You want different, I got different
But sit down in that chair, right there, and let me show you how its done.
The Devil Went Down To Jamaica:
lost his leg to diabetes. Luckily his playing hands survived. He was a 300+ pounder who, with Felix Pappalardi on the base and Corky Laing on drums, formed Mountain, the first band that made my father yell: Turn that music down!
This was the song that did it. On day 136 of broken promises from Pols on Mailbag Vol. 2, here’s get well wishes to the self-proclaimed Fattest Guitarist in the West.
(and I was a huge Leslie West fan)
But this guy from the other side of the hill is the fastest.

He died a few years ago. His name was Tom Roberts, but his stage name was Pig Champion, and his band, Poison Idea, was one of the best hardcore bands of the mid-80s to early 90s.
Rather than share a music clip (I’m pretty sure most of you, with the exception of Canines, won’t be interested), here’s a humorous video of Pig at a restaurant.
Well, the quality is crap, but I still think it’s funny.
Here’s Leslie with size to match his chops. Cool thing is that, unlike Hendrix, Cobain, etc., West beat his demons and slimmed down (and dried out) dramatically in recent years.
Unfortunately, his great skinny bassist foil, Felix Pappalardi, didn’t. The producer of Cream, the Dead Boys and Hot Tuna, Felix died of an allergic reaction in the ’80s. (His neck rejected the lead inserted there by his wife via a handgun.)
Clarence Clemons may have been the Big Man, but Leslie could have squished him like a bug:
an ALBUM*, — yep, that’s right, a whole damn ALBUM* — worth listening to. And, what’s better yet, it’s chock full of that sweet, sweet 60’s Memphis sound . . . released just this week (mid-summer’s day to be precise) . . . here’s the title cut from The Bo-Key’s latest, Got To Get Back (to my baby):
(*ALBUM — A damn fine collection of music that you used to get in a single purchase. Younger Polsters may want to check some folks with a bit more mileage, e.g., the likes of Ralphie, for more information on this concept.)
Curiously, I found this title cut to be the weakest of all of the tracks on the new album, . . . think Booker T & the MGs. You’re going to be hearing music from this all summer, so, you might as well just buy* it now. You won’t be disappointed.
(*buy — another almost-lost-and-forgotten concept associated with music that used to come in albums. Again, suggest you ask the likes of Ralphie for further details . . .)
the final Friday Jams of the reign of MADCO and Aristotle (nee RedStatesBlue).
Long live C Rork and ProgressiveCowGirl!
Signed, Deacon Blues…
You are unbearable.
Hadn’t heard that one before.
Hadn’t heard that one before.
Yesterday was Mr. Robert Hunter’s birthday. For those of you not ‘on the bus’ you will still probably recognize the song, if not his styling…
