton administration that was very useful to Al Qaida as it worked toward 9/11?  Also considering how instrumental Murdoch and FOX were in the swiftboating of Kerry in the 2004 election?  Unless she wanted Kerry brought down so she could have her chance in 2008.  What kind of Democrat gets in bed, so to speak, with someone as sleazy and wacko-right as Murdoch?

So what is it about this person that I’m missing that makes you such a fan?

      1. all the others will just shoot themselves in the foot.  Case in point Obama’s stupid remarks today about how he would invade Pakastan.

        1. she stands for that you actually support?  Interesting how you manage to work up such passion for her in that case.  On another subject, you do realize that Senator is a statewide office so Obama needed more than a piece of Chicago to get elected?

            1. On the false dichotomy of Hillary and Obama. And why cnat you answer f. sage’s question? Is there really nothing you like about Hillary, except for your belief that she is the only one that can win? How about policy positions?

              1. neither of you really care why I like Hillary you just want to try and tear apart whatever reason I give.  Thanks but no thanks.  I’m with the 43% that favor her to Obama’s 22% so ask another one of the 43%.

                1. I, too, have been waiting for an explanation. I, too, really want to understand what positions Hillary has taken…politcal.

You know, all he did was ask.

Guess we’ll have to wait to find out.

                2. If I really wanted to tear you apart I would go post by post pointing out all of the glaring misspellings you pack in to each post. But that is not my style.

I want to know why you support Hillary, and your lack or response means one of two things. One, you dont know why you support Hillary, but you support her anyway. Or, two, you are afraid of having your reasons torn apart by me or others because they are completely ephemeral and have no real longevity.

Keep on beating your anti-Obama drum, as if it means something, becuase honestly, the more you post non-reasons as to why you support Hillary, the more I become solidified in my opinion that your posts arent worth reading.

        1. Granted, not a rank amateur, but not Richardson or Gore, or for that matter, Romney.

She’s a very capable woman, so it’s not like we are talking Fred Thompson here.  Just that her experience levels only look good compared to most of the pack.

She’ll be a fine president, although I’d prefer someone like Edwards who has a vision, and a damned good one.  No doubt HRC learned a LOT just by being around Bill for eight years.  Sort of political osmosis.

As I sit typing, I can tell you I haven’t a clue what her policies are beyond winning, winning, and winning. She’s WAY too in bed with K Street, Citibank, and Murdoch for me. The new emporer will be just like the last two emperors.

  3. Are y’all nuts?  It’s now many months before the first primaries and then to the election?  And you compare every poll as if Truth.  Ask that guy on your T-shirt, Paul, what’s his name…oh yeah, Howard Dean, how fast things can change.

It seems to this cat that experience in this bunch is as rare as skunks in our yard this year.  Romney and McCain have some for the R’s. What’s Rudy w/o 9/11?  Mayor Who?  And why did that make him a presendential candidate?  Better to have been governor of Texas for six years.  Fred Not-Even-Announced is doing better than Tommy T. and some others.

For experience, the best “Democatic” candidate is not even showing interest, Al Gore.  Then Gov. Richardson.  Obama, Clinton, Edwards…..no much.  Probably at least as much as a lot of presidents had, but far less than Gore or Richardson.

Yawn…..time to lay a few more hairballs on the bed to get you pissed off. America, you will get what you get tricked into, once again.  Sure glad I’m a cat….hey, get me some more food, will ya?

        1. That’s the smartest cat I’ve ever heard of…yeah, the polls these days are crap.  At this point in 03/04, Joey Lieberman was the “frontrunner” in the polls.  Kerry never led until he won IA.

    1. Watch where you sleep…

Is the poll truth?  Not for anything outside our little group.  Are they fun?  Hell yeah.  Just like polster of the week (month, whatever).  It doesn’t mean anything but its fun

  4. its no surprise that clinton is leading by 20 some odd points nationallt

but the thing is, more than half the states in the country havent seen Obama yet, he’s only been in Iowa, N.H., S.C. Minnisota, Illinois, Nevada, Texas, and Georgia

and according to the latest polls, Obama is up by 4 in S.C and is tied with Clinton in N.H each with 31
