Entz Vows Not to Go Negative, Then Does

  • by: Colorado Pols

Republican Lew Entz is locked in a tough battle for SD-5 with Democrat Gail Schwartz, who had been enjoying a comfortable lead until Entz started throwing haymakers. Entz’s negative ads are reportedly helping to close the gap with Schwartz, but they aren’t gaining him many friends with the media. As the Pueblo Chieftain reports:

State Sen. Lewis Entz has gone negative in his re-election bid to the Colorado Senate despite repeated promises he wouldn’t use such tactics.

In several campaign stops and political debates with his Democratic rival, Gail Schwartz, the San Luis Valley Republican from Hooper repeatedly has denounced the numerous negative ads that have plagued both candidates in the race for months.

Entz vowed he would never go negative.

Since then, however, his campaign has sent out a mass mailing calling Schwartz an Aspen liberal who “only understands the tax-and-spend special interests of her friends in Denver and Boulder.”

Even though Entz admitted that he is responsible for the content of that flyer – it was paid for by the Committee to Elect Lewis H. Entz – he denied having seen it before it was mailed.

“That was by my committee, but I never saw it until I got it,” said Entz. “It was sent out and I didn’t have any approval of it. It shouldn’t have been sent out, but it was. I never saw it until I got it in the mail. I guess I’m responsible for it then.”

  1. I love all these politicians who say they’re “responsible,” “hold me accountable,” “the buck stops here,” but then do absolutely ZERO to TAKE responsibility: i.e., by resigning, or taking personal action (like maybe, Mr. Entz, APOLOGIZING to your opponent and the public for exposing them to such garbage?), or doing anything that might cause them to experience any personal CONSEQUENCES for the misbehavior.

Whatever happened to the good old days, like in Britain in decades past, when Cabinet members actually RESIGNED when they failed to do their jobs right?

  2. voting for the water special interests of Aurora and Colorado Springs – to the detriment of his constituents interests – is okay.

    Thanks a lot, Angie.

    1. Lew Entz said he voted the wrong way on the water bill because he “pushed the wrong button.”  If San Luis Valley folks are voting for Entz in November, they’re pushing the wrong button as well.

      1. Yeah, that and the check is in the mail and I won’t….

Lew also was the 18th vote in the Senate to put Referendum A on the ballot.

People in the valley and the western slope know how Lew has deserted them on water issues.

        I say again, thanks Angie.

  3. You don’t have to put up with all the negative crap Gail and her millionaire friends have thrown at you.  Not responding only encourages these sleezeballs.

  4. The mail piece also bashes Aspen, saying “movie stars come from there, not someone you’d want to represent you”, because they do not live paycheck to paycheck.Lew doesn’t understand his district if he insults Aspen and by association all the ski towns..It is there that income disparity exists and many live paycheck  to paycheck…
His one note campaign to call Gail a millionaire is quite desparate. Besides anyone who knows Entz knows how much land and water he owns and that he is one of the richest farmers in the valley
When the rethugs can’t run on their records they run attacks…That is why we need Gail Schwartz, she is hard working, knows the issues and is damn smart…She will represent ALL the district.

  5. Angie Paccione legally files for bankrupcy.
This issued was covered over and over by the press.
In 2002, 2004 and today the press has covered it.
Mike Kopp broke the law and got convicted for writing bad checks. Yes, it was a long time ago. About the same time as a matter of fact as the time that Paccione had her problems. Kopp says he wrote a bad check. Kopp wrote dozens of bad checks and Kopped a plea to one count.
Why the double press standard? Doesn’t the public have a right to know about this?

  6. That’s right…far right. Talk about going negative! Who IS Mike Kopp, anyway…all we know is that he is a convicted paper hanger (that’s a bad check writer in Cop Talk) who is afraid to debate a grandmother because the League of Women Voters, who hosted the debate, were TOO LIBERAL! Then  Karpetbarrger Kopp sends out a Robo call saying his grandmother opponent (who has a Ph.D., mind you) is supported by cross dressers, homosexuals and abortion on demand backers. Doesn’t he know (or care) that kids can answer phones? Send this fear-monger back to Arizona, or New Mexico, or Minnesota, or North Dakota or where ever it is he came from and tell him to take his slime ball, cowardly approach to politics with him!!!

    1. That’s right.  Paula Noonan, the woman who is spending over $200,000 of “her own money” on her Senate campaign had a lien placed on her home for failing to pay her bills.  Wonder where that 200k is really coming from?

      1. Is Cory Voorhis out there accessing NCIC for his favorite candidates again? Cory, it didn’t help Beauprez and I’m don’t think it will help Kopp. Cory, tell the truth, you’re just making this one up.

      2. Is Cory Voorhis out there accessing NCIC for his favorite candidates again? Cory, it didn’t help Beauprez and I’m don’t think it will help Kopp. Cory, tell the truth, you’re just making this one up.

  7. Gail will be my State Senator.  Bye bye, Lew “pushed the wrong button” Entz…

What the hell kind of leader/politician/candidate allows his staff to mail things out, with his name on it, but doesn’t see it until it arrives in his mailbox?  Why can’t the Pubes be adults and own up to their actions…

It’s not just Lew–there is a pattern here:

Bill “it was a $20,000 special interest ‘prize’ not an oilie bribe, and I’m gonna sue a 19-year old college student over an LTE” Behrens; Rummy “it’s not my fault–back off” Rumsfailed; Denny “it was only overly-friendly pedo-talk” Hastert; Dukestir “I’m innocent until I cry” Money-ham; Tom “I look like Jesus in my mug-shot” Diaper-laden; Bob “I will be exonerated, oh I am so sorry” Ney.  GW “The buck stops over there somewhere, no further” Bushit…  Dick “Dunk-em” De Sade; the list is endless.

The Pubes say:  “Politics are local, Bush isn’t on the ballot.  We will talk about ISSUES that matter to voters in their district.”  Well, guess what?  Kerry isn’t on the Ballot either.  Mission Accomplished, my butt.

Lew, be a man, and admit that 1) you voted to send Western Slope water to the Front Range and 2) Your campaign, under–one would hope, unless you are asleep on the job–your leadership, sent out a negative attack piece after promising you wouldn’t.  That means you are a) incompetent as a leader, b) a liar or c) both.

I vote for c) and I voted for Gail.

  8. Hey, that’s edging really close to owning up to one’s own actions.  Let’s lay off Entz–he’s making progress, for a Republican.

    Baby steps…
