I call BS on the Iraq Occupation

  • by: Go Blue

It’s becoming clearer that certain Republicans, primarily those running for re-election or for a higher office, are beginning a new PR tactic with regards to the occupation in Iraq. Some would call it a flip-flop. Others may call it political cowardess. I’m not concerned with that, but rather I want to know is when you think our very own conservative Senatorial candidate Bob Schaffer will begin the anti-Iraq song and dance.

When this war ends the Republicans will want to take the Nixonian retreat with “honor” PR path, while claiming the Democrats lost the war. The Republicans don’t want to give the Democrats credit for the anti-war movement either. Senator Richard Lugar’s (R-IN) recent comments made that blatantly obvious. http://www.sfgate.co…

While BS likes cute slogans such as “You’d have to hand it to the Democrats . . . and Republicans did,” I would like to know when you think BS’s messaging on Iraq will change, if it ever will.

Do you think he’ll stick to his ultra-conservative guns and Never Surrender!  Or, if you think BS will be hit by a bolt of lighting in his faultering campaign and change rhetoric, at what point will that happen?

When will BS begin the Iraq Song & Dance?

  1. I’ve never understood the “flip-flop” bit.  I want my reps to change their positions where the facts warrant.  While I, as a Republican, have been vocal in my opposition to this war since before the first shot was fired, Hillary Clinton has done an about-face — and so has William F. Buckley.

Schaffer is right when he said that the ‘Pubs gave the 2006 election to the Dems on a silver platter.  How many scandals can one party survive?

As for Schaffer’s position on the war, I can only hope that he changes it.  I will do everything I can to try to persuade him to do so, should the occasion arise.  But let us not diss him for ‘coming correct,’ unless you take Hillary to the woodshed for the same offense.

    1. Way to redirect the thread and blame the Clintons! It’s the only one-liner left the R’s seem to use anymore.

Schaffer was a cheerleader for the war in Iraq. In the 90’s he openly opposed Clinton’s military actions in Bosnia, out of pure political spite. He even called for a troop withdrawl timeline.

But once Bush invaded Iraq, Schaffer has been just another lemming following the administration over the edge. If he changes position and rhetoric during his campaign, it’s only for political gain, not because he genuinely believes the war was wrong.

      1. The fact is that Hillary supported the war.  You can blame it on the strength of her Jewish constituency or attribute it to her innate stupidity or personal cowardice, but I won’t let you apply your partisan double-standard without objecting.

I have never been a cheerleader for the illegal invasion of Iraq, and I take fellow ‘Pubs to task for it.  But as long as you are going to give Shrillary a pass, you have to extend the courtesy to Schaffer.

  2. They American public supported the war in terror and the Iraq invasion and they now those wusses don’t.  Why don’t we get to the real culprit here joe public and route them good!

    1. The war on terror and the Iraq occupation are two separate missions. That’s one major problem with public perception, especially when 40% still believe it was the Iraqi’s who attacked us on 9/11.

While the majority of the public has changed their views on the war and are learning more and more about the lead-up, invasion and occupation, they didn’t have a vote on it, or have privelage to see pre-war intelligence. The public has hindsight. Schaffer was given pre-war intelligence to make the right decision and he didn’t. Instead he cheerleader for the invasion like the good christian he is.

Udall voted against the war. I have been against the war and occupation before the invasion. While those of us on the left who have been correct in what would happen if we invaded and occupied Iraq, those on the extreme right want to continue their endless occupation, even with the public strongly against it.

I blame the administration for misleading the american public, and I blame those who cheerleader for it, like Schaffer.

  3. I believe that we will continue to have troops in Iraq for several decades, much like South Korea.

If we pull out and leave the region entirely, it’s not unreasonable to expect a bloodbath between the Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds akin to the Pol Pot cleansing that took place after the withdrawal from Vietnam.  It’s unreasonable to believe that if we pull out the Sunnis and Shittes will suddenly say “Oh, what were we thinking.” and stop their Biblical fist fight.

Note that Saudi Arabia and Iran are also different sects — one Sunni and one Shitte.  It’s not unreasonable to expect that a sectarian civil war in Iraq would involve those countries eventually.

Iraq provides us with roughly 500,000 barrels of oil a day, Saudi Arabia with 1.5 million barrel a day.  If that stops, $3/gallon gas will look like a bargain.

I believe that we will be there for a long damn time.
