Salazar (Mostly) Downplays VP Discussion

  • by: Colorado Pols

As the Denver Post’s Christa Marshall reports on their blog:

Sen. Ken Salazar remained coy Wednesday about whether he’s being considered as a vice presidential candidate, saying he’s focused on his work in the U.S. Senate.

In a conference call with reporters, the Colorado Democrat said “you don’t get approached” about a spot on the ticket and you “don’t run for the office.”

“The people of Colorado gave me a license to dance on their behalf for six years, and I intend to do that,” said Salazar, whose current Senate term ends in 2010.

Earlier this week Rep. Mark Udall told the The Daily Sentinel of Grand Junction, Colo., that a Westerner such as Salazar or New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson would strengthen the Democratic ticket. Salazar also has been touted as a potential vice presidential pick on various political blogs.

In January, he said “never say never” when asked by the Denver Post whether he would reject an offer to be on the ticket…

  1. because NO ONE outside of CO is thinking about making Salazar VP.  Udall was just stroking an old buddy being a glad handler and back slapper and yall are just taking him way to serious.  I mean really what say does Udall have in who the next VP will be NONE!

    1. Whether his choice of V.P. candidate would get a sufficient number of other delegates to make it to a roll call vote is a different question.

      1. You know better then that.  You know its the winning nominee who will pick their VP and right now all the campaigns have a lot more on their minds then who their pick for VP will be.

  2. I live and work in DC, and not for a Colorado member… The talk about Ken Salazar and VP is rampant.  People understand, you can no longer win without the west.

    1. Can you tell us who is talking about this, or what level these people are ?  Is this at the hill ?  Just curious – anything else you might know I am sure would be interesting to all on this blog.

    2. Nobody who is going to be making this decison is even thinking about this right now.  If people are talking about it they must have to much free time on their hands which tells me they aren’t a decison maker in this area.  No one credable is thinking or talking salazar.

      1. Richardson doesn;t have the steam building up to make a successful bid for Pres but any of the 3 front runners would be greatly helped by having Richardson on thier ticket.

Not only does he bring geographic advantages, he also would greatly suppliment any of them in the area of foreign policy.

  3. Webb has turned out to be a maverick.  He’s a new senator, former Secretary of the Navy and is talked about as a VP for Obama.

This is talk among members of congress and hill staffers.  If it’s Clinton then Ken Salazar, if Obama then Webb.

  4. I say let’s let Kiss Ass Ken fail upward. In the Senate he’d be casting rare tie-breaking votes, and Ritter could appoint a real Dem to replace quisling Ken. A good way to neuter another blue dog.
