Latest Iran Debacle Spin: Affordable Gas Is Bad, Actually

  •
  • by: Colorado Pols

NBC News reports while every Republican who has spent the last year celebrating the declining price of gasoline either cringes or plugs their ears:

Anyone listening to President Donald Trump’s speeches has heard him say it and say it again: Gas prices are dropping on his watch, making life more affordable.

The day before he launched the war against Iran, he appeared in Corpus Christi, Texas, and said that “right here,” gas prices had fallen below $2.30 a gallon.

“I just left Iowa two weeks ago: $1.99. And then I passed another one: $1.85. It’s happening. It’s happening,” he added.

On Thursday, Trump’s message shifted…

“Shift” doesn’t do this night-and-day somersault that only Donald Trump would even attempt justice:

Back in April of 2024, Trump made headlines for his brazen promises that donations to his campaign from the fossil fuel industry would reap handsome returns via the policies he would enact. The first year of Trump’s return to office was nothing for oil companies to write home about, with weak demand keeping prices low.

But Trump is keeping his promises now! To oil company executives, not American consumers. With oil prices near $100 a barrel and Trump “forced” to ease sanctions on Russian oil to compensate for the closure of the Strait of Hormuz that Energy Secretary Chris Wright misrepresented earlier this week, American oil producers are some of the only short-term winners.

As for who will take the blame in the fast-approaching midterm elections, that’s not Trump or his fossil fuel friends either. Voters will take their frustrations out on vulnerable Republicans like Colorado’s Rep. Gabe Evans, who sang Trump’s praises for sinking oil prices and are now left holding the bag while has prices spike due to Trump’s deeply unpopular war on Iran.

And instead of helping, Trump is rubbing salt in voters’ wounds.
