Okay, so you probably won’t really get to run the country like Dick Cheney gets to do, but being Vice President isn’t a bad gig if you can land it. On Sunday, The Washington Post took a look at possible contenders:
Among Democrats, Gov. Ted Strickland of Ohio is starting to generate some buzz. Hardly a surprise, since Ohio will be a hugely important swing state in 2008. But check out these other vital statistics about Strickland. He’s the son of a steelworker. He’s a former Methodist minister. He has cut taxes. As a House member, he earned an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association. But he supports abortion rights and universal health care…
…Here are some other names that have surfaced as possible vice presidential picks, in no particular order.
Republicans: Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (Tex.); Gov. Sarah Palin (Alaska); Gov. Bob Riley (Ala.); Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice; former Florida governor Jeb Bush.
Democrats: Former governor Mark R. Warner (Va.); Sen. James Webb (Va.); Sen. Evan Bayh (Ind.).
Not on this list: Sen. Ken Salazar.

Picking a Veep can wait for now. More importantly, which child of the Presidential candidates will have the greatest role in their respected campaigns?
http://video.on.nyti…
Salazar is not on the list cause no one in DC or else where thinks he would be a serious candidate for the veep spot.
His ethnic heritage obviously helps. Colorado clearly does not have the electoral votes that Ohio has, but Salazar may also tip Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada into the Dem column. (He could also campaign in Florida, make some loud noises en Espanol against Castro, and possibly make inroads into the Cuban-American community for the Dems.)
In addition to geographic balance, he also brings ideological balance to the ticket which presumably will be headed up by H.R.C. For all the reasons the left wingers in here curse Salazar (i.e., he’s a DINO, which isn’t exactly true…..he’s a 50% Democrat), he would help attract (or at least not repel) unaffiliated voters from the Democratic ticket.
& Salazar just doesn’t have any pizzazz. I mean who do you know in CO let along any place else that is actually fired up about what a great Sen. Salazar is.
I think Salazar has done a very good job. He is one of the few senators on either side of the aisle who has shown an ability to work across party lines (typically a strength in a Vice President).
I think he’d be a stronger AG….
For Dems, Strickland sounds great, especially to attract indie and moderate voters. Love Webb. Richardson not mentioned but would be terrific. Nothing wrong with Warner or Bayh either. Why do I find our VP possibilities more exciting than our front-runners?
As for Rs, they all sound pretty lame. Hutchison and Condi joined at hip with tanking Bush and I doubt religious right or south will be happy with a woman, much less a black one, no matter what they may say to pollsters. As for Jeb, is the country really in the mood for a continuation of the Bush dynasty?
Indeed, I seriously doubt that we will elect (or that the Supreme Court will appoint) another Bush as president in next hundred years. Even Jeb’s politically-savvy son, Ricky Martin Look Alike Bush (age 28), is going to have to shelve his presidential aspirations.
that if Hillary is the nominee, either Strickland or Richardson is the obvious choice.
Kay Bailey Hutchison is the choice for nearly any of the Republican candidates–particularly if Hillary is the nominee.
If Obama is the nominee, then he’s going to need to balance with experience…possibly former Senator Bob Graham of Florida? He would also be a strength (and consistency) as one of the only Senators to vote against the Iraq operation…
I think Bob Graham is in his early 70’s which is a little old, but his no vote on the Iraq authorization, great resume, and long political career in a swing state would make him an excellent choice. However, I think he is enjoying his academic career.
He supposedly has written down every minute detail of everything he has done each and every day for the last 50 years (most of it is reportedly extremely trivial and bland).
But can you imagine the press conference he will be subjected to while the media goes through these notebooks looking for some shred of an indiscretion in his life?
pairing two single term Senators with no other high level government positions would do much for the experience issue. Both need VP with great resumes, particularly in foreign affairs. Military expertise would be especially good on a Dem ticket.
And while we’re talking experience, don’t get why Hillary is considered so experienced. Her White House experience was as first lady, she’s only early second term in the Senate (a tad longer than Edward’s single term experience) and never held any cabinet or other high post. Does she get to use Bill’s resume by marriage the way she claimed to be co-President ( I missed that in the constitution) by marriage?
