Oh, Sweet Political Irony

The Rocky Mountain News called the race for secretary of state on Wednesday, but it looks like they may have jumped the gun. As the Associated Press reports:

Denver officials continued counting tens of thousands of absentee ballots through the night and don’t expect to finish until later in the day on Friday.

One statewide race still hangs in the balance. Republican Mike Coffman leads Democrat Ken Gordon by about 32,000 votes, but Gordon still has a chance in heavily-Democratic Denver.

The only undecided race, which is undecided because of voting problems, is for Secretary of State. You couldn’t write a better script.

  1. As a Denver friend mentioned last night, with the change to voting centers the old meeting your neighbors at the polling place is history. Oregonians haven’t switch back, what do they know?

Let’s cut the crap, save a slew of money, send Diebold and S&S packing home, and have a paper trail. Any self respecting mechanic and electronics geek could built the scanners. Simple, simple stuff and no proprietary code.

Oh, and results about 7:05 or 7:10 PM.  Run the ballots as they come in.

    1. As further evidence of the Election Commission incompetence, on Friday before the election, there were some 45,000 absentee ballots that hadn’t even been opened and put into the system as having voted.

It left GOTV efforts for both parties hanging, because they had no way of knowing who had voted, and who they needed to get to the polls.

    2. But I like voting on election day. I like getting the sticker. I like the booth. I have never had to deal with a line, but I would like to think that that would not be unpleasurable. There are a lot of reasons to go with mail in ballots, but I  for one like this system, because it brings a smile to my face.

      1. You still get a sticker if you vote early, you don’t have to stand in line, and the election judges LOVE to get snacks!  I agree, election day is like Christmas and I love to go to the polls, so I take some snacks over and put those smiles on the faces of the (overworked, unappreciated) election judges.

        1. Last time I voted in CO was in ’04. At that time, I went to Grandview High School (precinct, not student), walked in around 4.30, and there was not a soul. Bear in mind that my voting experiences at the polls do not include this cycle. I am a big geek. I like election day, I can understand people who want to do it early, but for me it is the pinnacle of cool, for lack of a better term.

      2. I liked nothing better than walking to the polls early on election day, and greeting my neighbors. It was fun.

It was also easier on the poll book judges, because they usually knew just about everyone coming through the door, and had them located in the book before they were done signing the card. There was little need of ID, because virtually everyone knew everyone.

      3. …a sticker came included with the mail in ballot! I realize, though, that probably doesn’t change anybody’s mind — pro or con — about mail in ballots.

      4. That I remember being in elementary school and they let us try out one of those old mechanical monsters, telling us that this was almost sacred, and that “someday”……

(BTW, those machines were virtually unhackable, they could only be altered one machine at a time.  They also could have been modified to punch a card, thoroughly, cleanly, no chads. Easy to optically scan, paper trail included.  Probably not enough profit in those machined parts vs. software.)

I think that was formative in my passion for civic involvement. That my mother has spent years making sure her daughter and granddaughters knew about the sacrifices of the suffragettes, and her love of FDR cinched the deal.

The voting age was 21 when I came of age.  I cast my first presidental vote for Hubert Humphrey ( I still cringe at that name!)

    3. Every voter has their own preferences and I think it is important that they have the option to vote by which ever method they prefer: Mail-in, Early or Election day.

Personally, I prefer Early Voting, but this year my plans for around election time were really cloudy a month out, so I voted by mail to be safe.

  2. Whoever wins this race will do by less then 5,000 votes.  If the AP is right and there are 66,000 votes left uncounted in Denver which is breaking for Gordon at 70% then Coffman will win by 5,000 votes which will trigger a recount.  If there are as many as 80,000 votes then Gordon will win by 1,000 also triggering a recount.
