GOP '08 Convention Confirmed in Broomfield

  • by: Colorado Pols

As the Boulder Daily Camera reported Saturday:

“We fully intend to have our 2008 state Republican convention at the Broomfield Event Center,” said party Chairman Dick Wadhams. “It’s just a matter of locking in the right date with them.”

The news comes three weeks after Broomfield Democrats learned they lost a bid to host their state convention to Colorado Springs.

The GOP rally, expected to draw about 3,000 delegates to the city, will take place over a weekend in May or early June, Wadhams said. While here, the party expects to nominate former U.S. Rep. Bob Schaffer for outgoing Sen. Wayne Allard’s seat and choose delegates to attend the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn., in September 2008.

Broomfield restaurants, shopping, hotels, a nearby airport and the Broomfield Event Center — which can accommodate speakers, individual forums and meetings, and the technology needed to keep politicians connected — were among the considerations that made Broomfield a good choice for the event, but there were some political perks as well, Wadhams said.

“It’s also in the shadow of Boulder liberal Mark Udall’s hometown,” he said of Schaffer’s potential opponent in the Senate race. “That adds some interesting political angles, as well.”

  1. Minneapolis-Denver-NYC were the only final contenders for both parties.

CS and Broomfield ditto for the state.

Are they reading each other’s mail?

    1. The fact is, there aren’t a lot of cities nationally that can host a national party convention; Denver just barely qualifies…  Similarly, there are only a few cities in the state that can hold a convention.  In any given year, not all of them are interested, and the parties may have some preferences, too.

Broomfield and the Springs were the only two proposals for the Dems, and there were also few proposals submitted nationally.  There’s bound to be some overlap.

  2. He’s like a broken record.

Broomfield was simply the cheapest venue.  It always is.  Dick W. can’t say that, though.  He needs some new lines.  He’s still hiding in the shadow of Mark Udall.

      1. but that he has only one dig: “Boulder liberal Mark Udall.”

I expect only playground insults from Mr. Wadhams, but my fifth-grader is more creative than that.

        1. my guess is that your fifth grader is more creative than none other than Ann Coulter, who got quoted this week by time magazine for saying she’s “more of a man than any liberal”.  If you’re out of ammo, ideas, a compass, a clue, etc. just hurl some insults…
