UPDATE: The Attorney General’s office is representing the Secretary of State and is arguing – right now – that the injunction should NOT be allowed.
As Colorado Confidential reports:
CNN is reporting that lawyers for the Colorado Democratic Party are enroute to file an injunction in Denver District Court to extend voting time in Denver County an additional two hours because of massive problems at vote centers.
Newsreports claim that voter rolls were not ready at 7am when the polls opened causing long lines to form. Power outages and general problems with voting machines have also been cited.
More as information as it becomes available.

“You bastards”
They just want everyone to have the opportunity to vote.
Novel idea that.
If voters have to come back after wasting their morning due to voting problems, they need to be given the time to do so. I think you only get a two-hour leave from work to vote, so a lot of these people have already used their time and still didn’t get to vote. Keeping the polls open late to compensate is the obvious answer.
And yes, Gecko, I’d offer the same courtesy for folks in El Paso County if they had the same problems.
I have no problem with extending the time.
EVERYBODY deserves a chance if they want to take it……
How else do we know what people really are thinking?
— declare Election Day a National Holiday and allow people the time to vote!!!
a bunch of drunks showing up at the polls.
I do think that businesses should be allowing ppl to vote. In addition, if it is taking a while, businesses should be a bit understanding.
It Could be like another 4th of july! A celebration of our democracy. Sign me up.
Dems can’t have it their way so they call their lawyers to manipulate the rules. Kind of reminds me of how they had their dog Martinez and the Supremes tossing out the Defend Colorado Now ballot issue.
What, exactly, are you afraid of? That if everyone who is eligible to vote gets to vote, that your beloved Party will lose?
I worked on election protection in ’04. We had people coming up to us–both Democratic and Republican Party voters–to ask questions or get help on, for example, voting provisionally. And, although I was working for the Democratic Party, I provided assistance to whichever voters asked for it. You see, the Democratic Party wants to make it easy for all REGISTERED, ELIGIBLE voters to vote, and the Republican Party wants to make a NONPARTISAN ISSUE (allowing registered voters of whatever party affiliation to vote) and make it partisan! Or, perhaps the Republican Party does NOT want it to be easy for registered voters to vote. That would be rather un-American…
The Colorado Democratic Party did NOT go to court and say “Stop the dirty Republican tricks!” Instead, they went to court to try to protect the rights of ALL registered voters. But, you had to try to make it a partisan issue. Ridiculous.
Sad that democracy is being denied, ironic that the (D) machine city, which has had ample warning, can’t seem to deliver what is really a basic government service even with no evident obstacles in funding. Down in exurbia I goose-stepped right through.
Same problems in 04 in Ohio in Dem precincts and many other places. Predicted by Greg Palast and Bradblog and others. I would like to know how the situation is in Cherry Hills or the Denver Country Club polling station. Wanna bet nada?
As part of my streetwalking, I was sent to a precinct in Jeffco to make sure they opened on time. The precinct is essentially at Hampden/285 and Garrison/Estes. Well, they opened at 7AM, all right……..without any machines working.
They had been trying to get hold of the clerk since 6:15. Two hours later one machine was working. A neighborhood I would estimate as leaning Dem.
Coincidence? If you think so, you are incorrigible.
DEMOCRACY, WE LOVED YOU FOR 230 YEARS!
why are all you (D)s conspiring to surpress the vote in Denver? I really can’t figure out what your motivation is for doing that. My daughter, who is a confirmed tree-hugger, reported seeing delays because people couldn’t seem to figure out how to work the little wheel. Maybe they should have translated the arrows into Spanish.
“They had been trying to get hold of the clerk since 6:15. Two hours later one machine was working. A neighborhood I would estimate as leaning Dem”
Are you seriously saying this is some kind of Republican conspiracy? I called Qwest last night about a DSl problem and spent 2 hours trying to explain that no my modem didn’t have a little light flashing.. I didn’t even think to ask his party affiliation.
Incompetence is bipartisan
no argument here! best laugh of the day.
with the length and complexity of the ballot i think delays are inevitable. i know there have been delays reported in EPC as well. i would say everyone is to blame for not being well-informed prior to voting. if you know how youre going to vote and have already read the amend. and ref. it goes a LOT quicker!
But what brilliant person in the state party decided that this new should be ANNOUNCED!!!! And early at that??? Seriously. We are trying to get people to the polls. Telling people how horrid it is is more likely to keep people at home. This is the type of thing that should be kept under wraps if possible if and until the injunction is granted. Who releases a press release that will keep voters at home….. sigh…
One is as you said.
The other is let people know who left that they can come back up to 9:00 pm so they don’t just give up.
And can they please get someone competent to run elections there. Up here in Boulder we threw out Linda Salas after the disaster up here.
I agree that people we should let people know they can come back up to 9pm… if that turns out to be the case. Saying it before it happens is only asking for trouble though.
As to your comment about getting someone competent to run elections… I couldn’t agree more. First thing after this election is over I’m going to look into what the hell is going on with the DEC. This must be fixed by ’08.
We need to make sure that everyone who is eligible to vote has the opportunity to vote. Since there have been problems at polling places, they should stay open an additional 5 hours not 2 hours as the court injunction being filed by attorneys for the democrat party states.
You might find it interesting that today for the first time in my life I voted for democrats. I am 43 and have been a registered republican since the age of 18. I have always either voted for republicans, independents and libertarians in local and state elections. I have always voted republican for President. I’ll probably vote for the democrat in the presidential election in 08.
Although I am a republican, I am an American first. I am a former U.S. Army sergeant (war veteran) and U.S. Navy Seabee Reserve petty officer. BrianBlackwell.com
I have been so fed up with republicans over the past 6 years I voted straight ticket democrat today. I wish the democrats the best of luck.
I’m still registered R but have only voted for a handful of Rs in the last 10 years. Most votes went to Ds but more as a vote AGAINST the Rs than a vote FOR the Ds.
And, I offer my sincere thanks to you for your service to our country.
You also put up much longer than me. I have been voting mostly Democratic since I went to the 1992 Presidential Convention as a Republican Delegate. I switched to unaffiliate last year. I mostly vote Democratic, though as a former Republican chairman in Jeffco, I know lots of Republicans who are good folks that I vote for, but not if I think they have higher office aspirations. AS far as I am concerned, the only way the Republican Party will ever be true to Barry Goldwater again is if we throw these authoritarian theocrats totally out of the party. To do that the Republicans need to lose big. I love the commercial about Republicans losing the whole Colorado government because conservatives and moderates didn’t care. My answer is, the fact is that moderates do care and we are throwing you guys out on your asses.
My husband thinks the best way to fix the Republican party is for the traditional Rs to leave the party entirely, which would fully expose the right wing. Without a handful of moderates to run interference and give the wing nuts a bit of credence, they’ll run so far to the right that the public will finally realize the extremism of their goals.
It’s my dream. Though I’m middle-aged and I don’t think I’ll see the change in my lifetime. Dammit.
