    1. Jonathon V. Last, at the Bulwark, writes about the voting reforms/election laws.

Over the weekend, Joe Manchin basically killed HR 1. A lot of people are upset. I get this. But I want to concentrate your mind on what does, and does not, matter. And let’s start with the mission statement:

The best version of HR 1 is the version that (1) has the key protections and (2) can pass.

      That’s it. Everything else is a nice-to-have.

So let’s start with the things that do not matter and which no one should spend even five minutes thinking about:

      • Manchin’s motivations.

      • How to get rid of Manchin.

      • Why Provision X from the bill was really great and would have made life better.

Do not throw good money after bad.

      1. Nice idea, but it absolutely matters if Manchin has spit on this legislation. Without him, no voting rights legislation will pass, and he’s insisted he will not vote for any legislation unless the Republicans support it.

That’s what the Polyannas don’t get. This isn’t a question of tact. Manchin was warning us that he won’t vote for anything of ours unless McConnell supports it. Anyone who says otherwise simply doesn’t want to see it.

        1. And, since Moscow Mitch told us his top priority was stopping the Democrats, is it possible that Joe is happy being an obvious tool? It looks that way.

        2. Manchin supports the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Lisa Murkowski has advised she also supports it.

The ACLU opposes some of the campaign finance provisions in HR 1.

  1. the quote de jour “Insanity is knowing that what you’re doing is completely idiotic, but still, somehow, you just can’t stop it.”

This afternoon, I read something which made me wonder:  If a person or group of people is NOT able to know the action is idiotic … what do you call it?

According to a new Morning Consult/Politico survey, 29 percent of Republican voters said it is at least somewhat likely that Trump will be restored as president in 2021 – including 17 percent who said it is “very likely.”

    1. Unfortunately, replacing the Enbridge pipe in Wisconsin ( and the protests against it) are still ongoing. The plan is to carry Canadian tar sands oil through Wisconsin. As usual, the project is on Native American lands and threatens the health and environment of Indigenous people.