Do you really think what people really want is another DC politician? DC experience is overrated when it comes to running for President. Bush picked Cheney in part for his DC experience, and look where that has gotten us.
in his administration
Sadly, he does not get the recognition that he deserves. He was the one who put the kabosh on the high interest rate that he inherited from the pubs, by bring in volker (yet, the pubs claim that volker was a pub nominee).
He was the one who deregged the oil/gas (again the idiot takes credit).
He was the president who started the stealth program (but the pubs want to credit reagan).
He was the president who pushed the alternative fuel (but nixon started it on the first time, just not with much funding; carter funded it heavily).
He was the president who finalized the deregs of the airlines (but ford started the process, but did not finish it).
His biggest mistake was not pushing volker in first (I forget the idiot that he had in there), with a close 2’nd being too nice in his handling of the iran hostage situation. When he sent in the marines, he should have stepped aside and let them do their job esp since he had been a sub driver, not a marine. In my opinion (not that it matters), his biggest mistake was his trying to limit the nukes esp on breeders. He was making choices based on his knowledge from the 50’s. Big mistake.
I find it funny that the pubs want to say that giving up panama canal was a mistake, but I think that it was one of the wisest choices that I have seen.
If Carter had done what Cheney, Lieberman and the other neo cons want to do now, we could have invaded Iran 30 years sooner! And Carter would have been re-elected!
I don’t particularly like the destination that Bush/Cheney have taken us, but they have been VERY successful in getting us where they wanted to.
Cheney is an a$$hole, liar and a crook. But he has been a very successful VP.
If anythink, he is one of the better arguments for experience.
get close enough to steal the 2000 election. He countered Bush’s cluelessness and lack of gravitas. He slaughtered Lieberman (why on earth did Gore pick Lieberman instead of Florida’s Graham?) in the VP debate. We’re talking not about what various VPs would do in office but what they would bring to a ticket to GET into office. People want fresh, but in a dangerous world they also want solid. I think a double pretty young thing ticket would be a mistake.
As long as I can tell Senators to go fuck themselves I am interested in the job.
Maybe an outside chance of Clinton/Richardson. The power of no white males on the ticket at all is gigantic. And among likely Democratic voters a giant plus. The closet racists all vote Republican anyways.
On the Republican side this will force them to select a woman or minority for the VP slot. And I think Condi Rice told them no way based on how all buz for her was shut down.
Clinton is a total DC insider, but Obama’s whole message is about changing Washington. They’d be a total clash. Clinton would be better off with someone from a swing state. There is little for Hillary to gain by picking Obama, but a lot to lose.
not that that would prevent them from running on the same ticket
wound up on the same ticket after Bush ran in the primaries on making fun of Reagan’s “voodoo economics”. There certainly wasn’t any love lost there, especially between Nancy and Barbara. Still the idea of Obama as VP to Hillary must make Obama supporters want to throw up. Also far right southerners who might stay home if the Rs run a social moderate or Mormon could be energized to come out and vote to save America from a woman/black guy ticket. Dems can a run a woman or a minority but I wouldn’t recommend both at once.
He continued running against Reagan but toned down the much of the rhetoric in the hope that Bonzo would select him as V.P. He also started to tactically reposition himself (a la Mitt Romney) on a couple of minor issues (i.e., govt. deficit spending and reproductive choice).
His scheme ultimately worked but not before Reagan flirted with Gerald Ford as a running mate.
You’re absolutely right about Nancy and Babbs….they despised one another!
…but in Kitty Kelly’s The Family, the decision to bring Bush 1 on board as VP was horrifying to Nancy Reagan. She despised Barbara and George both. George spent his whole life wheedling and begging for recognition and power, and this was his ultimate accomplishment.
but they seemed to play off each other well and get things done for different reasons and for different constituencies. I’m wondering if what you should look for in a VP is a skill set that compliments the President rather than a personality test.
As for President Gilligan and the Captain – I think we see why that was a bad idea.
Just thought I’d throw that out there…..
…….that, and she’s make a fine VP
