Just gets goofier as it goes.
Hmmmm, announcing his candidacy exactly two weeks after he announced it in Teller County.
I guess his lawyers told him he better announce, or else face an FEC complaint.
Off to a great start!
Doesn’t really matter if he announces now or a year from now, with Shari Williams and the Beauprez crew at the helm the outcome is a forgone conclusion.
He’ll probably make his announcement right next to a Wiccan shop just to show how liberal Udall supposedly is. What it will really show is that by doing so, Schaffer is showing how much of a right-wing bigot he is.
Wouldn’t he want to formally announce at a place that represents his base, his values, his campaign? Boulder dosen’t quite strike me as that place.

But, I believe the Boulder Repubs Lincoln Day Dinner is tomorrow. I assume there aren’t a whole lot of big repub events in the near future…
Udall will run as the conservative pro-business candidate and Schaffer will run as the liberal pro-environment candidate.
They know they have their base – both will push as far to the center as is believable, and then a bit more, trying to grab the center.
So it makes good political sense for Schaffer to officially announce in Boulder and for Udall to do so in the Springs.
If Udall’s not gonna do it–not prudent or whatever–than, damn it, Schaffer’s gonna! I heard that Udall was going to have a big campaign kickoff away from Boulder so that, you know, he can kind of shed that nasty Boulder liberal image. He wants to hold it a long, long way from Boulder.
He’s going to Niwot, baby!
Schaffer’s probably going to make another announcement of his intent to announce officially in the near future.
Hey, he’s rusty! Nearly a decade of keeping his word (memo to Three-Term Tom Tancredo!) means he’s a little off his game.
When I met Pete Coors shortly after he announced his candidacy for the Senate, I asked him a tough question, and he looked at me like Dan Quayle caught in the headlights. In his speech to us delegates, he said that he pretty much agreed with all that BS stood for … which prompted me to ask, “Why in the he11 are you running?” As George Patton once said, “if everyone in the room is in agreement, no one is thinking.”
While I disagree with him on a lot of issues, I respect Bob as a person because he actually kept his word in the big things (not running for re-election like Tom), which is as rare among our politicians as a diamond in a dung-hill. Given the distressing alternative — craven and hypocritical politicians like John Suthers — I welcome ‘character’ guys like Schaffer. (And okay, when it comes to politicians’ character, remember that in the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. :))
I remember for the first month or so of Pete Coors’ campaign, his most usual response to a question was, “I don’t know.”
While I certainly prefer politicians who do know something about topics, I did find his candor refreshing.
Even though I would never vote for Schaffer, at least he appears to be a man of his word, and consistent.

What’s the difference between Schaffer telling folks at an LDD he intends to run for Senate and Udall telling folks ever since he did the deal with Salazar in ’04 that they need look no farther than our favorite Boulder Liberal for a senatorial Candidate in ’08?
Without a Primary challenger, Bob has plenty of time to announce his intentions for his Senate run.
he has too because he let it slip a couple of weeks ago that he was running. Some people said there’s FEC rules that kick in when you do that. I don’t know, though…
If he waits much longer, it looks like “well no one else is running, so I guess I’ll be senator.” By announcing early, candidates appear to be the inevitable choice. One reason Udall has no primary is because he was hinting at this a year ago and announced early. Everyone thought Udall would be the inevitable choice and accepted it as such.
He was gracious then and gets to run now….Democrats surprise me when they actually have it together…
